It does seem incredibly ill judged, why out of all the possible people you could choose would you go for someone who even if she's as honest as the day is long clearly has potential for a conflict of interest. To say her brother is up to his neck in it is a bit harsh, but he was probably at least a bit incompetent/allowed pressure to be exerted on him.
