Wright getting lifetime BAFTA News

PC PlayStation 2 PSP DS Xbox 360 PlayStation 3 Wii
News by Robert Purchese

15 October, 2007

Will Wright will become the first videogame "celebrity" to be awarded the Fellowship BAFTA; joining the ranks of recognised and household names like Dame Judi Dench, Alfred Hitchcock and Steven Spielberg.

It will be the first time the award has branched out into games, as it can apparently no longer ignore their massive impact on day-to-day life - especially if you read The Daily Mail.

Wright will receive his award on 23rd October (or a day before my birthday), and be applauded for his work on creating enormous franchises like SimCity and The Sims.

His current master work Spore is being allowed to take its jolly time, however, and the last we heard was that it would be out sometime after March next year.

Other games up for BAFTA awards this year include the likes of BioShock, Gears of War and Okami, and a full list can be found behind you.

Heh; 'a day before my birthday'.

Whilst I never played The Sims very much, it was pretty much a household game as just about everyone who had a PC owned the game.

Am I the only one who read that and first thought "Phoenix Wright?"

I instantly thought of Phoenix Wright as well. Will Wright hasn't done much for me after Sim City.

Well... it's a British award...

And Will Wright is American...

I would have thought that Miyamoto would be more deserving myself, also...

I can't think of anyone who's made a bigger contribution in bringing games into the mainstream, so this is a hugely well deserved award.

To me Miyamoto is like Michael Jordan: no one has done as much as him for the growth of videogaming. Also he delivered by far the longest list of AAA titles. I cant even think of anyone close to his level of contribution to gaming. Long live to the King!

Oh i genuinely always thought he was a Briton, sorry.

I would also agree that Miyamoto would be more deserving but I guess Wright is in there because of the Sims.

Lol. If Der_tolle_Emil is a gamer, then of course it is.

But Miyamoto gets people who are already gamers to buy many more games, he doesn't get non-gamers to try stuff out imo...

Who came up with the design of the Wii remote, they have done pretty well.... If it was Miyamoto (I've never been a big Nintendo fan tbh, so i may well be talking gibberish!) then fair enough.

All gamers are one person. Where do you draw the line as to whose opinion matters?

When there are significantly more than 1 of them. Or, as a helpful shorthand, if an opinion is posted on a eurogamer comments thread, it's probably worthless.

zOMG. Paradox!

I hear Will Wright is a pretty nice guy. And, from what I've seen of him on Gamasutra's GDC coverage a couple of years back, he seems to know his stuff. Kudos to him, say I.

FYI:

the game has 30 missions not 50 + 60 challenges
