XBLA vs. PSN vs. WiiWare/Virtual Console Article

Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii Article by Dan Whitehead

7 October, 2008

Page 3 of 3. <- Page 2

Finally, Nintendo - and another area where the Wii desperately needs to smarten up its ideas. The Wii Shop Channel is an awkward and counter-intuitive tangle of slow-loading menus, lists within menus, shops within shops. The lack of demos is a recurring complaint, and one that needs to be addressed. Clearly this would be easier for WiiWare than the Virtual Console, but even there some sort of time limited trial version of a ROM could surely be arranged. The problem is compounded by the rather poor descriptions. A small video of the game in action, or just a gallery of screenshots, would go a long way to help potential customers get a feel for what they're actually buying.

Unfortunately, the Wii Shop's problems don't end there. With no background downloading and no way of queuing multiple downloads, buying more than one game is a time-consuming exercise in frustration. Not only do you have to sit there and watch Mario do his little "biddy-bee-deep" coin collecting while a file downloads, afterwards you're dumped back to the safety warning screen and forced to navigate all the way back into the store to find the next game you wanted. Maybe it just bothers me because I have to do this every week, for every new release, but it's still an ugly and archaic system.

Advantage: Xbox 360 and PS3

Quality

And here's the tricky part. Who has the best games? There's no realistic way of grading such an impossibly wide array of games, drawn from twenty-plus years and countless previous formats as well as brand new titles, but in the interests of science and hundreds of angry comments, I'm going to give it a shot.

Let's start with Nintendo, since it's taken a beating in the last few rounds. The Japanese company is at a clear advantage with the Virtual Console, since it puts a vast swathe of gaming history within its grasp. As has been mentioned several times already, Nintendo hasn't been a particularly thoughtful custodian of this legacy, with some unfortunate PAL problems and apparently little effort to sort the wheat from the chaff. Even so, any downloadable games service that can boast multiple Zeldas, Metroids and Marios is never going to struggle when it comes to quality.

'XBLA vs. PSN vs. WiiWare/Virtual Console' Screenshot metroid

Some of the greatest games of all time reside on the Virtual Console, and while the petty-minded may bleat about having to pay three quid for a Commodore game when they can download the ROM for free online, the ability to have so many classic games in one place, available for armchair play, is worth the slightly steep prices. WiiWare doesn't have that advantage, of course, and while the early releases boasted some absolute gems, there's a distinct feeling that the shovelware is starting to creep in. Here's hoping that we see more games like My Life As A King and LostWinds, and less like SPOGS Racing.

Sony, it seems, is still on the fence here. The PlayStation Store hasn't yet found its killer app; the must-have game that drives every PS3 owner to dust off their credit card. Super Stardust HD certainly comes close, but given that it's so often talked about in relation to Geometry Wars something uniquely Sony is clearly required. On the other hand, the PlayStation Store distinguishes itself by not having any truly horrible games either. The early line-up wasn't hugely impressive, but there was nothing as crass as Shrek N' Roll, or as craven as Pokémon Ranch. Things have improved considerably since, with most new titles earning solid 7s and 8s, so it seems that Sony is doing something right. I do hope it continues to exercise control over the PSone games that get added to the "Classics" folder though. The first-party additions have been hard to fault - anyone who doesn't love Crash Team Racing deserves to be drowned in wee - but recent uploads from the likes of EA and Ubisoft have certainly lowered the tone. More genuine classics like G-Police, please, and less tripe like Street Skater.

'XBLA vs. PSN vs. WiiWare/Virtual Console' Screenshot gpolice

However, for all the crap that has been pumped out under its auspices, it's arguably Xbox Live Arcade that is host to the widest selection of truly great downloadable games. Admittedly, Microsoft is on a roll at the moment following the staggering run of Geometry Wars 2, Braid, Bionic Commando Rearmed, Galaga Legions and Castle Crashers, but don't think we've forgotten the dark days when a half-hearted port of Time Pilot or Joust was all we had to look forward to. A return to that ethos would be a grim mistake but, even with that cavalier approach to quality control, when you look through the list the gems outshine the lumps of coal. Any service that can offer faithful versions of Prince of Persia, Doom and Bomberman alongside the best of the current indie games scene is in an incredibly strong position. Don't mess it up, Mr Microsoft.

Advantage: Xbox 360

Conclusion

So what have we learned? More importantly, who won? Well, I would argue that the 360 currently has the advantage in four of the areas discussed, with the PS3 edging it out in terms of the overall shopping experience, as well as having a much better quality-to-crap ratio. The Wii Shop, on the other hand, is over-priced and horrible to navigate, but does let you buy The Legend of Zelda, Super Mario Bros 3 and Metroid for just over a tenner.

One thing is for certain - there are stinking great piles of money to be made from downloadable games, and there's no way that any of the Big Three console companies are going to stop trying to find ways to make their pile the biggest.

What a pile of cr*p

Nintendo makes me pay for games I already bought in the past, and played an finished in the past.

360 has amazing stuff, but also lots of horrible stuff.
Sony has less on offer, but the quality is good. And you've got really big games on there (Warhawk, Quest for Booty, Burnout Paradise). As a gamer, you should own a 360 and a PS3, and you should pick the best of both to fill your gaming days.

This VS stuff is just fanboy ammo. Racism within the console world...

I've used all 3, and they're all good. I'd probably agree that XBLA just edges the others out - I enjoy browsing the store more, and have quite a few really good games on it. Or I should say had, since I traded it in. The good thing is when I eventually get another I can just sign-in and redownload no problems.

As I've only got a 360 at the moment, I can only comment on its Marketplace.
The imminent new facelift has come at just the right time, I was getting kind of sick of trawling through the (now rather bland looking) different menus and sub-menus, not just for the Arcade titles but for the demos, themes, whatever.
I can't argue that quality wise it's really finding its feet now, it still gets the odd mega turd, but it certainly has its fair share of classics.
And the pricing is occasionally waaaay off, charging 800pts for a game that is renowned for being shite is just wrong.

I'm well biased obviously, but having stuff like Wipeout, Siren, Burnout, GT5p and Warhawk as part of your download catalogue is a pretty massive plus. Out of all the downloadable titles you can get, this is real high quality stuff production wise.

Intriguing to hear Bomberman and Bionic Commando name dropped as keystone titles as they are cross platform? Or have I got that wrong...

Be interesting to see what the future holds because there are some great titles to come, more Pixeljunk stuff, Fat Princess, GTI Club, Savage Moon. What needs addressing is as mentioned, the bizarre PSone catalogue. Every now and again, something pretty crappy is dropped onto us. I'd rather have Xenogears than Kula World please.

I'd agree with tis - xbla just edges it - early on it was poor, but microsoft have really got their act together. Shame the pricing is a bit steep, I agree that sony have got that right - i couldn't believe it when i found the psone games on there for £3.49 each! puts most of the other console's downloadable titles to shame...
Sony have really focussed on quality, but i think that disappointing feeling every thursday is harming that a bit... there's nothing worth going into the shop for!
I don't have a wii although I already own all the classic nintendo games so sound like it would be largely redundant for me.

Its a shame, we won't ever see any classic PSone games that never made it to the UK from overseas via the store. Not unless region coding is abandoned and we can grab them for the US. 360 closely followed by PS3 at the moment. Apart from lost wind, the Wii is a bit crap at everything. Instead of Wii60 it really should have been PS360 as the console duo to own.

As I own all three I can honestly say the Wii is now a dust ball awaiting the next mario or zelda game. Whenever I go to the shops to buy a game I rarely if ever even look at the Wii version of anything.

Yeah, sorry Dan but you've lemoned yourself proper there. It's not as if WOHD was a surprise, or the fact that it was going to be essential - these hallowed pages said so themselves months ago.

Other articles get an edit for a typo. I think this one needs a serious rework. Or I can summarise:

Sony: too few games overall, though much less crap, and a solid stock of brilliance, and cheap into the bargain. Demos optional. Getting better fast, and the library of PS1 needs to be exloited NOW.
Xbox: A set of great games drowning in a sea of sh*t. Aging/solid interface about to be improved. Costly. Hamstrung by download limits and lack of standard HDD. Standard demos. On a roll, perhaps complacent.
Ninty: Trading on past glories. Shit interface. Shit value. Whoo - SD card storage sometime in De Foutyore. Must try harder.

Result: tie betweeen PSN and XBLA. PSN must contunue it's improved form. XBLA mustn't rest on it's laurels. Ninty needs a kick in the man sacks.

Well, if we're going to get bitchy about what they didn't mention, I'll toss in a few things that made my XBLA experience fantastic (besides GW2 and Braid):

Pac Man CE
N+
Mutant Storm Empire
Ikaruga
Rez HD
Zuma

I've played the headline games on a friends PS3 and there's some good ones there too, but I still think 360 has the edge. Super Stardust and Everyday Shooter are good games, but in the shooter space I still prefer GW2, Ikaruga and Rez personally. Warhawk isn't my cup of tea though, I don't play a lot of online multiplayer games (too old and not enough time to practice). Wipeout looks great though. All depends on what you like I guess, although in my experience 360 owners tend to own more XBLA games than PS3 owners own PSN games, so maybe that's an indication of the relative success so far.

Why no mention of the lack of storage space for Wii downloaded games... or the mess up that Sony had with early PSone games like Medievil and Spyro 2... causing them to withdraw them and the latter has still not reappeared, much to my disappointment.

A nice article though... to my mind the PS3 offers the best service with a nicer selection of top quality games that actually feel like "proper" games, perhaps thanks to the larger file sizes allowed, something that clearly affects the 360 and Wii more. The Wii is the most disappointing for me, mainly because I feel many of the games are overpriced but also because the lack of storage space has put me off downloading them... I really cannot be bothered with copying stuff too and fro from the Wii's internal memory to an SD card and back everytime I want to play a game.

P.S. Will someone sort out the size of the damn "Edited by" text!!! Does it really have to be in bold and twice the size of the normal text?!? Sheeeesh!

I agree with most posters here that right now, the PS3 is ahead. 360 not too far behind, but definitely behind. Wipeout HD, Burnout Paradise, Warhawk, Quest for Booty, Siren, Gran Turismo, and then there's the host of great smaller yet (often) original games (Fl0w, LocoRoco, Super Rub-a-Dub, Velocity Bowl, Parachute thingy, Tekken 5, better EyeToy games, etc. - a vast range of quality and originalstuff), these days it also gets the multi-platform stuff (yes, including Bionic Command c.s.) and add typically much better value for money and being able to view prices in real currency. In fact, most podcasts and websites recently site PSN as an absolute standout feature of the PS3, like in the 1up yours podcast even this weekend, and fairly unanimously so too even when they are generally more pro-360.

Fair enough; this article was clearly written some weeks back, but it should have been updated to consider Wipeout HD. Just a few lines, a mention of it and removing the comment that PSN is lacking that killer app would have covered it.

For those commenting, I think perhaps the likes of GT5P, Burnout Paradise and Warhawk were not considered was because they are not available solely on PSN. Whilst I don't necessarily agree, I can see why the writer may have taken this point-of-view.

Also, I find it beguiling why Sony hasn't added more of its PS1 classics to PSN - stuff like Rollcage, Colony Wars, Alundra and G-Police would go down an absolute treat. Further, there is a host of classic Psygnosis games which need bringing back (Barbarian 2, Shadow of the Beast, Discworld), which is just puzzling as to why they haven't yet. There must be very few licencing issues in the way.
