The comics do move faster than the TV series, but the comics (particularly in the early days) play host to events, rather than plots, really. The slow-burn continuity comes with the character development, and how they are affected by the world they're living in. Thats how they messed up the middle episodes of the TV series, they aimed for that approach but it just doesn't work that well on TV.

The comic is more plot orientated at the moment, as Kirkman is looking for more things to do with it and building on long running themes. I would have to say I'm more a fan of the comic (well, fanboy really) than the TV show, but they do compliment each other quite well. (Sometimes.)
