    There have been a few pieces written on XCOM's randomness. If you are concerned, read this

    Basically, the seed for the random number generator is chosen at the beginning of the scenario, so events are deterministic in relation to that seed. If you want a different outcome, you'll have to take a different action.

    Also, just play on Ironman and it is as good as random.
