Here's another idea: for those of us lazy ones they could make a sledding game! You just sit and lean:) They could also incorporate wii-motes for, I dunno what, smacking stuff while sledding down! Oh, the possibilities..

How do you sell an add-on at a hugely inflated price?

Simple, change it to a bit of fitness equipment, that isn't really fitness equipment.

Genius move (again) by Nintendo.

Almost nobody would have bought it for the hover/skate/snow/surf board game.

To the people saying this isn't excercise;

Surely it's better for you to jump up an down on a scale for 30mins than to sit there motionless in your underpants, eating pork-scratchings whilst playing pro evo? Or am I missing the point?

Thanks for the biology lesson. I will adapt my fitness regime accordingly.

Only next time try not to be so smug about it.

My point was that Wii fit will not make you fit, or loose weight.

People who call other people ugly are insecure about their own looks, same as people who keep calling everything gay, they are just battling with their own homosexuality.

Most people who join the army are actually homosexual, but they can't accept it so need to vent there anger by killing other people. That's a well known fact that has been documented.

Oh yeah Wiifit, sorry went off topic there.

"My point was that Wii fit will not make you fit, or loose weight."

Actually there's a good chance that it will. The first 3 months of body building don't actually result in any muscle mass gains, simply because you are incapable of coordinating your body well enough to work the muscles hard enough.

Instead, the rapid strength gains you experience at the start of adopting a weight training program are the result of increased neuro-muscular coordination. The same kinds of neuro-muscular coordination that the Wii Fitness uses.

The initial weight loss you experience as a part of training is partly the result of 're-activating' under-used muscle groups, and using them more, which results in a higher metabolic rate. For instance, many people find it really hard to activate their rhomboids (muscle group in the middle of the back) without being conscious of them. Once they've done a few weeks worth of back training, these muscles can be activated more easily and correctly used.

I think you'll find that these initial gains will also be present for people who use the Wii Fitness.

While you might be right, what you're suggesting is somewhat extreme and not viable for the vast majority of people.

Most men put weight on their gut first. Hence people who are otherwise thin who have a beergut. For losing weight from this particular area with minimum impact gentle sustained exercise is absolutely the best option.

And about this Wiifit stuff, I lift weights five times a week, not to get big, just to keep the weight off and look super sexy, if you want to keep fit, exercise and don't eat a load of crap, it's not rocket science.

Wiifit is just playing on people's fears, that's why it will sell. As a exercise product it's a load of bollocks probably. I expect Nintendo's next game to be some sort of pregnancy test that involves placing the Wiimote in your beaver. Nintendo are just exploiting people with all this brain and fitness stuff.

Although it might inspire people to take a healthier attitude in other aspects of their life (i.e not just in front of the telly) - Especially if the board (as it appears in one screenshot) plots your body-mass index with time.......?

Thing is, I got to the gym most nights now, when I get home I generally have dinner and then get stuck in to some decent games.

I'm not going to want to go to the gym, have dinner, and then play THIS. And it's not a suitable alternative to the gym either. So for gym-goers I don't see the point, and for people who don't go to the gym and want to lose weight, this is going to be pretty useless for them anyway.

It'll still sell millions, like that other pointless game, Nintendogs.

No doubt the sheeple will buy this in their millions. Alhtough the sales figures should be compared to all those other cheap, useless ab rollers and thigh trimmers and bun toners which are sold on dodgy tv shopping channels.

Proper nutrition, regular excercise and supplementation is the only way to lose weight.

Pal, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. There is no such thing as spot reduction. Hence the popularity of lipo suction, the only way to spot reduce. A calorie controlled diet and strict cardio and resistance training regimen will remove fat gradually from all over your body.

And if we're going to have a wildly off-topic discussion about diet and exercise, I'd usually recommend that someone starting a resistance based program actually increase the number of meals they eat...

But that's neither here nor there...

@lambtron: You can usually increase your lean muscle mass about 1 kg per year, so agreed that it requires a lot of dedication. I disagree with you that it shouldn't be a realistic target. I think a year of regular of regular resistance training (3 times per week) is a realistic target for most people to be able to achieve. Of course, once they get on 'the path', they're unlikely to want to stop after a year. If the Wii Fitness gets them 3 months into it, then more power to Nintendo.

Btw: While I'm all for weight training, if you think us as a games community is a sad and pathetic community, try meeting some of the hard core gym junkies out there. High prevalence of depression, teenage acne, social misadjustment, anger issues, short-man syndrome etc that makes gamers look like paragons of the community.

"Can't wait for more uninformed people to speak up on this subject. "

So that you will presented with another fantastic opportunity to be superior? Grow up.

"[Edit to fix grammar that made me seem less smart...]"

Lol. Irony.

"Actually there's a good chance that it will. The first 3 months of body building don't actually result in any muscle mass gains, simply because you are incapable of coordinating your body well enough to work the muscles hard enough."

Really? My personal experience suggests otherwise, but I'm always open to learning. When I started training again my body weight increased by about 8 pounds within three months. Now I assumed that was muscle mass, because if anything my body fat reduced (actually, it probably didn't change much, but rather became less apparent). The weight that I could lift certainly increased over a three month period, and I assume that increased circulation or whatever isn't responsible for a significant increase such as that. Is the fact that I was returning to training rather than starting from nothing perhaps a factor here?

This is actually a proper question, as you seem to know a fair amount about the subject (still no excuse for being childishly big headed about it mind).

Edit: Ah, read on in your post regards muscle strength increases. Fair enough. I'm still not clear on where the weight gain came from though. Did I simply imagine that it occurred over a shorter period of time than was the case perhaps?
