Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

30 June, 2009

Microsoft has announced that King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match will also be available on Xbox Live Arcade tomorrow for 800 Microsoft Points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60).

The other game, remember, is Worms 2: Armageddon starring Bruce Wigglis.

King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match is a fighting game. There are special moves galore, practice modes and Japanese haircuts. The Ultimate Match part of the title refers to a handful of extra characters.

There are some shots and a brief synopsis of King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match on the Xbox.com site.

Damn you Team 17, when will you learn to mine your amazing back catalogue. Bring back Superfrog or Alien Breed and leave those damn Worms alone!

They're making a new Alien Breed, apparently with the Unreal 3 Engine.

Is Alien Breed still on for a July release, Spadge?

Enjoying that crunch, no-doubt? ;)

I was always more of an 'Into The Eagles Nest' man myself - although new Alien Breed is more than welcome!

Oh, and KoF '98 is a quality title, can't wait for KoF XII either!

@svd

OMG a comment from SVD that isn't anti-MS! Or do you just do that on CVG?

Anywho,

I never really got into KOF, I just found them too technical, along with many other SNK games. That said, their sprite work was always gorgeous to look at, especially on the Guilty Gear series.

And +1 for Alien Breed! Aren't there already god knows how many versions of worms, as well as worm clones, on XBLA already?
Would love to see some new ip from T17... anyone know if they have something in the pipeline?

@darkmorgado:

Guilty Gear isn't SNK, it's Arc System Works.

Incidentally, the new trailer for BlazBlue is superb.

I hope you're joking. My head almost exploded in a nerd rage reading that. :P

Last Blade, Art of Fighting 3 and Garou: MOTW are probably their best sprite work during the Neo Geo era. Only really starting to surpass that with the new KOF.

EDIT: beaten

Hopefully the PS2 version of '98 UM will still get a PAL release for us non-360 owners.

KOF 98 is the second arcade fighter I really got into, after Street Fighter EX (don't complain, it's what was there and it is still very fun!) so I'm really looking forward to this.

That said, it's typical that it should be released when I have two Xbox 360s in for repairs!

About time! This one was originally stated for a May release.

Now I have Garou MOTW, KOF '98, SSFIIHDRMX and the upcoming KOF XII.

2D beat 'em ups FTW

Been a big fan KOF (much better then SF), really looking forward for the new hi-res 2d KoF XII soon on 360/PS3...But am disappointed with Garou: MOTW and probably KoF 98 - simply they look very dated esp on Hi-Def tv's. Why don't they update the graphics and smooth some animation, these will benefit the games enormously!...They look to jerky and dated to play on Hi-def and with those gastly side boarders.

TRUTH - surely its all about the gameplay?? Graphics aren't as importamt as playability I feel. And to be fair, it would be better if the graphics were overhauled, but I still think they look great - loads of character and a fantastic art direction - look past the resolution and you will see that the graphics are good, just let your eyes adjust ;) And after that the gameplay will come through and you'll be one happy, happy little bunny for yourself :)

The netcode should be fine since it was pretty good in Fatal Fury Special.

+1 on the boarders issue. Why aren't they optional? I'd prefer to have black boarders to be honest. And why no option to stretch to full screen?

That's my only complaint with Garou MOTW though, and it's a minor. The graphics are pixelated and are a bit of a shock at first, but most old games are like that. Nostalgia has a funny way of blurring over the edges. If you want proof go back and play the original Mario Kart on a SNES emulator. It looks shockingly awful! Just takes an hour or so to adjust. Personally I think the animation is great for a 'hand drawn' game.
