XBLA games to feature avatars soon News

Xbox 360 News by Oli Welsh

3 November, 2008

Four existing Xbox Live Arcade games and one new one are set to incorporate Avatars when the New Xbox Experience launches on November 19th.

According to Microsoft's Gamerscore blog, Uno, Bomberman Live, Hardwood Hearts and Hardwood Spades will all be updated to feature custom-animated avatars in the menus and lobbies.

There will also be an all-new Live Arcade game featuring fully playable avatars released on November 19th. Microsoft is remaining tight-lipped on the details for now, promising more information "in the coming weeks".

Outside of Live Arcade, the new Scene It quiz game - Scene It? Box Office Smash - will be the first full-price title to incorporate Avatars. It was released last week in the US, where it will be updated with Avatar support on the 19th, but we assume it will launch with the feature when it's released in the UK on 28th November.

We published tons of fresh information on the Xbox 360 interface revamp over the weekend here at Eurogamer. Be sure to read Tom's impressions of the New Xbox Experience beta and interview with Jerry Johnson for more.

Wouldn't playing Bomberman with your avatar work, though? A bit more work than just icons in menus maybe, but still.

I thought Microsoft specifically said you couldn't kill avatars in games so how the heck is the avatar being used in bomberman?

Im not whining. I just dont like the idea. Thats all. Seems like MS is desperate to reach out to the casual gamers out there. The 360 is the best console for the serious/hardcore gamers and they should stick to that market imo. Its the console for adults not 8 year old girls and 80 year old grandmas. We have the Wii to please them.

You are whining, and it's pathetic.

Explain to me how the inclusion of a little animated character in a handful of arcade games affects you? It doesnt, plain and simple.

Is your hardcore shooter #549 using Avatars? No.

Is your dusty racers #110 using Avatars? No.

Is your manly hack'n'slash warrior #320 using Avatars? No.

It's childish and pathetic to be so reactionary to something as inconsequential as an animated persona. Find something productive to do with your life.

I think the key is "... to feature custom-animated avatars in the menus and lobbies." I.e. Not in game.

I really don't understand why anyone would have a problem with this. It simply allows you to use your avatar in games, if you don't want to, or don't like them, you don't have to. The 360 is still very much a "hardcore" console, just because they're trying to expand their audience doesn't change that.
