Got to agree with you, peterfll. Surely a game that ran on the PSP can run with v-sync on (i.e. NO screen tearing) on the more powerful PS3 and still manage 60 fps most of the time? It's kind of disappointing when racing games suffer from tearing... I'd rather have a 720p game at 60 fps if tearing is the price we have to pay to have it running at 1080p.

Hold on. How do you access the GTA soundtrack? Is this a separate CD (or Amazon dowmload), or can you access the GTA choons on the game disk? Was great how the original Wipeout 2097 game disk could also be used as a vanilla CD to listen to the tunes. Don't tell me this is possible in GTA4?

I dont see why devs even bother trying for 1080p, there is a very small percentage of 1080p capable TV's out there, and 720p looks just as good and 60fps is actually achievable.

Frame rates win every single time, just ask mr. CoD4...

ignorance is bliss, i did nt even know what screen tearing was until i came to eurogamer, and the only game i though it actually became a spoiler in was heavenly sword, people, you need to stop being so obsessive and just bloody enjoy the games!

A game like Wipeout needs to be 60 FPS with no tearing. If that means it has to be uglier and at a lower resolution so be it.

What load of anal graphics whores. I would rather devs aimed for ambition than play it safe and under achieve on progress. It is a PSP game so why not aim for the boxes so fews devs consider when delivering last gen content with current gen pretensions. I hope they can fix the problems, but as someone else pointed out here (though I wouldn't agree with his 15 frames assertion) small blemishes don't ruin quality... And Wipeout on PSP is is quality. Can't wait for this. If the price is right, day one purchase.

I'd rather have a game that runs at 640p with 2X AA, like CoD 4, if it means having a smooth tear-free 60 fps framerate but that's me I guess. There seems to be a tendency with developers to run before they can even walk and this generation should be about getting games running well at 720p with decent AA. 1080p games can come with the next generation when the hardware is actually powerful enough and has enough memory to handle stuff at that resolution. I get the impression at times that Sony's push for 1080p games is simply to get one over on Microsoft so they can boast their console is better than the 360 because it has more native 1080p games and for no other reason.

When 60fps/1080p has been an active part part of your hype for so long its no wonder they get called out now and again.

My telly is only 720p (1080i) so I won't be running at full HD any way.

@ djronz: Screen tearing stops you from enjoying the game. It's such a noticeable effect that any willing suspension of disbelief goes out the window every time you see it. Drakes Fortune was great but never really looked finished thanks to horrendous v-sync tearing.

Hey Natattack, why don't you get a pre-paid credit card like I did. It works fine. Bit concerned more about the over familiarity then graphical issues. I don't seem to notice half of what everyone goes on about.

And end up with something that looks great in stills but actually looks pug fugly when being played? That's what happened with GT5p and it's just so jarring and offputting. You might be able to get away with that in a slower paced game but not racing. It ruins any sense of immersion.

kopykatt, have to agree with the over familiarity issue. Hopefully DLC will rectify that. Like I said, if that price is right...

farticusmaximus, It's a personnal preferance clearly. Unless it's highly noticable, the majority of the games buying public wouldn't give a damn. Judging by the preview it isn't.

dream, It's a good point. Never managed to complete any of the previous games I played. I still go back because while you're on the ride it's pretty exhilarating!

urgh.. This better be £10 for 8 tracks, fed up of this 'charge them more overall' strategy that is emerging. Mario kart wii has 32 tracks and is about £35, so thats nearly a quid a track. Bet they charge £20 and then £6.99 for every 2-3 tracks.with the final charge for the full game being about £80.

GTA is an open world game with plenty of other graphical glitches which I'm prepared to forgive given the scale of the game and what it is trying to achieve.

Wipeout is an arcade racer and the scale of the game is VASTLY different (both in terms of the size of the world and what you can do in it). Arcade racers should be silky smooth and glitch free (as I said if this means lower res and less pretty so be it).

lambtron, Maybe I'm being fractious, but in my experience "arcade racers" and "less pretty" don't go hand in hand. As far as I can see, Wipeout HD is indeed an arcade racer which has gone for the as pretty as possible box, which, minus minor framerate and tearing issues in the preview build, it delivers in spades. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder...

@Rash: You can't judge the 60fps smoothness from a 30fps video.

Sorry (well, actually I'm not) but I'd much rather a drop in resolution if it meant getting rid of screen tearing. It seriously affected my enjoyment of Uncharted. I don;t look for it, it's like a vast bowl of puss (thankyou Monty Python) that you can't miss.

It is possible, I remember finishing 2097 on Phantom. You need to know the tracks like the back of your hand, and start getting a bit nauseous after longer sessions, but it is possible. /flex

Hmm watched the videos and I wasn't impressed with the frame rate. The game kept freezing for a few seconds while it was "buffering". I hope they sort that out! :P

Tearing and stuttering really annoy me as well, there's no point in having such high detail graphics if you can't make them move smoothly.

The music is as great as ever and Zone mode looks fantastic. Can't wait! Please be reasonably priced.

I've finished all of the WipEout series, so it is possible as I'm not the greatest player of games ever. It just takes a bit of memory, work and hours of practice. It also helps that WipEout is awesome :p

Wipeout HD gives me the full on chub.

I got a PSP 2 weeks ago and pulse is an absolutely amazing game.

It's very simple. Games like GT5p and Wipeout try to throw too much geometry/particle effects/shaders around and end up with something that looks nice when viewed as a screenshot, but when the game is actually in motion it looks shite because of the stuttering and tearing.

I was prepared to be humbled by GT5p's visuals, but on playing it was hugely dissapointed. It looks about the same as Forza, with slightly better lighting. It does not play anywhere near as well as forza though. When scenery and vehicles move at the pace that a racing game do, tearing and frame stuttering completely ruin the experience.

I'd imagine a game like wipeout, which moves considerably faster than GT, would suffer from uneven framerates and tearing to an even greater degree.
