XBLA blaster Ion Assault unveiled News

Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

6 July, 2009

Black Inc. has unveiled Xbox Live Arcade game Ion Assault, an retro-style blaster that will be released later this summer for 800 Microsoft Points (GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60).

Like Geometry Wars and Super Stardust HD, Ion Assault has you control a spaceship and blow wave upon wave of alien enemies to smithereens, using all manner of weaponry and power-ups.

Ion Assault also thinks it looks very nice in the mirror, and boasts millions of particles and "outstanding" visuals. These we have captured for our Ion Assault gallery.

Ships can be upgraded, incidentally, as you progress through a storied campaign spanning four scenarios. Apparently the aliens have stolen some particles and one looks like Robin Williams or something.

Black Inc., incidentally, is a part of German telly network RTL, and the game will be developed by German start-up studio Coreplay.

Owl, get Firefox (I hope you have it already) and get Adblock Plus for it. No more ads ever again.

I had hoped GW2 was the last of these. Pretty much every other game that arrived for the Arcade in the first year of the 360 was a GW clone.

There's only so far you can go with twinstick shooters, but i'm always up for another good arcade experience.

I thought the stage 2 boss (and entire level!) of R-Type was more memorable than the tail waving foetus of stage 1: a gigantic ship that you can blow the shit out of, piece by piece, and that constantly tries to crush you and shoot you as you hover around its massive structure.. awesome!

Sorry but I don't see the comparison with Geometry Wars and Super Stardust. Sure it is topdown and it is a twinstick shooter but both Geometry Wars and Super Stardust are very simple games with a very tight playing field.

This looks larger, with less limits and a scope that takes away from the tight focus of the game it is trying to compare itself with.

WHy the hate against twin stick shooters? We have zillions of "single stick" shooters... if the game is good, the game is good. Nuff said.
