You're right in that the interview could be cut, and amended to what fit the story the Times wants to tell, but since the comment “We are driving children to lose their childhood, and some video games are incredibly violent, like Grand Theft Auto. They are meant to be 18 but nobody cares what it says on the label." is in quotes you have to take it that he said it as is. He might have been goaded repeatedly by the interviewer to comment on games, but he could have just said something along the lines of "Many of our children lose their childhood by being exposed to adult content before they are ready for it. We need to enforce the ratings on this content and educate those who disregard it."
The paragraphs about drink are completely separate to the one about games, it doesn't look to me like he's implying that games make you a drunk.
