Throughout the program, he did not hide the fact that he was considering such a thing, nor did he hide the fact that his wife didn't want to be on the program as she disagreed with it (but would honour whatever his decision was).|
For those who haven't seen it, he did explore alternatives. After meeting 42 year old Andrew, he met someone with the same illness who had chosen not to die, and instead had gone to live in a kind-of sheltered living carehome, where he could still live his life, albeit from a motorised wheelchair.
I genuinely don't feel that his involvement cheapened the program - it felt a hell of a lot more genuine than an episode of dispatches where a dispassionate journalist attempts to fake emotions to make it seem "grittier".
