Linear is not a problem in my book, I'm very glad it's not a sandbox borefest. I do think level design could have been better. It should have masked its restrictiveness better, like HL and HL2 do. Still the best examples on how to do level design.
But I think for Insomniac, this game was all about the multiplayer and SP got less attention as a result. And I must admit I'm slowly converting from a SP gamer to an MP player. As long as there's no voice chat required to properly function as a team, MP can be very enjoyable. That's what makes Skirmish mode so brilliant IMO.
