I think I half answered your question later. As I mentioned, you can usually increase your lean muscle mass about 1 kg per year, so the weight gained you experienced is unlikely to be solely muscle gain. All of the stuff I've said is pretty much rule of thumb though, and there are always exceptions. However, I suspect you'll find you were eating more calories, which usually converts to fat if you're not using them, plus you'll probably have increased the amount of glycogen (carbohydrate) and water your body was storing in order to help it with the additional exercise you were doing.

Its quite a common training strategy to mass up and then go lean, then mass up again then go lean etc.

Ahh bodybuilder types and professional sports/nutritionalists.

Somewhere between learning a bit of science for some mickeymouse course and being in the gym a lot themselves they completely lose track of reality.

Diet, fitness, training and so on are all very individual things. Generally the best advise you can ever give out (over the internet at least) is "Eat right, work out". Other than that, the answer is to stick with whatever works for you.

People who come on internet forums and spout science to try and tell people what will work for them to lose/gain weight or get fitter don't really cut much ice with me I'm afraid.

No offence though.

For some, this game will make them fitter, for others not so much, for others, not at all (as it's left gathering dust in a draw with the rest of their Wii kit).

So in essence you are saying my arse got bigger, but the baggier tracksuit bottoms hid the difference. Nuts.

Hmmm, I get the feeling that you yourself haven't studied physical development in any way at all. The way you describe "some mickey mouse course" suggests your standpoint is based more on tabloid style bias than actual knowledge. Fortunately the clear absence of actual knowledge means it is unlikely anyone will actually be offended by your post.

I wasn't very excited by this until someone pointed out to me the possibilities of this in conjunction with the wiimote and nunchuk. Imagine road rash steering with your weight whilst beating people sensless using the wiimote or a proper boxing sim, this will be huge.

It's based on the fact I have a masters of engineering degree really.

And you may note the way I said "no offence".

The basic arc of my point is that anyone telling people how it is best to lose weight over the internet and then feeling smug about it is absolutely nuts. Everyone has different goals, body types, metabolisms etc. that there is no hard and fast rules except the ones I previoulsy stated.

Feel free to disregard my post (as you say you should), but the fact that you not only replied to it, but quoted its contents implies that the opposite was in fact the case.

"Wanna lose weight? - Do body building or sprinting!" - yeah, sure.

Practical advise rather than sanctimonious, smug "I have done a course" knowledge would have done, but whatever floats your boat. I'm sure the first thing you would say to a 50 year-old woman, who is 60lb overweight and has bad hips would be:

"The amount of calories burnt during exercise is dwarfed by your body's post exercise consumption of calories (EPOC). This is elevated more by intense exercise, and even more by modifying your body's metabolic rate by increasing your lean muscle mass. Increasing your lean muscule mass by 1 kg is approximately equal to doing an additional 30 minutes cardiovascular exercise every day for free. So body building ~= sprinting > jogging > gentle walking for weight loss. Of course, jogging is still good for cardio vascular (aerobic) fitness. There's also the additional benefits of skeletal insulin uptake that occurs with intense exercise.

By the way, this is what Arnie would tell the 50 year old woman - in his own words

"The greatest feeling you can get in a gym or the most satisfying feeling you can get in the gym is the pump. Let's say you train your biceps, blood is rushing in to your muscles and that's what we call the pump. Your muscles get a really tight feeling like your skin is going to explode any minute and its really tight and its like someone is blowing air into your muscle and it just blows up and it feels different, it feels fantastic. It's as satifying to me as cumming is, you know, as in having sex with a woman and cumming. So can you believe how much I am in heaven? I am like getting the feeling of cumming in the gym, I'm getting the feeling of cumming at home, I'm getting the feeling of cumming backstage, when I pump up, when I pose out in front of 5000 people I get the same feeling, so I am cumming day and night. Its terrific, right? So I am in heaven."

"It's based on the fact I have a masters of engineering degree really"

How can you in a single sentence decide that your masters degree makes you more informed than a professional nutritionist? Can you even name the training and resulting qualifications that exist in the physical education career path?

I've studied engineering as it happens. Not right through degree level (I started a mechanical engineering degree, but then quit to do something else) but I studied physics and maths to A level standard. I must have missed the bit where we covered biology too ;)

And writing "no offense" after being offensive (patronising in this case) is hardly some leveller. "No offense, but" are often exactly the words that preceded an offensive statement.

Anway, I thinik we are splitting hairs a bit here. I don't see that what you have written since actually disagrees with a.d.venturer. Both of you seem to have slightly difference versions of the old "calories in - minus calories out = get fat or get thin" statement (I really just thought it was that straight forward, seems not).

You just seem to dismiss him based on his tone (which I did myself initially, but he's chilled out now). You also accuse him of being high brow ("I'm sure the first thing you would say to a 50 year-old woman" etc), but you yourself dismissed him without any fact, and then responded to further prompting by telling me about your degree. Cut of the same "superior" stone you two are. Maybe thats why you aren't getting on.

I think the qualification JayPee might be refering to is Sport Science.

And I've always thought it was a bit micky mouse too to be honest.

But in the same breath I would also agree that my degree in English and Masters in I.T. are a bit Micky Mouse also.

But then again I don't claim to have vastly superior knowledge to the rest of the forum as a.d.venturer did earlier.

Sounds like a game to me.

EDIT: And it always entertains me no end that gamers who do the digital equivilant of running around playing soldiers or playing with toy cars slag off games that might be, y'know, fun. GYAC - Games are childish things no matter what genre you play.

I don't really care whether it will lose me weight because I am 10 stones but this will be great fun anyway.

Think about all the possibilities.

Tiger Woods 2009 - Optional balance board option which takes into account the position of your feet in taking your shot.

Tony Hawks - Use the Wiimote to balance with your hands whilst your feet balance on the board. Move your balance to turn etc. AMAZING THIS WOULD BE!

FPSs - Use the balance board to peek round corners and to duck.

This could lead to some amazing experiences. But the hardcore 13 year old 360 gamer will dismiss it all as shit, condemn Nintendo for not being a games company, and continue shouting shit on Live. Each to their own.

Oh who gives a SHIT if it is a game or not. This is about the oldest AND the most pointless argument, and it always comes up whenever someone develops something a little bit imaginative.

"Its not a game" is actually levelled as some kind of critisism! I might as well compain about a trifle because its not a cake. Its still a nice tasty trifle, wtf is your problem? If you don't like trifle because of the cherries or if you don't enjoy playing Wii Fit because its repetative, then fair enough, but don't try and dismiss it on some utterly pointless "ballet is not tennis, ergo its shit" type bullshit.

If there is one thing that will annoy me more than a pointless critisism, its an often repeated pointless critisism. Next thing you know someone will say "this is euroGAMER, and this isn't a game, so why is it on the site?" at which point I will hire killers and send them to the writers house with instructions to make it last.

I'm sure this will appeal to a big group, and once again I have to congratulate the big N on trying something original, but personally it all looks a bit shitty to me, and is something I'll never use. I mean, playing Wii fooking bowling for 10 minutes sprained my back, and had me bed ridden for weeks, this would literally kill me.

ah a 360 fangirl is a bad thing.. the definition of one : is anyone who doesnt own a wii, and owns a 360 - but is a little insecure about their purchase after seeing how well the wii is doing. And subsequently feels the need to post in every single thread about a wii game/peripheral telling us how crap the wii is.

Thus whenever an article like this appears, hundreds of 360 fangirls come crawling out of the woodwork.

Another good sign of a fangirl is one who, upon being told he is a fangirl by someone who owns a wii suddenly gets all defensive and says that person is a "nintendo appolgist" and that person is one of the worst trolls on the board - totally oblivious to the fact the person was responding to the 360 fangirls trolling in the first place.

As for this peripheral.. cant see the point.. console add-ons rarely work well.. if it had come with the wii.. maybe.. but cant see it working myself.
