Work on Red Alert PS3 officially halted

But EA hasn't said why.

EA has halted work on its first PS3 real-time strategy game, Red Alert 3.

The build queue has most definitely been paused, the publisher told Eurogamer, but why, or if and when it will start up again is still under wraps.

Meanwhile, the Xbox 360 and PC versions are unaffected by the decision, and will benefit from the refocused development resources.

The master plan is still to release the third Red Alert instalment on those platforms this autumn.

Head over to our Red Alert 3 gamepage to see what it looks like, and how EA LA is planning to finally nail RTS controls on console.

    Insurpassable hardware limitations.

    Yes I went there.
  • speedjack #2 4 years ago

    I'm guessing technical issues too.

    If I was a PS3 owner I'd be getting a bit pissed off with all this.
  • Dizzy #3 4 years ago

    This decision was made following an internal review of all games and it was deemed that with the incredibly strong list of exclusive first party titles coming up both this year and in the near future
  • ps3owner #4 4 years ago

    I am pissed of with it! why the fuck have they stopped it?! GIVE ME A REASON!!!

    Well I suppose I could play it on the PC, then again... haven't had an upgrade for 5 years now... maybe that's why I'd play it on the PS3 ;)

    they could provide keyboard + mouse support... that would be brilliant.
  • Darkedge #8 4 years ago

    @dizzy - hehe, don't you just love Sony's spindoctors trying desperately to put a brave face on things?
  • Darren #9 4 years ago

    "EA soon to announce they're to drop support for the PS3 completely and concentrate on the Xbox 360 and PC" shocker! ;)
  • BiscuitBase #10 4 years ago

    Well at least us PS3 owners have still got HAZE to play
  • GamesConnoisseur #11 4 years ago

    Slightly interested in the reason as to why it was dropped but its not earth shaking for PS3 owners as most of them are also PC owners and they will say prefer it on PC anyway. But be clear that at start of the year EA have said they believed PS3 to do well this year and indeed will overtake X360 total base eventually, but this cancellation means exactly what?
  • Bealsy #12 4 years ago

    Remind me what else is due on the PS3 this year bar MGS4 and Little Big "Lets make a level out of titties" Planet?

    Is this the sort of news that Dreamcast/n64 owners got use to as the devs abandoned the format.

    teh ps3 is dhooomeed!

    / it could just be that it's going to be a MS exclusive or what has already been said about it being difficult to code for the ps3, maybe it will come out a few months later.
  • stepneg #15 4 years ago

    There was me thinking it might be a slow afternoon, has anyone told Swam, headbog etc...
  • seasidebaz #16 4 years ago

    maybe they decided ps3 owners don't want ports of crusty old pc games that haven't advanced since windows 95?

    yes i went there too.
  • Waffleaber #17 4 years ago

    As a Dreamcast/n64 owner I don't remember many cross-platform games being announced in the first place!
  • Darren #18 4 years ago

    Actually the PS3 would be perfect for C&C Red Alert 3 because unlike the Xbox 360 for example, it has native support for a keyboard and mouse, which would make the game an absolute joy to play, right?
  • keyboardmonkey #19 4 years ago

  • Laika #20 4 years ago

    Good. Anything that stops RTSs from spreading to consoles.
  • phatb0y #21 4 years ago

    Probably technical issues. If that is the case then thank God I've got a gimped console.

    You can keep your formulaic autism simulators on the PC thanks.
  • SpaceMidget75 Verified Senior Software Developer, Minerva Computer Services #22 4 years ago

    It's like owning a Dreamcast all over again! Colin Mcrae & Half-Life anyone?

    I don't believe for one minute that they're only keeping the 360 version going because of the points Arbiter made. They've already released BFME II and C&C3 on the system with Kanes Wrath on the way too. If they didn't think this would sell well enough on 360 they would know by now.

    EA had good things to say about future games sales on PS3 so either they've re-evaluated this forecast or they basing this decision on a demograpic of PS3 owners that just buy endless interations of Sports and NFS games!
  • Prodigy_BE #23 4 years ago

    This sucks. I was looking forward to this.
  • rhinoxious #24 4 years ago

    It's likely to be a bottom line issue, but it doesn't have to be.

    Well-trained staff don't grow on trees, and theu may have too many other projects on to also put people on the PS3 version.

    The again PS3 could be d00m3d!!!
  • Bealsy #25 4 years ago

    errrrr.... no native support for mouse/keyboard? So if I plug my USB keyboard into my 360 what happens?

    Oh yeah. It works. Get your facts right next time eh?
  • ps3owner #26 4 years ago

    C&C 1 is available on PSN, might give that a go to calm my nerves ;)

    how are the controlls on that? anyone? (I know the game full well from PC anyway, just wondering about the controller)

  • keyboardmonkey #27 4 years ago

    @Ps3owner

    The PS1 had a mouse!

    You could also play it with a controller though, sorry never played it just like that.
  • ps3owner #28 4 years ago

    so I could connect my mouse to it then. need to read up about it.
  • mikew1985 #29 4 years ago

    I bought a PS3 about 2 months ago... not that i planned on getting this game or the two cancelled yesterday it is still disheartining. I hopw there is a lot revealed at e3.

    I haven't touched my PS3 since before GTA4 came out (got if for 360)... but i really like the machine and this cancelling business is less than encouraging :(

    Generic as the C&C series is, I would love to have seen it surface on PS3. Still I did C&C3 on the PC (while at lunch @ work!) so will probably do Red Alert that way.

    Plodded through vaguely enjoying it, but haven't been spurred on to finish the GDI missions or indeed start the Nod ones. Don't have the hours for multiplayer.

  • septimus #34 4 years ago

    EA suck at coding. So no surprise.

    Controls would be really hard to nail down on PS3, especially with it supporting keyboard and mouse.

    Just looked at the screenshots and videos. Wow, that would really push PS3, no wonder only 360 and a PC with at least 2 jigabytes of ram with an FX96000000billion could process it. /sarcasm

    Game from yesteryear gets dropped. Big deal, it's been boring for ages IMO.

    Dropping just the PS3 version, I guess it's hassle to make games for it full stop so dropping a 'weak' game kind of makes sense. Gives lots of ammo to the other side though ;)
  • Darren #36 4 years ago

    @Bealsy - I said keyboard AND mouse...I deliberately italicised the word 'and' to point that out but you clearly missed that. There's no point in playing an RTS with just a keyboard, is there? So my facts are correct since the Xbox 360 doesn't support mice! :p

    Do I detect a bitter undertone there? :p
  • NorUraeus #38 4 years ago

    Could be that Microsoft paid them to put the PS3 version on hold. Seems due to having a rather lacklustre exclusive lineup Microsoft is trying to compensate by making deals with developers to delay the PS3 versions. The European launch of Rockband is a good example of this policy.

    Although the PS1 had a mouse (it has a PS1 conector so you need an official Sony PS1 mouse) C and C didn't support it - for some retarded reason. The only game that did (as I recall) was XCom.

    C and C with a pad on PS1 was almost unplayable imo.

    RTS games have no reason to be on consoles in the first place. The only reason a few have popped up on the 360 is because porting them is fairly easy.

    Yeah MS are so worried about Metal Gear "8\10" Solid, Little Big Planet and lets not forget HAZE, they are paying to have all cross platform games delayed on PS3. I suppose they also paid Sony to stop developing the Getaway as well...
  • BeersOfWar #45 4 years ago

    Fuck it.

    Tuesday:

    ""So we've put some initiatives in place to make sure we have more and more titles coming out on the PlayStation 3 from both first-party studios and third-party publishers" - Kaz Hirai

    Yesterday:

    "Sony scraps Eight Days and The Getaway"

    Today:

    “EA has halted work on its first PS3 real-time strategy game, Red Alert 3.”

    WHAT WILL TOMORROW BRING I WONDER?

  • Widge #46 4 years ago

    I just can't wait for Metal Gear! And actually dead keen on RFOM2 based on some of my questions getting answered yesterday!
  • Kenshin001 #47 4 years ago

    Forgive my ignorance, but is this an important game? Should I be upset this game is not coming out on the PS3? I mean I can understand if MGS4 were not coming out on the PS3 but I really don't know much about this game.
  • Darren #48 4 years ago

    Although I'd rather play an RTS on the PC, where games like Company of Heroes and C&C 3 remain my favourites, I thought LOTR: Battle for Middle-earth on the 360 wasn't too bad as far as the control scheme was concerned anyway; it did suffer from some awful framerate issues though which caused the game to slow down to a crawl for minutes on end until things smoothed out again. I did try the C&C 3 demo on the 360 too and that seemed fine too although the game paled alongside the superior PC version. Not everyone has the luxury of playing RTSs on a PC so I think it's good that they're coming out on the consoles, even if they're compromised somewhat.

    Until EA give a reason it's the implications that make it an important game, until then everyone assumes it's because the PS3 is rubbish as opposed to a simple roi type number thing.

    Its an important game if you like Command And Conquer games. As far as BIG console releases go this year, I would say the list reads Burnout, Devil May Cry 4, GTA4, MGS4, Gears 2 for anticipation levels.
  • seasidebaz #52 4 years ago

    @kenshin:

    no. it's not important. it's a game for beardy old men who have ambitions of being an army general. don't lose any sleep over it, it won't be worth it.

    @stepneg:

    tomorrow, ubisoft should scrap haze (and refund anyone who bought it)

  • Widge #53 4 years ago

    I'll probably get it on PC myself, on the list of "stuff to buy" it would really have to work it to get to the top... mainly because being a laptop bod, I can do games away from the house. Plus C&C on a laptop makes you feel all important like some sort of field commander.
  • Kenshin001 #54 4 years ago

    "Don't be sad, PS3 owners, because vampire rain is coming to PS3 this year, with some EXCLUSIVE content!!!"

    I heard the same thing is happening with Eternal Sonata and Bioshock too. So, yeah, you win some, you lose some I guess.
  • Darren #55 4 years ago

    Hmmm... BioShock, Vampire Rain and Eternal Sonata... it seem at times that the PS3 is desperately playing catch up with the 360 to make up for that lost year. That said, why on earth anyone thought PS3 owners would want to play Vampire Rain I do not know as the demo was beyond awful and I understand from the reviews that the full game isn't much better either. :?
  • MasterNameless #56 4 years ago

    Urgh, looks like you putting way too much emphasis on the score there... do you not have an opinion of your own? Whether you like the genres or not. At least take a couple of points off if you don't like em...

    @Kenshin001

    Oh dear... whoever you're quoting there, they were surely being sarcastic! Fair points on Eternal Sonata and Bioshock though.

  • ps3owner #62 4 years ago

    MGSIV is old already isn't it?
    Concept = old
    gameplay = old (10 years, no change)
    Snake = dying ... (old)

    PS3 = old. lol.

    ok, COD4 still works just fine on it. no problem then ;)
  • miiiguel #63 4 years ago

    La Noire seems to be out also.
  • MasterNameless #64 4 years ago

    @seasidebaz

    Fair enough, my apologies then, ammended scores noted!

    For me, that'd hopefully be Metal Gear 9/10, and Ninja Gaiden 9/10(I'd like it to be 10/10, but all the reviews said it isn't as good as the first game...)

    This is actually a little off-topic though! All the repetition on their own threads is way over the top, nevermind it spilling over to here too!

    Back on topic though, I don't think this will be a major loss for the PS3. It certainly makes sense not porting to such a different architecture. If I were Sony though, I'd think about giving them lots of cash to do it anyway as the number of games that are getting cancelled, being ported over badly - or simply staying Japan-only, in the case of Afrika - are beginning to pile up, and that can't be good for consumer confidence, especially here in europe...

    I still doubt Ninja Gaiden 2 getting a 7\10 is reason enough for MS to start paying for PS3 games to be "delayed".

  • penhalion #74 4 years ago

    How about the team working on PS3 made a hash of it and EA are simply choosing to divert the money to other projects as a result. Maybe they don't want to release a sub-standard port and would rather save some reputation points.

    Seriously people. There is a world economy slowdown happening and this simply means that priorities need to change, even in the games industry. Japanese sales have already begun to slow so it's only a matter of time before both amarican and european sales do the same.

    @penhalion:

    good reasoning. especially with ea wanting to rebrand themselves.

    if they can put the money towards something that will actually pique my interest, then fair play to them. c&c games have always been a niche market, and don't sell as well as a fifa or nfs, which is where the money will go.

    if ea can return the glory days of need for speed (i'm thinking 3do), coupled with the (frankly quite good) damage model of prostreet, they could reinvigorate the brand in a similar way to what they did with fifa 08, turn things around and produce something that is truly awesome.

  • makeamazing #87 4 years ago

    I'm not that fussed about this game coming out on the PS3... i have a PC and that is the best format for these types of games. Even though it probably is companies trying to tighten up development, and lets be honest the Xbox is a glorified PC, its a much easier port than spending lots of money on the PS3 version, that i cant see selling.

    Unfortunately it still doesnt make a good set of headlines for the PS3 this week. Hopefully things will start to improve and I think end of June/July will start to see an improvement in things coming for the platform.

    I really think Home will kick butt (its looking really nice) and slowly but surely people are getting to grips developing for the PS3. So I am hopefull that games will appear on both platforms at the same time. I still love my PS3 regardless of the odd stupid comment.
  • GamerG #88 4 years ago

    So what is inherently wrong with the PS3 because something clearly is?
  • makeamazing #89 4 years ago

    The problem with the PS3 is that its not a PC knock off... and im not trying to slate the Xbox, but that does make it quicker and easier to develop for.

    You will find that companies that are on the first title for the PS3 will struggle with it, those that have already developed will already have found the issues with it and know how to do things the right way. Once those other companies have got all their tools and libraries aimed at PS3 things will be alot easier. Unfortunately it will mean certain games will probably wont be ported to the PS3 when on the xbox its an easier sell (because its a modified PC).

    Anyway, Just got Grid, still got GTA to play more, Lego Indi is here... getting Mass Effect tomorrow, I really cant afford more games right now anyway :D
  • Nithron #90 4 years ago

    The silly thing about this is of course, is that it's the only console which supports mouse/keyboard controls.
  • Calgon #91 4 years ago

    Unfortunately it will mean certain games will probably wont be ported to the PS3 when on the xbox its an easier sell (because its a modified PC).

    Totally incorrect jbiber-jabber alert!!!... which console has basically a stripped down off the shelf GPU and which doesnt?

    Could you name me a part/processor in the 360 which is found in PC market? Nope? Didnt think so. Even the CPU is custom enough not even to be called an off the shelf MAC processor.

    Also the devs have had Sony's famous "super tools" for some time now and we have devs on their 3rd(or is it fourth?) generation PS3 titles already. But yeah them untapped potentials have Sonybots hook line and sinker.
  • Calgon #92 4 years ago

    As for this news... if it were an article aimed at the 360 instead; we know exactly what swam, apolol, madlax and headbog would be doing dont we?

    Personally Im not a obssessive sad bastard troll who's universe seemingly centres around how well my chosen platform does and how poorly the platform I hate(how can you hate a peice of electronics or those that enjoy certain ones that much? its unhealthy and creepy I tell ya!) does. So in closing it's probably just to expensive to keep the PS3 version at parity, in comparison to what theyd expect to make back from it.

  • dk_rare #95 4 years ago

    I predict that the game wont sell well based on the screenshots, that EA will blame it on piracy and that EA should instead just cancel it now to save us all a whole lot of trouble.

    As all the art assets and gameplay mechanics are uniform across the versions its a no brainer to port games around the machines, the problem with the PS3 in this game is that the CPU "the cell" can not handle the multiple AI required with all the units flying around in this game. The "SPU's" are not suitable for the task (because they lack branch prediction) and the main part of "the cell" the PPE isn't powerful enough to handle the AI in this game on its own (the 360 CPU is basically 3 PPE's).

    hahahaha.... is anything plain sailing on the PS3?

    @calgon:

    the "part" is directx ;) hehe

    edit: seriously, though, this is not a killer title. it's a niche product for a niche market. it may get decent reviews, but to be honest, i want ea to concentrate on fun again. boom blox is an amazing example of the things ea should be bringing out, it's simple, fun, and possibly one of the greatest games released this generation.

    Things are only going to get worse now Peter Moore is such a big part of EA.

    @ps3owner nice try but no I didnt even say anything that even approached that about CELL(it was specifically about the 360 CPU... sort of pre-empting a common response)... and a tip dont rely on Wiki too much for any debates.

    @Baz lol really thats not funny, someone might actually take you seriously there.( I take it you were joking but just incase remember > custom hardware/features, custom API/Directx ect. Plus that still didnt answer the original question, even if the above werent true because the question was along the lines of: Can the same core be found in the PC market?)

    ZERO games available in certain genres...even though the Playstation 3 has been available for 1.5 years!

    That is TERRIBLE!!!

    Playstation 3 has been available all this time and there are STILL absolutely ZERO games in the Real-Time Strategy genre available!!!

    Consider that third-party games like Command & Conquer 3, Battle for Midearth 2, Universe at War, and now Red Alert are released for PC and Xbox 360, but NOT for the Playstation 3!

    It is like that with genres such as Puzzle, Party, Platform, ect...too.

    And the games that are released on both the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 end up either "noticably" or "significantly" better on the Xbox 360 98% of the time according to statistics.

    Consider that Gamespot has an annual graphics comparison between the Xbox 360 and PS3 every year. For the THIRD year in a row 2006, 07, 08, the Xbox 360 has completely dominated the Playstation 3!

    For example, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 looks so much better on the Xbox 360 that it literally looks like you are comparing systems from different generations. Just compare the Dragon boss for a PERFECT example.

    Playstation 3 really ended up being a disappointment, because it is going to be two years old and still does not have any games for fans of certain genres to play...that is a disaster. The reason for this is because the PS3 has the LEAST amount of third-party support this generation. History has shown us that large amounts of third-part support is crucial.

    Maybe with the PS4 Sony will do better...but this generation the Xbox 360 has the biggest library with the highest rated games...the statistics prove that.
