When we extradite our citizens to the US, we usually do so only with an undertaking that they will not be executed. So, that's two ways this problem could be solved easily:|
1) Sweden could state they won't extradite him.
2) The US could give the same undertaking that they won't execute him, that we normally ask for.
All this would take is a signed bit of paper from either party. Instead we've got all this nonsense with embassies and political asylum. Why not take the much, much easier and more straightforward route, unless you've already decided you might want to exercise those options?
