Wii version of Pikmin 2 dated News

Wii News by Tom Bramwell

12 March, 2009

Nintendo has announced that the New Play Control version of Pikmin 2 will be released across Europe on 24th April.

The reworked Donkey Kong Jungle Beat will then follow in the summer.

Pikmin 2 could be the series' early high point, as Captain Olimar is joined by assistant Louie, new species of Pikmin, and multiplayer modes in a reworking of Shigeru Miyamoto's inventive strategy puzzle game.

Apart from refined controls, New Play Control additions include the Piklopedia (listing all the plants and creatures you encounter) and a new Treasure Hoard (listing all your loot). As with the GameCube original, there are 201 treasures to find.

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat was a Cube platform game originally controlled using the Donkey Konga bongos, but now uses the motion-sensing Wiimote and nunchuk for attacks, soundwaves and movement.

The Wii version also introduces two brand new stages, new enemies (such as the Thumpskull and Buzzball), new bonuses and new weapons. New new new! Jungle Beat is already out in Japan, and will release in the States this May, so hopefully we'll see it sooner rather than later.

So far, Nintendo has released two New Play Control games in Europe, revamping the first Pikmin so well that the only thing to say against it was that Pikmin 2 is a superior game.

Mario Power Tennis proved slightly less awesome, but wasn't without its charm either.

Nintendo plans to keep up the releases too, with Metroid Prime, Metroid Prime 2 and Chibi-Robo! on the slate, and others no doubt in consideration. Bring back Luigi's Mansion!

Wow, New Play Control = uber-cheap way to make lots of money from rehashing old games with Wiimote controls crowbarred in, whether they benefit from them or not.

@Coin-Op - Indeed they do. :(

I can't see Jungle Beat being the same without the bongos. Playing with those made it feel like you'd actually just been in a fist fight. Without the impact it's going to feel somewhat hollow.

I've played them before so won't be bothering.

I want dates for Punch-Out and Excitebots (which looks godly IMO).

Worst of all a couple of years ago you could get a whole new GC, with Donky Konga and bongos in a pack-in box for £30 and an additional set of bongos new with Jungle Beat for £15.

First Pikmin didn't really seem worth it just for wiimote support, but I'll surely get this. Probably be cheaper than buying a second hand gamecube copy.

Shame they couldn't add in more battle modes for Pikmin2. Battle was an excellent 2P game.

I have Pikmin, it's nice and short with some additional challenge modes. I really don't see the need for a sequel so I'll pass. Why in the name of god anyone wants a 3rd one is quite beyond me. What more would you expect, more coloured Pikmin?

I'm curious about what they're going to do about the GBA connection in the first Metroid Prime. They'd probably remove the original Metroid just to force people to buy it on Virtual Console, not sure about the Fusion suit. Shame if they do go and remove content though.

Not really that bothered though. I still own the Game Cube version, the only release so far that interests me is Chibi Robo.

Is it just me or is Nintendo's arrogance off the chart. Wheeling out admittedly good Gamecube titles with stuck on motion control to make up for the vast ammounts of bland kiddieware and edutainment.

Come on, where's Pikmin 3? When the HD Wii comes out, ( or Wiii, note the 3 I's, or whatever it's called ), will they re-release Pikmin 1 & 2 and the like again? Talk about flogging the same old horse! I can't see what the Wii-mote give's to Pikmin anyhow. Why not call it Pikmin - Widescreen special edition instead? :)

"with waggle. " "stuck on motion control"

But they work well with the two pikmins and should work well with the two MPs.

The Piklopedia and Treasure Hoard aren't new additions to the New Play Control version, as they were in the GameCube game.

Jungle Beat is an underrated gem, but I just don't think it'd be the same without the conga controllers.

Agree Jungle Beat will miss the point without the bongos.

Despite owning a Cube (and mostly regretting it), I'd welcome a Pikmin 2 update on Wii as I never purchased either title on their original format.

Oh, and +1 for Luigi's Mansion remake. Though I wouldn't buy it myself, it would give an oppotunity to play a massively underrated gem to those masses who never owned a GC. Actually think LM was probably my favourite GC title (along with RE4, naturally).

In fairness, Jungle Beat's had the most significant reworking of the New Play Control range. It's not quite the same without bongo controls, but as enemy positions and level designs have changed (and there's proper, actual new content, too *gasp*) it's still a great (and gorgeous) little platformer.
