Wii: 12 Games of Christmas Article

Zack & Wiki: Quest for Barbaros' Treasure

  • Release date: 7th December (TBC)
  • Gamepage

Rumblings suggest this might actually slip to 2008, but we're going to stick it on here anyway in hope of affecting the coal-like hearts of whichever accursed humans might be conspiring to hold it up. We like adventure games - we make no secret of that, except when we're hiding from the people from the recruit agency downstairs - and the critical acclaim heaped on Capcom's latest left-field effort in the US, where it's already out, suggests we're in for the sort of treat we usually only get on our birthday (yes, Toblerone).

Compared to Gregory Horror Show and Phoenix Wright by our name-dropping editor in terms of its "quirky spirit of adventure", it sounds like an adventure game where your Wiimote is the physical embodiment of the props your character relies on to solve puzzles. Pick up a bell and you can ring it by shaking the remote. USE monkey WITH wrench this ain't. Although there is a monkey in it. Come on Nintendo! Give it to us this year!

Speaking of monkeys: I bought the DVD of Congo the other day for a fiver. I had seen it ages ago and liked it but couldn't find it on the, er, at my video shop. Well, it has killer monkeys, Bruce Campbell, a parachuting gorilla who can talk and paint and Joe Pantoliano wearing Hawaiian shirts. So I was right.

Rockstar Games presents: Table Tennis

'Wii: 12 Games of Christmas' Screenshot 11

Surely 'Liu Ping' is a bit racist? Uh oh! It's Hot Coffee all over again!

I really liked Table Tennis on Xbox 360. It was cheap, cheerful, and surprisingly deep and rewarding. It was also rock hard in single-player, so it's a good thing Ellie is around to lose to me semi-regularly on Xbox Live. And now, on the Wii! Except there's no online play. And Rockstar doesn't send me games any more because I was mean to them. But still, if I ever go to her Lewisham deathtrap hovel and fancy playing a Wii game, I will fancy playing this, because the clever mixture of spin attacks and the game's gentle hand-holding for positioning combine in worthy fashion.

And hey, surely this is the archetypal Christmas Wii Sports game? After all, it's tennis. Even Gran understood that. And - you can thrash everyone at it, destroying their self-esteem and reversing the flow of goodwill Nintendo has created by making games about dogs and all that nonsense. Fight the power.

I did some sport once: I was on my primary school's table tennis team. We used to play in a huge room so we all did that trick of serving from really far back. Yes I've run out of ideas for funny facts. Stick it in your **** and ****.

Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock

'Wii: 12 Games of Christmas' Screenshot 12

My hair looks like that.

After nearly a year of people cooing over Rock Band and lazily forecasting the death of Activision's newly acquired Guitar Hero series, November's arrived and everyone's crawling back to the now Neversoft-fronted axe-matcher because, you know, it would take a lot of effort to cock this up.

Legends of Rock certainly doesn't seem to, and whatever you make of the track list the fact it's heading to Wii for the first time - among others - gives us the sort of excitement tingle usually reserved for when the pretty one who lives upstairs comes down to complain about the noise.

(It's all right, we know this sort of behaviour "heads in a bad direction". This is why we have Guitar Hero. And why she has mace, probably... You know what, that isn't funny, it's just sinister. The truth: we live beneath what occasionally sounds like a "hub" of Brighton's gay community.)

We did not have sexual relations with that woman: Because she is fictional. Not like Keeley.

the first page looked like an awsome lineup, then it went a bit downhill from there.

4 games from that list for me:

Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Super Paper Mario and Zak & Wiki

A lineup like this seems to have been a long time coming on the wii - but the wait seems worthwhile as there are some cracking games here.

Seems like theyre struggling to me - everything I've seen about umbrella chronicles has described it as luckluster. Geometry wars? A nice diversion, but a major release? Admittedly I would love to play mario and zak and wiki at xmas and maybe even MP3 (although i didnt like the previous 2), but it still can't beat the novelty feel for me. A party game, a rhythm game, a lightgun game, a 'greatest hits' game, a tacked-on sports game does not inspire me enough I'm afraid.

'Of the 12 Games of Christmas features we've done so far, this line-up saw by far the most chins stroked and calls placed in search of suitable candidates.'

Most of us anticipated that for Wii, the effort to make the list would be not as simple!! Reasonably good list though despite my low expectation that is. For me the musts are SMG, Galaxies and Resident Evil (being a regular player on the series).

MP3 and Paper are certainly worthy addition to the list, but overall Wii list is weaker than other lists in my view. However SMG is one of the simply must have AAA game on any list for both serious and casual gamers.

If other add what about LEGO, that will be available elsewhere too.

Wow, that was definitely the weakest of the Chrimbo line ups.
I really reeeeaaalllly want the new Mario game, it looks bloody lovely and it's a change from all the shooting and racing games I've had over the last few months, but I'm not forking out £200 odd just to play it (And I can honestly see nothing else I fancy on the Wii's release schedule), I'll have to play it when I'm on break in work.

Some crap on there like Super Paper Mario (bored the hell out of me), Mario & Sonic (another dreadful minigame comp), Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 (and again), Geometry Wars (Wiiware instead thx), games that are on other platforms like Tomb Raider, Lego Star Wars, Table Tennis, GH3 etc.

But on the positive side, MP3 is great, Super Mario Galaxy may be GOTY and Zack & Wiki is allegedly full of win.

Metroid Prime 3 and Super Paper Mario I already have.

Super Mario Galaxy and Zack & Wiki look like must-buys.

Umbrella Chronicles, Mario & Sonic and LEGO Star Wars I'll be waiting for the reviews of, but they all look like having potential.

Tomb Raider I already have on PS2.

Even so, 8 out of 12 games I'm actually interested it - that's pretty good. The Wii finally delivers.

If Zak and Wiki and Battalion Wars 2 were on the release schedule for this Christmas it would be a great line up for me. As it is, there's basically nothing I really want to buy in December.

Not that the other two console 12 day lists had anything more either.

I'm not too bothered when there's only 3, maybe 4, 'must get' games (I think this is true for other consoles too, at least in my opinion) - because I don't have the time or money for more than that.

Hmmm, trouble is I can't afford all of these. Good news Is I don't want a table tennis games, so I need only afford 11. Actually I dont want that rabbit whatever. Make that 10! Regardless, I will have to try and delegate some of these off to parents/siblings etc. And yeah, Endless Ocean/Forever Blue - that review should be coming up soon? Maybe they've decided its shit. Hope not!

Probably..but that's the type of title that will massively divide opinion. I could see it getting anywhere from a 4 to a 9 at Eurogamer

...and of course you can probably knock a couple of resentment points off due to the reviewer being pissed he was stuck playing a fish fondling game when he could have been playing Super Mario Galaxy.

Btw, is Geometry Wars a full price game? If so, isn't that a bit of a ripoff from a game that was originally developed to test another game and has subsequently featured for nopes in other games and has been available for DD for some time at a very low price?

Not a bad list at all - And why does noone seem to care that Galaxy Wars is coming? Waves in PGR4 is fantastic and I'd buy that in an instant. I'm really looking forward to it. Also looking forward to most of the exclusives, then GH3, Tomb Raider and LEGO Star Wars, although I'll get the first two for my 360. I still have to decide about LEGO Star Wars though, if the light sabre controls are fun then I'll buy the Wii version I guess.

It could be a blessing in disguise that Zack and wiki has slipped to 2008. The game would have went unnoticed as everybody clambers for Halo, PES, FIFA, NFS, COD4, Assassins Creed, Simpson’s, Mass Effect and all.

I’ve already got 3 of the games on the list; Umbrella Chronicles doesn’t really interest me, though it does look better than the early footage suggested. Personally I think that Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games could be a real winner; but that will be down to how well Sega implement the controls. Nights and Endless Ocean I will definitely buy; Guitar Hero III I’ll most probably buy for the 360, Tomb Raider Anniversary is another game where the control issue will decide what console I’ll buy it for.

All in all there are some fantastic games available on all consoles; buying them isn’t a problem, yet finding the time to play them all is.

Ho hum, am still quite surprised developers haven't got more coming for Wii

I think it has largest 'next-gen' installed base and is cheaper to develop for (2 GCs and all that)

So why aren't there loads of games a la SNES?

Doesn't matter short term as Mario will sell consoles. But why aren't there more games?
