I'm researching an article on the economics of digital distribution, and need to do a comparison with the situation currently in place for retailers of the physical product. I was wondering if anybody in the know could provide me with some information.|
I'm particularly interested in:
How retailers purchase copies from a publisher. Is it directly, or through a third party?
Is there a wholesale price for buying in bulk, or does the publisher take a percentage of profits per unit sold?
Do retailers have to purchase a license to distribute?
What is the usual profit margin per unit sold?
For digital distribution, I'd like to know:
What sort of terms appear in a contract between digital distributors and the rights holder?
How are the profits of sale split between distributor and the rights holder?
How do the parties agree upon a set price?
Any help you can provide is much appreciated.
