That's video game narrative at it's finest. Take four horror movie archetypes that can fit together in virtually any combination to tell a story, and then leave players to fit them together in countless different combinations to tell countless personally created stories.
All this branching Heavy Rain narrative stuff is a bit of a blind alley, in my opinion. Trying to make games like films. The people I know who played L4D talk about L4D stories a lot more than we're ever going to talk about the story in Heavy Rain or Mass Effect.
