WipEout HD freezing bug patched News

PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

13 October, 2008

Sony has issued a patch for WipEout HD that stops the game freezing for players connected to PlayStation Network with more than 50 friends on their list.

However, to get the benefits from the automatic update, version 1.10, it's necessary to delete your save game file and create a new profile.

That's bad news if you had been playing the game offline to avoid the effects of the problem, or if you had temporarily deleted some friends (our solution: permanently delete your friends - and in the game).

At least, however, doing so will not affect the Trophies you have unlocked and any online records, if you have them. It's just campaign progress you lose. Just.

Sony announced this apologetically, for obvious reasons.

WipEout HD is certainly good enough to survive the stigma of a game-freezing bug, but it is a shame that the beautiful, GBP 11.99 racer has been so beset by problems.

Prior to release, the game was delayed considerably due to a big setback during a routine epilepsy screening procedure - something Sony said it was honour-bound to take "very seriously".

I think I read somewhere that somebody got around this by copying their save to an external drive, deleting it from the PS3, downloading the patch and then starting a new game, then deleting that save, and then copying their old save back on. I wasn't paying a lot of attention to what other people said about it, but maybe that works... Or maybe it doesn't. Whatever. I'm not popular enough to have 50 PSN friends so it makes no nevermind to me.

Wipeout HD is fantastic - been playing it like mad for the last two weeks and the online mode is fun (but slighly flawed). Best money I have ever spent on a XBLA/PSN downloadable game :)

Most people don't need to delete their save at all, I didn't and it's working perfectly now (and I was affected by the freezing issue previously). Apparently only a small number of people will continue to suffer game freezing after the patch and need to delete their save.

You have to delete your save only if you had freezing with more than 50 friends on your list before patch (and after), if you didn't than everything will work nice and dandy.

Does anyone else have an oddity (not really a problem as such) with the game apparently freezing during the loading screen - the dark background with circular logo on it - before it resumes after ten seconds or so with the WipEout craft whoosing out of the logo and then going onto to display the rest of the credit screens (Studio Liverpool, etc.)? Is this normal? I've never had the game crash though... it's just that this "pause" is rather disconcerting... :?

Glad I only have one friend online. Spent over an hour trying to get a single gold medal. NO WAY WAS THAT GOING TO WASTE!

First time I heard about a freezing issue was when the patch appeared. Been perfect for me.

Always worth waiting for the early adopters/unpaid beta testers to find these things.

I just completed 3 races and couldn't give a toss about deleting my save file.

The main problems on the records section leaderboards seem to have gone away too - I can actually see my friend's times now. The tables were very slow when I tried it last though.

Darren - I get a slight pause at the Studio Liverpool intro - only a second or two - I think it's some sort of net access - probably checking for game updates. Wouldn't worry about it.

Damn - was hoping they'd tweak the difficulty down. I'm an old WO hand, but I'm getting my arse handed to me by event 4/8. Time trials targets are insane unless there's some shortcut nonsense I'm missing. The only flaw in an otherwise honker of a game.

It's bloody typical that the PS3's killer app both isn't on Blu-Ray, and has flawed online functionality.

Finished all 8 campaigns now but getting gold on all of them is damn tricky to say the least.

He is waiting for the studio liverpool logo at start to be unpaused and get into the game proper!-D

Aye its disappointing especially if you had unlocked quite a few trophies but need to start again the campaign and thus back on the bottom of the rung (but trophies still there).

Still better that Sony has sorted the problem out and let us enjoy the game better!
