X360 vs. PS3 Face-Off: Round 12

It's that time again. Eurogamer's ongoing coverage of the latest developments in cross-platform gaming continues apace, as five brand new releases are put to the sword. The aim here is simple: to supplement existing review coverage with additional commentary based on any technical and gameplay differences we might happen to find. An exhaustive range of HD screenshots supplement the piece, derived from HD video of each game. Where 1080p is supported (either natively or via scaling), additional galleries are included - so that'll be just one this time, in the form of LEGO Indiana Jones.

As readers of the epoch-making Grand Theft Auto IV Ultra Face-Off will know, we've recently added video to our comparison analyses; the difference being that it's video that actually works, based on an ultra-quality workflow. Each game is captured at lossless 24-bit precision from the HDMI ports of the respective consoles using the now obligatory Digital Foundry TrueHD capture kit, ensuring that literally every piece of video information sent from the source at our mercy, to do with as we will.

From there, we're free to extract shots from the streams and create videos (maintaining the lossless workflow) before exporting them to ultra-high quality h.264, nicely streamable courtesy of Eurogamer TV. The action is slowed down to 50 or 25 percent for two reasons. Firstly, slower movement allows for precision video playback. Secondly, it's the only way to make sure that the entire 60fps stream is viewable. Plus of course, actually seeing the differences is a hell of a lot easier.

One pixel in the EGTV player is equivalent to one pixel on your HDTV, and more than that, two versions of the video are available for your perusal. Videos embedded into the piece let you get to the action quickly, while clickthroughs to higher quality versions on EGTV show 40 percent more resolution.

Onto the games them, and an excellent selection this time with plenty of discussion points.

    Before the massive torrent of the usual, I'd like to say I respectfully disagree with the only one I've played on both, Overlord, and found them to be indistingushable.

    More importantly, the thumbnail on the front page is awesome, as are all funny pictures of cats.

    As someone who owns both consoles now, a very informative and useful article... Well, not really, as I had no intention of buying any of these games anyway - with the exception of overlord which I bought for 360 ages ago! All very informative nonetheless.

    As usual, the PS3 shots are washed out and not calibrated properly. EG really hates the PS3.

    I used to hate these features (when I only had the 360), but now that I have both it's useful when picking a version.

    EG - "One pixel in the EGTV player is equivalent to one pixel on your HDTV..."

    Is this still true for 720p footage displayed on 1360x768 native resolution HDTVs? I ask because 720p equates to 1280x720 so clearly there's some "stretching" being done to map the image to 1360x768 and as such this cannot be 1:1 as you infer. Right?

    I really don't understand EG's criticism of LEGO Indy being only 30 fps with V-Sync. It's not a fast paced game anyway, aside from the few short vehicle sections, so the drop to a locked 30 fps feels perfectly fine to me. It's not like the game requires you to make precise movements 60 times per second!!! V-Synced 30 fps far more preferable to the horrendous screen tearing that you see by default IMO. But since this is a matter of taste, why don't all 360 and PS3 games include a V-Sync option in the menus so that those of us who can't abide screen tearing but don't mind the odd framerate drop and/or a lower framerate can still enjoy these games without getting a headache?

    I noticed that Top Spin 3 has tearing in its cutscenes and replays. What's odd is that it isn't frequent so it's a mystery to me why the developers thought it was a good idea to disable v-sync when the framerate dropped rather than just letting the game run with the odd stutter. Sure it's not a big deal but it does distract from the polished feel of the game somewhat IMO when a closeup of a player's face suddenly "wobbles" due to tearing!

    Just because fanboys take the bait so easily, doesn't mean these articles should be stopped. Why should we dumb everything down to the lowest common denominator?

    Believe it or not, some people do own both consoles, and, especially if it's a single player game - Xbox live wins out most of the time for online multiplayer(for me) - these articles are very useful for deciding which version to get. It may only be a marginal difference between the two consoles sometimes, but some people have huge tv's too - or in my case a HD projector - and the bigger the display the less marginal that difference becomes!

    My only complaint with these articles are that they come out sooner, especially for AAA games, I like to buy them on the day they're released. Which is, obviously, easier said than done, as it takes time to do these in-depth comparisons I'm sure...

    @NatAttack - The reduced tearing in SD with PS3 GRID is because the game is pushing less pixels and effects per frame, i.e. 852x480 as opposed to 1280x720. If you play Uncharted in SD there's a lot less tearing in that game too. Basically the higher resolution you use, the more pixels the hardware is having to draw onscreen and the harder it is to get a solid framerate without some issues, e.g. tearing or slowdown.

    So basically it equates to 'get the 360 version of every game in the face-off....unless you want a minimap in Overlord' ok gotcha!

    also i have to say the tearing on the PS3 version of GRID is a fucking disgrace, and the peeps who cant see it are obviously wearing special 'sony fanboi tinted' spectacles.

    P.S. This article does again confirm that multiformat games are best played on the Xbox 360 except for rare exceptions. And even if the PS3 version is identical, you still have to consider those multi-minute, multi-GB HDD installs than in the majority of cases don't improve loading times beyond the 360's DVD drive speeds anyway, e.g. Top Spin 3 is a good example. (By the way I own both consoles)

    My guess certainly wouldn't have been anywhere close to that number either. I've clocked in perhaps 15 hours in GRID, and with the exception of two or three cases during some major high speed pileups plus occasionally during replays from certain camera angles, the only times I've noticed fairly consistent screen tearing is when the camera quickly zooms down the grid before race start.
    99.9% of the time there's none during actual gameplay. Or it's so minor that my eyes are missing it and you'll need some fancy software like EG is using, to analyze the frames and tell you there's supposed to be screen tearing here, there and almost everywhere.

    I'm playing on a HDTV by the way - 40" Samsung M87 (with the game defaulting to 720p, I haven't tried forcing 1080p upscaling).

    So to sum up. The 360 version is much better, exept when the PS3 is doing little bits much better. In short, they are exactly the same but we prefer the 360 version. So Ner :)

    Agree that those articles are mostly super-uninteresting. (Yeah, I own all current-gen consoles for the record.)
    Should limit it down to games with 1) Major differences/flaws and 2) AAA-titles like GTA4, really.

    Also, for those articles to be effective, try to have em out as close to release as possible, as people tend to buy AAA-stuff pronto etc. (Should be possible if you follow suggestion 1 and 2, right?)

    The 360 might indeed come out on top in most multiplatform titles (though I would still pick an inferior PS3 version just to avoid the hellish noise from my 360 - in fact with the PS3 game catalogue finally becoming decent, I haven't had my 360 turned on for more than around an hour total over the last two months), but that "eight minute PS3 install" that even reviewers like to throw around as supposedly a major issue, is just plain silly in my opinion.

    Alright, fair enough if we're talking about disk space (I was also pissed off at running out of space on my 40 GB disk, fortunately a 250 GB replacement only cost me around the same as a game) - but in many cases it actually sounds like it's the 4-8 minutes wait they consider a problem.
    That's really more than a little silly.

    Im still convinced the ps3 is ~20% more powerful than the 360. And I think that will show more and more the longer the ps3s lifespan gets. (Ofc, you cant take multi-platform games into consideration. They will almost always be superior(or equal) on the 360 for obvious reasons.)

    Although, its pretty much up to SquareEnix/Konami/Sony alone to prove me right on this.

    All i can say is time will tell the ps3 will be the ultimate winner no doubt and i have one ! Owned a 360 for a while and enjoyed it but theres something so sexy about the ps3 and the fact im using it as a fully fledged computer with linux its great. I give the 360 another year or so and then it will start fading out the ps3 will go from strength to strength !

    Though for looks alone i do prefer the PS3 version of Quake Wars.

    Surprised not to Bad company. Have the 360 version after play demo on both versions, not sure why but they increased the video grain effect on the PS3 version and it just looks horrid!!! Do wonder at times if theres a secret alliance between MS and EA as alot of their PS3 conversion work is rubbish.

    Hopefully more devs will take the ID approach and get the 360 and PS3 version done separately from the ground up.

    I played SKATE on PS3 the other day, after much play on the 360. I knew it wasn't meant to perform as well as the 360 version but thought you wouldn't be able to tell the difference... I was shocked! It was crap! The frame rate was appalling, i was really truly surprised. I'm no technical whizz so I don't know what else may or may not have been suffering but next to the 360 version it really was a let down.

    Obviously the 360 is doing great, but I think it has more to do with the ease of porting PC code than anything else, to be honest. Though it has to be said ATI's 360 chip is doing a great job.

    However, ytu have to remember that 99% of these comparisons still involve games that have started development on PC or 360, and have then ported a version to PS3. The PS3 is much harder to code for, and has less in common with the PC compared to the 360, so there are more things that you should do differently to get the system to perform well.

    Which all goes to show that technical superiority isn't everything. The ease at which developers can get that performance out of the system is clearly equally important. For a smaller scale game where technical prowess is more important than art, you will see the power of one system vs the other more clearly. Think for instance of Super Stardust HD's Solo pack, and play Endless mode in it. Something like that is just amazing.

    Eurogamer's methodology is fairly solid. The author of this article discusses its tools on http://www.beyond3d.com< /a> for instance, with some graphics guys that know their stuff. But it is important to always know at what native resolution the comparisons have been made, obviously.

    Overall verdict:
    The 360 is slithly better in most terms on multiplatform games. Its also quite a bit cheaper and with many more exclusive "must own" games regarding most peoples tastes. The PS3 has the Blueray player though - theres no denying that. As a gamer with an exterior blueray player i am much better of with the 360 though no doubth.

    What a surprise. Journo criticises a technical element of a game on PS3, claiming it was worse than on 360 and you call bs. He, at least, has provided actual video evidence of what he is claming, whereas all you can do is say that 1) you haven't played the game all that much and 2) you didn't see that much tearing in the little time you did play it.

    Scratch going blind from doing it - you're going blind from Sony doing it to you. You're a huge Sony fanboy, yet all you do is call out the 360 ones (who are fanboys), while pretending that everything you say is logical and legitimate. But it isn't - all you do is wipe the worst of the rabid fanboy foam from your mouth and delude yourself just that little bit more.

    It seems to me the PS3 is losing with less difference lately. Maybe in a year they will be equal, and I suspect afterwards PS3 will be able to win these face-offs.

    The problem with PS3 so far seems to be the tiny marketshare it has, which is not encouragement to invest huge amounts to adapt to the uncommon architecture. More marketshare should help a lot.

    PS but until the PSthree comes out I'll stick with Wii & 360 ;-)

    So when will EG reach a conclusion? How many 'face offs' before you decide, just like the rest of us, that it really doesn't matter which version you buy as they are essentially identical across these two platforms? It's getting a bit dull. Why not focus on the exclusive games which differentiate the two platforms? I'd like to see a nice retrospective on Sonys wonderful PR campaign from three years ago that fundamentally undermined Microsoft. Or a story on whether all of the collective SKU packages provide choice or confusion for customers. Or some predictions on lessons learned by both companies that will influence the future.
    Also, what are Nintendo going to do next? Where do they go from here? The Wii is selling more than the PS3 and 360 combined in some markets. What will their next machine feature? How can they extend and build on what they have done with the Wii?

    but seriously the couple of points above are mainly true; all these games arent not made for PS3 and are usually not optimized vary well either. However with risk of sounding like a fanboy (i do so enjoy it XD) the PS3 exclusives (i feel) are on the whole way better than nething on the 360 and i do own both so i can make that statement.

    @Miths - What galls me about these HDD installs is that in the majority of cases the loading times are not improved beyond those of the same disc-based Xbox 360 multiformat game, perhaps 1-2 seconds at most. Thus what should give the PS3 the advantage is in fact used solely to disguise the fact that the Blu-ray Disc (BD) drive is actually far slower than the Xbox 360's DVD drive. Sure there are some games like Uncharted which manage seamless loading times with NO HDD installs but it's clear that mandatory HDD installs are on the increase for PS3 games, especially multiformat ones. While it might not be an issue for people like myself with 320 GB HDDs (bought specifically for these mandatory installs I might add), they are going to be an annoyance for people with 40 GB HDDs. Why should they have to upgrade... the PS3 is supposed to be a console not a PC... whatever happened being able to run games only off a disc?

Personally i hope it is not because i have one because i don't want a company as monopilistic as M$ and that cannot make an operating system or game console that actually works to rule another market and ultimatly ruin it.

    I can't comment on the final version of GRID on the PS3 but I have played the demos on both the 360 and PS3 and the latter had a hell of a lot more screen tearing than the 360 demo. Of course, the full 360 version, which I own, does have some screen tearing too but it's rare and restricted to when there's lots of cars and particle effects onscreen (i.e crashes!) and isn't in the slightest bit annoying.

    At the risk of incurring the wrath of PS3 "fan boys" it does seem to me from my experiences with games on both formats (remember I DO own both machines) that the 360 has the better graphics chip, being more advanced than the off-the-shelf GeForce 7900 GTX-based RSX and having the advantage of an additional super-fast 10 MB framebuffer which is what gives the 360 the anti-aliasing advantage over the PS3. That the PS3 is weak in the area of AA is no surprise to me since it was very much also the case with the PS2. I suspect the Cell might be more powerful than the Xbox 360's tripe core processor but so far we've seen little evidence of it.

    I dont care who wins i just want to have the best. And too me thats not the Wii no matter if it wins (it has probably won already).
    Its the 360 that has the edge and it will probably stay that way, no matter wich system is selling most. So even if the PS3 wins it will never be the best choice for most people or gamers.

    The PS3 wins = the consumers loose.

    Paying to much for an inferior merchandice its never a good thing.

    Went and bought a Falcon 360 which is a hell of a lot quieter then my previous 360. At this stage I am pretty p'od with the state of the Ps3. The difference in quality on the Grid demo is incredible. I just don't understand what is wrong with anti aliasing on the Ps3. And yes it does make a big difference if you are playing on a bigscreen HDTV. Which is the point after all.

    I think these articles are great. We need focus to be put on the ps3 and its current failings in the multi format wars. The reason is unimportant what matters is the fixing of it.

    @monkie_king - No, like legal PC games, you still need to insert the disc in order to play games even if they're installed to the HDD. Part of the reason is due to disc protection - otherwise could lend your friends the disc and they could install and play it for free - but another reason is that only some of the data is actually installed, i.e. the frequently read stuff like textures and level data. In the case of the latter it's a bloody good job as I'd hate to have a 32 GB install for MGS4... imagine how long that would take to install? EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEK!!! :o

    Kidding aside, it is now obivous that PS3 is not the destroyer of X360 that Sony had promised and you only need to read HOW the languages have changed from the comments posted in EG and particularly the head to head from the first round to now.

    Both consoles have its merits and pretty much equal (in loose terms, to the eyes of the casual observers watching the games), those questionings seriously the methodology used by EG, are the people would would praises it if PS3 was shown to be more powerful.

    Been already explained that percentage of tearings doesnt equate to actual time that we can see tearings on screen. Numbers of tearings do happen off screen but yes it is important for us to make clear what the figures actually translate to for us the gamers.

    It also differs if you play game with SD, 720p or 1080p. As console works harder with higher resolution and hence why there are few true 1080p native games on both consoles.

    I have both and happy with them but I have to say it is pretty much clear to me from my circle of friends/familes/work mates that PS3 is much more popular. Deserving or otherwise. So it is a question of time that PS3 will catch up but X360 still a great console to own and those hating it or the other is being irrational! I will continue to get X360 ahead of PS3 when its come to multi platform titles as often a better one even if only very slightly.

And second of all, I won't take it like a *man* as you so put it because we all know what happened with GTAIV when Eurogamer knew from the start the PS3 version was better. So what if people who own two systems support this? I'm about to own two systems as well and I'm not bragging about it. Developers are starting to learn about the PS3 more so this will change in due time. But for Eurogamer to come up with this bull?

    @monkie_king - Yes, you're absolutely correct about MGS4's split HDD installs. I'm thinking it's to keep the install times bearable but as you correctly say it's also to avoid having a 20+ GB HDD install in the first place, something that would not sit well with 40 GB HDD PS3 owners!!! LOL

    Well considering the playstation 3 hasn't suffered the same level of failures as the 360 with Rrod and the admittance of m$ that there is inherent design faults with 360 id say M$ wins = consumers lose (not loose) I certainly don't pay for inferior !

    Of course, I'm sure EG would do this if they could but let's face it, in 99.8% of cases, it is the 360 version of any multiformat game that is usually better so I tend to go for that one automatically. I do read IGN and GameSpot's reviews though to find out if there are any differences and that is the reason for me buying Burnout Paradise and Devil May Cry 4 for the PS3 rather than the 360, mainly just for a change. In the case of the latter I do think it's the better version as it has less tearing (well I actually never saw any at all in my two playthroughs) and I preferred the controller having played the previous games on the PS2.

    People who criticise Eurogamer for their comparison are just Sony fanboys crying in their milk because their beloved Playstation 3 is worse than the 360 every conceivable way.

    This just proves that Sony fanboys are purely "brand" loyal morons who have never played the 360.

    P.S. I own both 360 and PS3 and the 360 is soooooooo much better graphically and when it comes to basic gameplay and useablility.

    Worse thing about using v-lock in Indy Jones is the tendancy for the console to completely lock up when you load a new chapter. Thwe workaround is turning v-lok on and off but I keep forgetting and either playing with screen tear or tryig to load a new chaptetr and have the console lock up.

    They seem to have skimped on other areas of QA with at least one death loop (the bridge) and innapropriate 'character pulling' when switching characters or in mutliplayer. I sometimes find some of the perspectives on jumps challanging to judge becuase there isnt much to reference the angles against. Overall a pretty good game and the EG reveiw was pretty spot on.

    While I agree with what you otherwise wrote, it's a bit odd that you end with this comment when you admit you also own a PS3!!! I mean the PS3 has sold well because of its brand name and people like you and me who are multiformat gamers who went out and bought one! ;)

    The PS3 isn't a bad game machine anyway, it's actually bloody good, but then I can't play gems like MGS 4, Uncharted, Ratchet & Clank ToD and MotorStorm on my Xbox 360. No, if anything it's the fact that despite the PS3 arriving a year after the Xbox 360, it's apparent (to me anyway) that the machine isn't quite as powerful as Sony claimed (twice as powerful as the Xbox 360, my arse!!!), certainly not graphically anyway. If the machine really was superior to the Xbox 360 then it would be regularly trouncing it in these tests just as the Xbox arguably did over the PS2 with their multiformat games. Yeah, we've heard the arguments that the PS3 is harder to code for and that developers are struggling in comparison with the 360 but if that's still the case then Sony need to help them as much as possible with the PS3 and do something about future hardware design and software libraries so that the PS4 is much easier to code for. After all, the PS2 was criticised also for being difficult to code for in the early days too so it seems like Sony learnt nothing from that at all.

    @link'sdad - I played LEGO Indy on my 360 with V-sync on throughout, never once disabling it, and I finished it with over 20 hours on my save file with NO freezes or crashes at all. I played it for over six hours in one session too. Of course, I may have just been very lucky but I don't see how enabling V-Sync would cause the game to crash... the Xbox 360 is a fickle beast I know but not that fickle! LOL

    I agree in a sense, it is without a doubt a brilliant all round machine which obviously has benefits over 360 but in terms of games machine alone, for me personally, I have to say 360 is the better machine. But that's the fun about these discussions, none of us are really ever right because opinion is always different.:)

    Of course (I'm surprised Les hasn't popped in to say this!) little baby Wii is still doing better than both of them with the kiddie and casual market......

    Hmmm..... Ive not got involved in one of these PS3 vs 360 threads yet though I have read them and it seems theres an awful lot of mud flinging that goes on.

    Ive had pretty much every console (including handhelds) since the Atari 2600 and most of them import machines to boot (Im a fanboy of GAMES not of manufacturers). I had the 360 at launch and have only just got the PS3 with Metal Gear as there was nothing really that I couldnt already have on 360 til now. I think it looks fantastic though of course cannot compare it to anything as it doesnt exist on 360. I would go as far as to say that it looks better than any 360 game Ive played thus far which could go towards the argument that cross platform isnt great for Sonys machine. Sonys machine is also far superior in terms of manufacture and the remote play (via PSP) features and so on.

    HOWEVER.......

    It really doesnt come close to 360s XBL implementation and though only a small thing achievements are sorely missed. I think on that alone I would buy the 360 versions of X platform games as most stuff has online features and XBL is where its at plus all my mates have 360 so its a no brainer really.

    At the end of the day if youre a gamer then I think the only way to feed your thirst for games is to have all consoles and this has been the same since the days of the SNES and MD. People flinging mud should stop wasting their time and get on with enjoying their console for its merits. Which in this case it would seem both have in ample portions (though in different areas). It just depends on what floats your boat. Sometimes DS is my console of choice and then I go over to the PSP - its totally clear which one is more powerful but lets face it who cares when you get great experiences on both.

    Ill continue to read these articles as I think they are of interest and very useful. I just wish they didnt ignite such playground mentality through these threads. Though Im pretty sure that wish is one that will be unlikely to come true..........

    Only a fanboy would bring up the rrod because its not an issue anymore. MS has solved it and nobody has been affected too badly about it. You actually get a new console you know. MS loose in this case not the consumers and thats fine by me. In my case i got a new console with HDMI support so i actually got better off getting a better model than my old releaseday version.

    Everybody already knows that GPU in PS3 is only slightly upgraded midrange GF7600GT taken from PC at the last moment when it came to light that projected 2xCell PS3 with no GPU would be no match compared to X360 with dedicated GPU.
    RSX - 128bit 8ROP 500Mhz 256MB GDDR3. - all of it from 7600GT
    ONLY pixel shaders were doubled from 12 to 24. (like in 7800 series)

    Thats why custom built GPU in X360 being newer technology (nearly DX10 card) beats it in most cases.

    You need to write specialy optimised engines that use RSX in tandem with Cell to show what PS3 is capable.

    Why do people care so much about Achievements? Is it a personal thing, i.e you like to make sure you get everything you can out of a game, the full 1,000 GPs, or is it purely about having a nice large GamerScore so everyone can see it? If a game is good then it shouldn't need Achievements IMO. I never enjoyed MGS 4 or Super Mario Galaxy less because they didn't have Achievements. There are some nice points to having Achievements (the aforementioned personal goal thing) but mostly I think they're a wasted opportunity and have become increasingly meaningless over the years. Oh look I got 5 GPs for pressing START in The Simpsons but I only got a lousy 5 GPs for playing Blue Dragon for 50 hours... yeah right, that's fair!!! LOL

    Counter arguments that PS3 is best because X360 is RROD piece of crap is wearing thin but at least it is better than the oversold crap of PS3 being x2 pwnful than X360 or such as was repeatingly used last year and now fast disappearing from the comments.

    PS3 owners have slowly woken up to the fact that PS3 is just as powerful as X360 but yes have plus points as I can readily agree, but still cant understand why X360 is so dissed as a disatrous crap?

    Sony did almost go without GPU as they had believed their own hype of cell being able to do anything but glad that they did change their mind and have GPU included at a very late stage. Not as good as X360's but close enough really so that PS3 owners are not depressed that X360 have all the best looking games.

    X360 are jealous of MSG4 and secretly hoping that will come the way of BioShock coming to other console a year or more later. Business is just business and Sony will want to keep hold of their few remaining jewels compared to their previous gen.

    My housemate's boyfriend owns a game shop in town, so yes, I have access to both, although I have yet to play the full retail copy of GRID. However, I played the PS3 demo and witnessed screen tearing on a par with PGR3 and Richard said that the retail copy evidenced the same problems as the demo - and seeing as he provided video footage of what he witnessed, I am inclined to believe him over a forumite who regularly bemoans Eurogamer as being biased against the PS3 (MGS4 review comments stand out as recent examples) and whinges about 360 fanboys (often justified, though).

    With regards to the swearing, I have no problem with swearing in and of itself, when it is appropriate - but your use of it smacked of someone who was far too emotional, especially as it was over what percentage the screen tore on a PS3 title. Out of all the things to get so upset about you have to resort to swearing, this really shouldn't be anywhere near the top of the list.

    But I guess that's fanboys for you - obviously, saying anything which may in any way denigrate the name of whichever vast multinational corporation to which they have sworn allegiance, is a sin which can never be forgiven, nor forgotten.

    It's not about points or completionism, but well structured achievements can genuinely add something to a game. So that when you complete a game normally you should still have some tracked targets to attain. If a game just does points for getting to a certain point it more or less misses the point.

    The Gamerpoints are a bit silly in that they aren't consistent. Each game has to give away 1000 points so a dev who bothers to be creative ends up giving away less points for something where a lazier dev can end up just spliting the points over a couple of achievements you'll get automatically for completing the game.

    I agree that I cannot speak of first-hand experience of the full game. However, all I can do until I can arrange to do so is reiterate that Richard has provided video evidence of what he claims, as well as using some very expensive kit to extract said evidence.

    You, on the other hand, seem hell bent on defending the PS3 version of GRID, as it seems to me that you have interpreted this as an 'anti-PS3 attack' on Sony, perpetrated by Eurogamer.

    I personally think that EG do a fantastic job, especially considering we get this site for free and therefore see no contradiction in my pointing things out and even occasionally defending them in certain instances. Even more so because we actually get to communicate with the team - the personal touch, if you will.

    Sony, on the other hand, couldn't give a monkeys what you think of them - neither do Microsoft and neither do Nintendo (by and large, although they have undoubtedly realised the profits to be made in occasionally pandering to the fans).

    @Arbiter - Playing Dead Rising via VGA or HDMI @ 1360x768 are we? Try dropping the resolution down to 1280x720 and the "unholy amount of tearing" you're referring to will be substantially reduced to only occasional tearing as it is with component video @ 720p. I found this out by playing with the resolution settings.

    Since when is that a big problem? Having read an article that states an opinion that some games are better on 360? That's not a probelm, it's a solution! You go to his house and play MGS4, he comes to yours and play Tenchu Z (perhaps not the best example but stilll my favourite game on 360).

    Now neither of you has to buy both consoles but can still play the exclusives! Unless you actualy stop speaking to him, in which case it could be, as you say, a problem. But keep speaking and I think you'll come out with more numerous exclusives AND have acccess to the PS3 ones \o/

MGS 4 what is so special about the graphics (i'm about 3/4 way through - I think!) ?...haven't seen anything to me that confirms this can't be done on 360 - even many games on 360/PS3 that have come before MGS 4 do look better (I'm not talking about the cut-scenes).

    Fable 2, Too Human, Alan Wake, Banjo & Kaziooe, Splinter Cell Convection, Alan Wake, Forza 3, Halo Wars, Cry-On..just a few exclusives to 360 - and yes Gears Of War 2. It's amazing how you convince yourself that Killzone 2, Resistance 2 will be 2nd coming when in fact they were both 1st games shit fps. And aren't they sequels too!

    What are you talking about! I played Drake - and was not over impressed by the graphics. Very good for a PS3, but nothing that proves the PS3 is more powerful then 360. Oh! Killzone 1 was SHIT. Resistance was a poor mans fps (though PS3 has limited choice so claim this is the best in the world), and the graphics were just plain average.

    I do have both console and so far have only played 5 games on PS3 - MGS 4, Motor Storm, Drakes Fortune, Rachet & ClanK. I have Tekken 5 for online...Also have a 360 with - Halo 3, Dead Rising, Half Life / Portal (better & cheaper on 360 ) Gears Of War, Flatout, Call Of Duty 4 (better on 360), Ghostr Recon AW 2 (much better on 360), Guitar Hero, Virtua Fighter 5 (cheaper, online and looks/ plays better on 360), Virtua Tennis (same reason as VF 5), Vina Pantna, with classic games now in HD downloads like: Ikargai, Rez etc.

    The point is for games,Variety, online, graphics - framerates - price (games) - downloads - exclusives - pc/360 games - multiformat - THE WINS EASILY.

    I'm perfectly happy being a PS3 owner, and have never had any reason to think otherwise (having already owner a 360), but tnt_2008 has made me reconsider. I certainly can't own the same console as someone without a Return key on their keyboard! Better just trade-in for a PC. There may be snobbery there but it's all gramatically correct.

    Me a fanboy? Yeah right. I dont like MS to much and if the PS3 was a better gaming console i would have focused on that. Of the three current gen consoles the 360 is the best choice atleast for hardcore gamers. Its just happens to be the truth. Thats all. The PS3 owners that say otherwise has never owned a 360 and dont really know what they are missing out on. I can easily afford a gaming console every week of the year if id liked so i wouldnt opt for the second best would i.

    As for me I do have a 50 '' 1080p pioneer plasma tv and PS3 & 360 and I do compare the games on both PS3 & 360. I'm not a fan of 360 or PS3 but to me the 360 is simply a better gaming machine in all departments. - graphics, games, exclusives, variety, online, downloads, price for games, extra contents on games, better games, HD classic game download games...The 360 does beat the PS3!

And there are other examples too, so it's false to claim the PS3 games here are _all_ ports.

    So the games don't all look the same because the devs are 'just porting the xbox games to ps3', since even when this is clearly not the case (GRID, COD4, Burnout, DMC4 etc), the games STILL look the same.

    They look the same because both consoles have similar power overall, not because devs are lazy. :)

    I find these articles very useful and informative. I own both consoles and want to know which has the best version and the reasons why so I can decide which one to buy. I tend to go with the 360 for FPS’s as I prefer the controller but for other game types this is not so much of an issue. However, there are so many factors to consider such as frame rate, screen tear, resolution and online performance.

    I can judge a certain amount from demos, for example, the Grid demo was far superior on the 360. However, early demos are meant to be a work in progress so things can change and this is where these articles prove so useful. Plus I am a graphics whore!

    I find out which version is better before I get it.

    DMC 4, AO2 and Dark Sector are Identical on both consoles.

    I've read that BF:BC, Burnout Paradise and Overlord are superior on the ps3, with imo GTA IV being superior on the 360.

    Euro 360 Gamer are nothing but 360 fanboys, they're Face offs prove this along with only giving MGS 4 8/10.

    They gave Halo 3 a 9 or 10 wtf? MGS 4 is superior, if it was released on the 360, a definite 10/10.

    I may sound like a ps3 fanboy (im not, I own all 3 consoles), but in actual fact, how the hell can the 360 always be the overall winner?

    In they're Force Unleashed hands on, they said both the 360 and ps3 versions are identical, yes until Euro 360 Gamer say the 360 version is superior, which they will.

    Ok so some 360 versions are superior, so are some of the ps3's, there is no way one can come out on top every time.

    In this case, its only in Euro 360 Gamer's head., they're promoting for M$ and possibly being paid by them.
