Wii browser update in the pipeline News

Wii News by Dan Pearson

12 November, 2008

Nintendo is said to be readying an update for the Wii's Opera browser, set for release in December.

As reported by GoNintendo and Gamereactor, the update is expected to include a number of new things to play around with and generally make your browsing easier. There'll be new buttons, although what functions these may actually perform remains moot. Word is you can expect a six-sided 'tabcube' allowing six different pages to be kept handy, in-browser Wii mail visibility and compatibility with Wii Speak - the communication toy bundled with Animal Crossing.

The price for the browser will remain a weighty 500 Nintendo points, although the update will be entirely free for people who already own the older version.

Nintendo was unavailable for comment at the time of writing, but worryingly the latest update we could find on the official Nintendo site was full of enthusiasm for how the Wii enables "easy, one-handed casual browsing". By which, of course, we are attempting to pass off a loose reference to onanism as investigative journalism. We thank you.

Like the sound of the tabbed "cuded" browsing and it about time!

Hopefully there's a Flash update, that's all I care about.

Has the [paid for | have] the old version thing been clarified anywhere? Most other sites reporting this have said the update is free if you paid for the previous version, which could be interpreted as excluding those who got it for free.

Are there any cubes that don't have six sides?...

Does anyone use console browsers ever!? Let alone on the wii! I get halfway through typing 'facebook' before i get bored of inputting anything through a controller and give up!

Hope Flash gets upgraded to Flash 9 too but the Wii hasn't got that much memory to play with in the first place. With tabbed browsing there's going to be even more competing for internal resources.

I want a "find in page" search function. I mostly used the browser for searching a walkthrough on gamefaqs.com but it's too much of a hassle scrolling through a 60 page document finding the right bit.

I was looking at other forum threads about this - I'm sorry Eurogamer. It's not you; it's me - and there was quite a lot of talk about how Adobe really can't be bothered to invest in helping Nintendo to upgrade the flash version.

Which is a shame as that's pretty much the only thing I want from the Wii browser.

All I want is a Flash update. From the Above post.... meh, I guess I agree with that. It's not like an iPhone or anything.

I was hoping that EG could link to the article on GameReactor, but they can't either.

All roads mysteriously lead to GoNintendo and then stop.

And the screen shot is a mock up.

@ Shotgun: when my PC died, being able to browse on the PS3 meant I could find out how to fix it.
