WipEout returns to PSP News

PSP News by Tom Bramwell

27 March, 2007

Sony has announced that a new WipEout game for PSP will be released this September, courtesy of our old pals Studio Liverpool.

WipEout Pulse promises 24 new, reversible circuits to race around in new ships shooting people with new weapons while listening to new licensed music, including songs by Mason, Loco Dice and Stanton Warriors. God I feel old.

You'll be able to race against your friends in ad hoc and infrastructure (Internet!) modes, coating yourself in the liveries of eight new in-game racing teams, including one called EG-X. Good name.

More impressive, Sony reckons, will be in the introduction of a new track element called the "Mag-Strip" - this will lock ships to the surface of the track temporarily, allowing level designers to include things like loops, vertical drops and 90-degree angled sections to mess with your head.

Which, it turns out, they will be doing in seven game modes, with a Training section also introduced to show you everything from steering to shooting - something that's bound to come in handy for gamers more used to wheely racecars.

Finally, there'll be scope for personalisation and showing off, with the option to store your own music (MP3s) on a Memory Stick and listen along while you play, while a Photo Mode will allow you to take shots of your ship and post them online. Kids these days.

And, says Sony, the fun won't stop in September either, with downloadable content lined up for launch (why not put it on the disc then?) and afterwards, including new tracks, ships and tunes.

It's so exciting they emailed it to us eight times. Which, considering they were carrying these first screenshots on their backs, surely went above and beyond. Anyway, expect more soon, as we'll be sure to keep our finger on the, er, Pulse.

There NEEDS to be a PS3 version.

Also the next PSP version needs to not be ruined by poor track design, please. The last PSP version was an unwelcome step backwards from the awesomeness of Fusion.

Last year Sony mentioned that both PSP and PS3 versions of Wipeout was in the works... not an official announcement though.

Wipeout on PS3 with SIXAXIS controls is a no-brainer ;)

Seriously?

Fusion was by far the worst in the series and Pure was the 2nd best (after 2097) IMO ;)

A ps3 version is needed, but sticking pure or pulse on the PSM like tekken would be nice too...

Slightly off-topic, but has there been any hint of a Wii F-Zero game in the pipeline?

"Mag-Strip" - this will lock ships to the surface of the track temporarily

Uh-oh. That sounds suspiciously like it will be rubbish.

Still, Pure was amazing, so hopefully they'll pull it off!

Great news. The last Wipeout on PSP was a return to it's greater days. Lets hope this latest addition builds on that. Now a PS3 version with PSP connectivity with this game, please Sony. Pretty please???

F-Zero is undoubtedly better than wipeout, but i wish they would just forget about this and concentrate on the ps3 version, psp is a turd, ps3 wipeout interests me.

Fantastic, the best future racer ever returns. The promise of online play is what i am most looking forward to plus I'm sure there's a lot of people who would rather listen to heavy metal than electronic music, the fools, so the ability to use your own MP3s is a welcome addition.

Woohoo! I love Wipeout the best racer bar none, fast, futuristic, guns and great eye candy... can't wait!

Wipeout Pure was the best Wipeout yet, if they improve on that...

Re: PS3 if Sony release Wipeout for the PS3, I'm sold straight away. No cash? No problem, I'd pimp my arse on the street for a PS3 and a copy of Wipeout.

Bah! Wipeout 3 was clearly better than Pure - the handling and collsision response was so much more satisfying.
I wish they'd release real screenshots though - those have far too much anti-aliasing to be real PSP shots.

The correct order of awesomeness is:

Wipeout 2097
Wipeout
Wipeout Fusion
Wipeout Pure
Wipeout 64 even though it had a crash bug it's still better than the abomination that was. . .
Wipeout 3

Nonsense, Wipeout 3 was the best of the lot. Wipeout 2097 was great, but it didn't have analog steering since the Dual Shock 2 hadn't come out yet. (Unless you had a NegCon.)

My own personal ranking:

Wipeout > Wipeout 2097 (but only just!) > pure > (big gap) > fusion > (colossal gap) > F Zero

Fusion better than pure is just lunacy - the guns in fusion were totally over the top and took away from the racing, they'd just messed up the balance.

Guns over the top?? You've run mad! Since the beginning the point of racing in Wipeout is to blast your way clear of the pack then horde your Shields.

Pure was great in all respects other than the track design which just ruined it for me.

Edit: I'm not even answering anyone who claims 3 was anything other than wrong :P

Holy crap: - I was thinking the name was good! I came up with it!!! Check this link - this forum is visited by the makers of wipeout and we had a thread about naming the sequel to purE. My nick is yawnstretch on that forum:

You're all mental:-)

Wipeout 3:SE ---> Pure ---> Fusion ---> 2097 ---> Wipeout

2097 was too bloody hard, though Pure starts going in that direction pretty fast.

For the record:

wipEout purE > WipEout > wipEout 2097 > wip3out > F-Zero > WipEout Fusion

Now, where will Pulse fit?
