Far Cry disappointed me greatly, as I’d imagine it did many others, I think I got probably about 10% of the way through the story then got bored and I’ve never been back to finish it.

That’s quite rare for me as usually I’d finish even the worst piles of poo, but the fact I’d clear out a checkpoint then literally drive back a minute later to find it repopulated with the same people I had shot in the face previously was too annoying.

Don't worry Menage I recognise a sarcastic comment when it slaps me in the face. You could always try sticking a few !!! after you sarcastic comment in future to help out those that assume everything everyone writes is serious.

Well, the only update I wanted was one that sorted out the looking around. The acceleration of your view as you look around is set far too high and makes this the hardest FPS to control ever. So much so, I've all but given up on the game, and it's not because I wasn't enjoying it, but when the controls feel awkward it takes the enjoyment out of the game. Although there's a lot about it I like, I would never consider playing a sequel to this again if those viewing controls remain like this. And although I've created a really nice multiplayer map, I don't actually care to play it because I hate the game's controls. Has anyone else found this to be a problem, or is a friend who owns this and myself the only people that found this an issue?

Amen to that, brother! That combined with every single mission objective being on the complete opposite side of the map to where it was triggered made it increasingly turgid and frustrating to play. I gave up shortly after reaching the second map. It's not often a game turning out to be twice as big as I thought it would be is a disappointment, but in this case it just meant even more constantly respawning enemies to keep schlepping past.

Shame really. Great world, great setting, great weapons, great story. One idiotic design decision (presumably designed to add 'challenge', or 'value' by extending the play time) completely screwed the whole thing up. I wish they'd just fix it. Anyone know of a PC homebrew patch for it? It's a bug bear of so many people I'd be surprised if someone with mad code skillz didn't try to tackle it eventually.

I actually quite like it. Yes it can be extremely repetitive, but I just play it in short bursts, doing one mission, finding some diamnds and quit before Ii get enough. Just like most Ubi games!!!! (at least this one let's you aim yourself). All I'm missing is a freaking radar to see where the guys are who are shooting me.

Coin-Op you cantankerous little coprolite, I played the game for a lot longer than the 10% story would suggest, and driving around that rather lovely presented savannah back and forth, back and forth, back and forth gave me time to think about the same enemies that kept attacking me even though I had urinated on their open graves only five minutes previously.

I found the way the game played quite good, though the fact I shoot someone in the chest fifteen times with an automatic rife, and all they have to defend themselves is a cotton vest, and they don’t die is a bit annoying, but hey ho, if it works for Jon McClane it works for them.

“Play the game if you want any credibility”

I clearly had, whether I play it for one minute or one million doesn’t mean I can’t form an opinion now does it?

I have enjoyed playing Mercs 2, which although 3rd person I think of as being in the same camp as FR2, maybe even Just Cause. a whole lot more than the 10 odd hours I spent in the company of FR2.

Yeah I found the same problem with the controls, the right stick has the acceleration of the space shuttle..who the hell came up with that design? FPS's are hard enough on the controller without making it more difficult. I gave up struggling and had to use the auto-aim because I did enjoy the game (well 70% of it) apart from the controls. I'm not sure if I can be bothered finishing it now, the last time I played it was in January, then I got save-game bug.

I loved the game and did finish it, but by the end I was really scared of the game crashing and corrupted data, that I saved after every mission and tried to keep several saves on the go at once. At one point I had 10 hours to do over again, so this can only be a good thing, but this should NEVER happen again.

People who actually played through it til the end, like myself, tend to consider "Far Cry 2" one of the best FPS of this generation, a masterpiece in so many ways.

Not a game for everyone, I agree.
Doesn´t have a funny gimmick or tons of over-the-top action scenes, not even monsters from outerspace or deep sea crappy no-IA jumping clowns...

Far Cry 2 has a great story with living characters, a truthful and honest aproach to a typical war zone in so many african countries.

I presume that later in the game you gain access to stakes and holy wafers so you can bury these guys under the crossroads they defend with a stake through the heart and put holy wafers in their sewn-up mouths. It works for zombies and vampires, might work on whatever kind of undead these are. Sprinkle holy water on the corpses too. Unless you've had your urine blessed. ;)

It was pretty but repetitive and that respawning checkpoint BS was very irritating to me; slogging through the same encounter again and again in a FPS just seems like poor design to me.

I got to second map of FC2 and was quite enjoying things, then it would stick on the loading screen when I went to my latest game. Is this what the patch fixes?

To the haters - yes this game was a bit of a slog in places, and it was tough as month old poop, and the random death jeeps were annoying, but, when it was good, it was really good.

When you nail the convoys with your roadside IEDs, and when you get the silent dart gun, and the stealth suit - then it can get cool, when the AI behaves itself!

The atmosphere and sense of actually being in another place are unrivalled. The artists for this game are legends.

That's exactly the problem.. the acceleration is set way too high. I've just gone back to it today after months off because those controls really make it unpleasant to play. Don't get me wrong I think there's some really excellent features of the game. It looks good, but it feels awkward and you feel uncomfortable with the controls it doesn't matter how good the game is.

It always brings up the same old question. Why can't the developers give us full control over the controls. If we could change X and Y speed, and acceleration, all indepedently then everyone would be able to set games to suit the senstivity they like to play with. To date only the boys who make Riddick and The Darkness have ever been thoughtful (or clever) enough to give you this sort of control. How many hours (if not minutes!) does it take to build in a few more control adjustments? Really it's like a car manufacturer not allowing you to change the seat positions... or perhaps more like one manufacturer completely changing the relationship between the turn of the steering wheel and the wheels.

Anyway, after a couple of hours of playing the game today, I really can't be bothered to play it anymore. This is the very first time I've given up on a first person shooter. That's some going seeing as I love first person shooters and have been playing them since the early 90s. And I've learnt a valuable lesson with this developer's games. Oh and added to the control problems, that update they released to resolved corrupt saves.... well I didn't have a corrupt save until the update was applied! Had to go back an hour and a half because of it. Nice work guys... How to lose customers and influence them to steer clear of your future games.

darkphoenix,
Do you really think if anyone doesn't like this game it's purely because it doesn't have monsters? Clever argument. Respawning check points. Arcade shooting. One nut engine fix. Or in my case, poor controls. There are many reasons why people may not like the game, and no doubt it's a combination of many little issues, but to assume it's because there's no monsters is a pathetic argument. If you love the game, great. But the need to insult people, ridicule their opinion or question their intelligence because they don't care for it, and let's be honest, because you have total anonomity on the internet, shows you up to be a spiteful, unpleasant boy.

JensonJet: IO Interactive did the same thing in Kane and Lynch. I thought the controls were a bit bobbins until I had a fiddle and set it up how I like.

I agree with you. How many PC shooters don't let you tweak the mouse sensitivity? Approximately zero. The first thing I do on loading one up is adjust the sensitivity to how I like it, and if I couldn't I'd find 95% of them completely unplayable.

Got this at full price after reading all those raving professional reviews out there (should've waited for metacritic user comments instead duh), can't remember the last time I was so disappointed by a game - the beginning sequence was great but shortly after the broken game mechanics revealed themselves.

Really tried to get into it playing it for a couple of hours now and then but constantly having to face the respawning/bulletproof t-shirt wearing/xray-vision enabled AI and the lengthy commutes across the large map made me snap eventually - uninstalled and can't say I missed playing it since. So I ending up with a pricey game-themed beer mat - "cheers" Ubisoft!
