Xbox Live gets new update

But no Twitter, Facebook etc. just yet.

Microsoft has released a new downloadable update for Xbox Live.

Nope, it's not the one which will deliver Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm and Zune functionality - according to Major Nelson, that's due to arrive next month.

This update just adds WPA2 support for the Xbox 360 wireless network adapter. Ah well.

Managed to get on the beta of the new features. Tried out Last.fm was pretty impressed. Not sure if you need to be both a gold subscriber and a subscriber to Last.fm as it has given me 160 minutes of trial, or if I get ads after that.

I'm sure my 360 was already using WPA2 as it's what my router's set up as...

I am on the beta too, to get LastFm you need gold membership. If you do not have LastFM membership they put adverts on before your music. Been quite impressed with the music choice.

Facebook seems to be missing many of the important features (add, remove, search for friends etc)

    @seasidebaz

I think (If you have a router like mine) it's in dual support mode i.e. it's accepting connections from WPA or WPA2 devices. I'll check if my Wii, ipod/iphone and PS3 support WPA2. If they all do, then I'll switch the router to WPA2 only mode. I suspect that I'm not going to be in luck though as Nintendo don't seem to think that progress is important and probably only support 14.4k baud or something ;)

Edit: Just played the L4D2 demo. Two levels from Parish with a few of the new infected. Didn't find anything new about it to be honest, though the PC graphics have been greatly improved. Now I really don't have any clue what the reviewers, fanboys and press have been raving about. The new melee weapons make zilch difference (in fact they are positively lethal to your life guage if you try to use them as your main weapon). The AI still cheats i.e drops zombies in right behind you from thin air! and the jocky infected just plain breaks the game (in my opinion obviously)!

Nintendo do support WPA2 on the Wii not on the DS though. Replaced my router and has everything bar the 360 working with WPA2 (greyed out). They could have updated a week ago to save me the trouble of doing it all again!

Haha yeah i had a hell of a time trying to set my 360 wireless up and realised it was WPA2 and it wasn't supported, ahh well looks like i'll be able to set it up now ... but why was this not done earlier?

this update also includes video adds i believe, i haven't noticed them before. i don't like how gold members also have to see them clutter up the interface. more of a principle than an annoyance, but still...

at least the sound is muted if you're listening to music
  • RexRunti #9 2 years ago

Video ads have been there a while. They're also muted when your not hovering over them and have never appeared as the first thing to come up in the spotlight section. So unless you activly hover over it you shouldn't get the sound anyway.

i don't get any adverts, ever. Save maybe those 'save 50% on this XBLA game' etc.

    Not sure why..
  • dr_faulk #11 2 years ago

Hang on, some of my mates have already been tweeting via Xbox live? What gives?
  • seasidebaz #12 2 years ago

I was going to comment that the subscription to Last.FM is cheap as I have subscribed for years but it seems to be £3 a month now.

What does a paid sub give you that a free one doesn't? I've not explored last.fm too much yet, but enjoying the free radio...

I think it's only certain European nations that need to pay the Last.fm service.

Us plucky Brits get the service free on the internet (and therefore I presume free on the Xbox).

Hang on, so my 360 is currently undergoing 30 minutes of updates (yes that's broadband) for a wireless adaptor that I don't have? Are they going to send me one in the post? or just wasting my damned time? Thanks for nothing Microsoft
  • captainrentboy #15 2 years ago

^ You must have a bloody awful connection then, I'm on around 7.5 meg and the update took about 30 seconds :/
  • Lawlost #16 2 years ago

Mmm not so impressed with Facebook. Not very easy to navigate.

Interrupted my gaming, took around 10-12 mins, lots of restarts. will Microsoft _never_ look at things from anyone else's point of view?!
"shall we just message them an update is available?"

Got to share this with you. MS are doing a server test this weekend for their video Zune service. You have to use your MS point to rent the movie but 'only if there is a problem' fill in the MS survey and they give you 1200 MS points. So they eventually work out that everyone will make up fictious problems to complete the survey and get the points. So in their wisdom they cancel the ability to get the points, but then still ask you to rent the film and let them know if there are any problems! Well stuff you M$ your servers will not get the testing you want from me, how about free rental and ask people to fill in the survey and get 500 points otherwise bite me.
