Xbox 360 Chatpad UK date News

Xbox 360 News by Tom Bramwell

16 July, 2007

What with all the excitement at last week's Microsoft conference (let us not forget Viva Piñata: Party Animals), you'll forgive us for not picking up on this one instantly, but the platform holder also slipped out some lower-key peripheral announcements - a release date for the Xbox 360 Chatpad and the promise of some new Xbox controller colours.

The Chatpad - better known as the horn-rimmed Xbox 360 Text Input Device - forms part of the Xbox 360 Messenger Kit, due out in the UK on 7th September, priced GBP 24.99, and in the US a day earlier at USD 29.99. It clips on to an Xbox 360 controller and allows you to take advantage of the console's new Live Messenger features for instant-messaging without having to resort to the on-screen keyboard. The Messenger Kit also includes the ubiquitous Xbox 360 Headset. For talking.

Meanwhile, wireless Xbox 360 controllers are set to be offered in pink, dark blue and light blue colour schemes starting in October, here and across the Atlantic. Each will retail for GBP 32.99 / USD 49.99, and you can get a look at one of the blue ones over at Xbox.com.

Can this thing function as a standard bluetooth keyboard, or is it some shonky 360 specific wireless format? Would like a nice compact wireless keyboard for the PS3, don't need it to clip into a controller.

I really like the Chatpad, think it looks great.

Mad Catz did something similar for the Sixaxis.... it doesn't 'quite' look as good. hehe

That light blue one is fooking minging isn't it?
I might go for a dark blue one though, it'll match my Halo faceplate. (I nabbed it from work, even I'm not silly enough to pay for a faceplate)
And that keyboard add on thing would actually be fairly useful, I use Live to msg my mates quite a lot, but that onscreen keyboard is a bastarding nightmare.

The Chatpad comes with another headset? I already have three of those. I probably should stick with the USB keyboard that I've been using for this purpose, but I'm such a sucker for official peripherals that I'll probably end up with one.

I need the damn chat pad. The amount of times I've tried to use the on-screen keyboard, put "wait a min" and gone and switched the PC on is getting silly. If pads are $50/£35, I guess that's $30/£20. Good enough for me.

You know what, that's actually quite a neat add-on... Maybe console MMO's will actually be viable on the 360 now?

Would be even better if they put a web browser onto the dashboard also.

Not huge amounts of use, but can sometimes be useful.. is on the PS3 (and almost the Wii but then you have to turn it on).

The pink one is very, very,*very* gay.

I like the keyboard. Could be cheaper, though.
