WipEout HD on track for "fall"

Trophy support reconfirmed.

Whether it was delayed because of a desire to add new features or an insurmountable technical problem, WipEout HD has been in development for 2097 years, so it's nice to see the PlayStation Blog's Daimion Pinnock reiterate that it's due out "this fall", which is autumn in real money.

Pinnock also repeats some of Sony's promises of this time last month, when we were told to expect "eight reverse tracks, four extra ships, two alternative HUDS, two-player offline split-screen and XMB Trophy support".

"More to come on Trophies soon, don't you worry," writes Pinnock. "We'll be back with more on WipEout HD in the coming weeks, including the details on trophies, price, and release date - see keep your eyes peeled for more here on the PS Blog!" he concludes.

Not much more than we knew already, then, but it's nice to know that Sony still intends to release the game this year, and hopefully sooner rather than later. Check out our rapidly-ageing WipEout HD PS3 hands-on preview from a few months back to find out why this slice of 1080p, 60fps racing is worth keeping a light on for.

Well, the delays will be worth it if this is as sweet as I imagine it to be. I loved Wip3out, and this is one of a number of excellent looking titles which nudge me that bit closer to buying a PS3 (when I finally have the money).

It just looks so generico-hi res wipeout. But I guess that is what will sell and they don't have to try anything new/exciting/original...ohh trophies!
  • SeesThroughAll #3 4 years ago

"Generico" Wipeout is exactly what we want, thankyouverymuch.

Now go on back to Halo and Gears.
  • lambtron #4 4 years ago

    Heh.

I read that title as WipEout HD on track for fail.
  • SeesThroughAll #5 4 years ago

    lol

The "we're having problems" "oh no! we're not!" thing sounded bad indeed.

This is the sole reason I bought my ps3, that and playtv (even it is now hopelessly crippled). Please god let it be out soon, my black box is little more than a fancy dvd player at the moment.

tjlazr - exactly the same reason as me mate. I bought it back in june, and while warhawk is quite good fun, the 360 and PC (esp. with new TF2 update) are seeing more use. It is just a player at the moment really...but not for long!
  • Beek4257 #8 4 years ago

Not the reason I bought mine (that would MGS4 and Blu Ray), but it should have been. Here's hoping it will be "generico"-Wipeout-awesome.

As a PSP owner and Wipeout lover, I bought Pure and Pulse for the PSP. I still hold-up that 2097 was the pinnacle of the series.

And from what I've heard Wipeout HD is a hi-res version of Pulse

Although Pulse was very good it does get a bit stale and even boring after a while. Maybe the online element will make this game special maybe too I'm old and jaded .

What i did enjoy about Fusion what the career aspect which at least added the human factor. Wipeout is need of a next-gen rethink as some of the ideas are over 15 years old now
  • Beek4257 #10 4 years ago

I like innovation as much as anyone, but in this case I'd settle for a HD makeover of 2097. Didn't care much for the tracks in Fusion.
  • johnnybrn #11 4 years ago

No but Wipeout hasn't changed significantly since its inception, which may or may not be a bad thing.

I have bought every Wipeout game for the Playstation (Wipeout, 2097, 3, Fusion, Pure and Pulse)

    I love the series

I just feel that putting a HD coat on the same old game is no longer good enough for me, maybe I'm asking to much but other games have evolved i.e Burnout why can't Wipeout?.
  • Beek4257 #12 4 years ago

    @johnnybrn

Any ideas on what innovations you would like to see?
  • paulf #13 4 years ago

@ lambtron - i read it that way too - spending far too much time at <a href = "http://failblog.org/"&g t;failblog</a> me thinks
  • johnnybrn #14 4 years ago

He he, how about a open-world play like Burnout paradise, that would be a laugh.

No but seriously how about modifications that they touched on in Fusion, and I dont just mean custom paint jobs. I think being able to go under the hood and modify the vehicle does add a subtle amount of depth to any racing game. Of course this is at the discretion of the player.

Sometimes Wipeout leaves me feeling a bit cold as its so sterile. More human interaction, career progression and even a story would help. I've always wanted something radical like going to new planets or even if there was a war and there were factions... (erm, maybe I'm spent to much time thinking about this kind of thing but as its future setting there are endless possiblities)
  • Beek4257 #15 4 years ago

    @johnnybrn

Hmm... I like your idea of modifying "under the hood". Then your faction preference could be storybased instead of choosing a team based on their general ship specifications.
  • johnnybrn #16 4 years ago

    Beek4257,

Exactly maybe I'm expecting too much but I would love a bit of variation in one of my favourite games.

I know I'm a bit daft as you can tell from my previous posts but I feel that Fusion introduced new elements like modifications and story elements that werent fully realised and because the game itself wasnt that that great, these were hastily dumped in subsequent versions. Which is a shame because I really enjoyed these aspects. Fingers crossed for Wipeout HD.

Anyway i would also love for there to be Rollcage HD
  • Beek4257 #17 4 years ago

Rollcage online multiplayer should definitely be a laugh:
"Am I upside down? Where am I going?!".

Needless to say I sucked at it, but still liked it a lot.

    +1

This could be one of the first titles where the SixAxis could be the ideal control method. That alone could make it a totally new experience.

I have high hopes about this one.
  • Feanor #20 4 years ago

I own both PSP Wipeouts, but the limitations of the PSP's screen and controls has me relly exicted about an HD Wipeout controlled with the left analog stick.

And let's not forget T3h SIXAXIS!

I'm wiling to put time into learning to play with the tilt sensor for this one.

Actually, I very much agree with comments regarding more human interaction and content in Wipeout games. That's one of the few things I really liked about Fusion. The pilots had personalities, and there was an inkling of a plot and a game universe in which one competed. I also liked upgrading the ship.

Of course, Pulse introduced the skin editor which was simply brilliant. Let's hope they've included that in HD along with support for custom sountracks and uploading screenshots (and maybe even videos? - one can dream)

The delay of this title bugs me, but I'm sure it's for good reasons. The game already looks awesome, and the Leipzig trailer showed the split screen mode which is very welcome. I just hope the split screen doesn't exclude all the CPU opponents. Racing one-on-one isn't all that exciting.

Also looking forward to the Trophies on this one (I think I'd actually be able to achieve some!) and the online mode, of course.
    I can't wait.
