Worms DLC tomorrow

New gardens to wriggle through.

Developer Team 17 has confirmed that the first batch of downloadable content will be available for Worms XBLA tomorrow.

There will be three new maps to choose from: Hell Landscape and Jungle Landscape at 150 Microsoft points a piece, and Space Landscape for free. In addition there'll be a free sound pack to update foreign language voices, as well as add classic vocals to enhance your wrigglers.

Meanwhile those of you with presentation problems can enjoy a couple of desktop themes for 150 points each, or simply wallow in a Gamer Picture pack of five snaps for 100 points, or 12 for 200.

Or, presumably, you could just pour fairy liquid over your garden and trample around on the grass, then wait patiently for the worms to show their faces before sticking hooks through them and feeding them to the fish. It's up to you.

Worms was released earlier this year on Live Arcade and scored solidly with critics. It's more of the classic 2D action we all remember and love, but it isn't anything new. You can find out more over in our Worms review.

Alternatively pop over to the Team 17 website for a look at the new maps available tomorrow, and to see the latest news for the game.

Great to finally see some DLC, but 150 points for a map is pretty bloody expensive. And when are we going to see the Concrete Donkey? :-(
  • Leviathan #3 5 years ago

    Too expensive, won't buy.
I like worms, but this is a rip-off.
  • Machiavel #4 5 years ago

Free soundfonts and map, that's good.

I think the thumbnails and wallpapers must be lucrative from people using up their leftover points - either that or we are all doomed to proliferate stupidity.
  • BBIAJ #5 5 years ago

    @Britesparc:

We're never going to see the Concrete Donkey, or the Holy Hand Grenade for that matter, as Team 17 have said time and time again, that the XBLA version of Worms, is Worms going back to it's roots, to the original, first ever Worms.

So all the fancy shmancy stuff of later games... forget it.

i fail to see how you can see these new maps as expensive, i bought the psp version of worms for 45 euros... and i bought the orginal download of Worms XBLA for under 10 euros... a couple of extra euros for some new maps seems fair.

that said, at under 2 euros a map i'm not quite sure that expensive is even the right word - in the netherlands, where you pay to take a pee in a public place, thats worth about 3 bathroom breaks.

    cheap bastards.

@Moogrose: So you are willing to pay 45 Euro for the remake of a 12 year old game.
Just wondering: How much then is a game like Oblivionor Gears of War worth to you, which takes like 100 times more work to develop?
Just wondering, because if your opinion is representative, either those AAA titles are being sold way to cheap or the devs should really go back to developing pac-man and tetris clones if people are willing to pay the same money for that.

Taking 45 Euro for a game like worms was ok in times when an average game sold 50.000 units, the development tools were bad and the game was new.

But today, taking such a price for a remake is very greedy, and paying it is - well - sorry to say that, but I think it's just stupid.

@Leviathan: I understand where you're coming from, to an extent. but i don't measure the value of a product by how much time, money and expertise went into making it...

i can tell you this, i have gotten far more value from my 45 euro purchase of worms then i did from my 60 euro purchase of gears of war. but thats just me, its all personal you see... but my point stands, that anything under a couple of euros to the likes of gamers who spend the kind of money gamers do on the next gen systems, it's just not alot of money. at all.

that said, to you perhaps its not worth it for the value and pleasure you derive from this "re-hashed" version of worms, well then, thats on you isn't it? and thats ok... but you can't convice me that its pricey.

I'm with Moogrose. This is reasonably priced stuff if you ask me. Some free bits and costs for stuff if you really want it. I like what they did with Worms on the 360. It was cheap, cheerful and a hell of a lot of fun for the price.
  • optimusprym8 #10 5 years ago

There's loads for free there and if you don't want to pay for extra backgrounds then don't. God-fucking-damn whingers, it's only a couple of quid for fucks sake! So what if there's a PC version for £2, I want it on the 360, online, with voice support against my mates... yes the ninja rope on the joypad is shit but I would still rather support T17 than a retail store with a 2nd hand copy.
  • menage #11 5 years ago

I love worms 360. It's a blast on live. I don't need weird stuff like exploding sheep. It makes it less tactical.

I think paying for in game backgrounds is reasonable. But the pics and wallapers have to go. I hate that shit.
They just released 10 of thise things for Rumble Roses. A crap 2 year old game. It's polluting Live. Add another character or something, oh no, nobody bought the game.

They recently did lemmings for PSN ;)

    /is being a bastard.

Part of the reason for not including this in the original package was that Worms was before the internal MS deadline for larger XBLA games. So it had to fit on a memory card. The background packs and voice packs were large. Now they have the opportunity to put them up as an expansion why shouldn't they charge for them? They have associated costs, it's not just PC backgrounds it's all new.

    @Bloodkult
"I'd rather not pay for what should have been in the game in first place? What's so hard to understand?"

What about the people who'd rather not pay for stuff they wouldn't use? You are making the assumption that if they included all this in the initial release it would have been the same price. They have obviously come up with a pricing model which matches their development costs. You're the one with the the choice, you don't have to buy any of it.

They have obviously come up with a pricing model which matches their profit ambitions.

    /fixed
  • DrDamn #15 5 years ago

How dare they want profits - who the hell do they think they are? They should sell at a loss and then give us more free stuff!
  • skillian #16 5 years ago

Of course they want profit. I'm just pointing out that it's not development costs that drive the price of DLC, any more than development costs drive the price of mobile ring tones.

My point was that the price for DLC would have been factored in to the overall pricing structure - i.e. sell the main game cheaper because we can make more money from the DLC. It's not something they decided on afterwards to cash in on their success is it? It was partly necessitated by MS size policy, in fact the fact there was going to be DLC later of this type was talked about by the developer at the time of release.

Its all very well saying 'Its a rip off, I can buy for £3' or whatever, but I dont WANNA play worms on my PC.
The whole pack is still around £10. When I bought worms for the PS1 it was £20.

Furthermore im not interested in what the dev tools are like now VS what they were like then.

Bottom line. Worms is fun. Its also quite cheap. If you dont think so, dont buy it. Ive had my £6.50 worth out of it. Im sure im not alone !
