We have the best games, says Microsoft

Wouldn't swap places with Sony or Nintendo.

Xbox Europe boss Chris Lewis has declared 360 has better games than any other console, which he believes will help Microsoft win the hardware war.

Speaking to our old friends GamesIndustry.biz Lewis said, "We do, genuinely, I think, have the best games for both the core and the masses.

"I certainly wouldn't trade places with any other platform holder right now. We've got the best games line-up, over 1,000 games for the holiday period - that's true for exclusive and first-party and third-party."

According to Lewis, 17.7 million Xbox 360 units have now been sold around the globe, although we reckon that's an old figure, since we first heard it in January and John Schappert has since said 18m. The attach rate is just over seven games per console - "Considerably ahead of where we stand with our competition."

Lewis said there have been lows as well as highs, however. "There are some parts of Europe where we enjoy less success than we aspire to," he conceded. "There are parts of continental and southern Europe where we made a slightly shaky start, certainly with the first version."

But he reckons factors such as a healthy software catalogue and good old Xbox Live will give Microsoft the edge over its competitors in the long run.

"We are very well positioned to win in Europe, [with the] best games for the core and the family, best service and a great set of price points to broaden our appeal to a wider community," he said, "And a lot more to come."

I love my 360 but I do think MS have focused on the US market to the detriment of their sales in Europe.
  • seasidebaz #5 4 years ago

i would agree that they have some of the best.... and also some of the worst.

it's the same with all 3 consoles, however.
  • Nylkran #6 4 years ago

What did you expect him to say the 360 is running out of steam?
That they would kill to have Mario/Zelda on the 360?
That they are worried now that the Blu-ray has now become a very clear advantage to Sony?

He is the boss at Xbox Europe, he has to say what he said, is whether you believe is true, that matters.

Microsoft should have the best game it's been out the longest! Why don't all these games companies shut up and just get on with releasing the big-guns? I want Alan Wake damnit!

In other news, "we have the best washing powder, says Persil".

    EG, this isn't interesting.
  • Darren #10 4 years ago

    @Vin - LOL

I'd argue that the *only* way to play all the "best" console games is to own an Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii; I don't think any one on their own offers me everything I want which is the very reason I do actually own all three! If I only owned an Xbox 360 I wouldn't be able to play wonderful games like Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, Zack & Wiki, Zelda: Twilight Princess, Uncharted, MLB 08: The Show or forthcoming games like Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, Gran Turismo 5 Prologue, Wipeout HD, Metal Gear Solid 4, Final Fantasy XIII, White Knight Story, MotorStorm 2, etc., etc. In fact, I'm glad I *don't* just own a 360 really! :p

I'd hate to have to choose one but if I had to it would probably be the Xbox 360 but only because of Banjo-Kazooie, which is my most wanted game at the moment.
  • Xerx3s #11 4 years ago

  • dsmx #15 4 years ago

Well at the moment I can't see why I should get an xbox 360 I have a decent PC that can play any game that the xbox 360 gets practically and why should I purchase a console that will fail at least twice in the 5 years I expect it too last.
  • gallow #16 4 years ago

  • Les #17 4 years ago

"I certainly wouldn't trade places with any other platform holder right now."

What an idiot... If he really didn't want to trade places with Nintendo (selling consoles about twice as fast at higher profit margins) his boss should fire him.

"[with the] best games for the core and the family"

Best games for the family is pure and utter bulshit.

I understand that this is just another PR interview but if the facts are painful, than don't talk about it instead of making things up...
  • GamesConnoisseur #18 4 years ago

I would not trade in X360, but at same time I would not trade away Wii and PS3! Sure X360 do get most of my playing time but Wii and PS3 do get a reasonable good share, better than they did last year.

So X360 getting a bit less share of my attention this year, but nothing yet for it to be worried at being possibly neglected and unwanted!!

  • Darren #23 4 years ago

@Benno - Actually the Wii *is* a proper console in the purest sense because it only plays games, it is the PS3 and Xbox 360 that aren't because they're marketed as those new-fangled home entertainment hub-thingies according to Sony and Microsoft. ;)
  • L42yB #24 4 years ago

    Here's my 2 cents:

MS - Best games for the hardcore
Ninty - Best games for casual market
    Sony - BluRay

Still hard to tell who really has the edge, tbh... probably ninty tho, as there are more casual gamers now than hardcore or HD fans...

We have the best games, says Microsoft.
Yes, but also the worst hardware, adds the consumer.
  • Carlo #26 4 years ago

  • Olemak #27 4 years ago

The best games, yes. Even though the PS2 obviously have a bigger library, most of the world has moved on, and while the PS2 is still a viable machine, it can't really compete with the 360 library in terms of graphics, at least, even though real mass-market games like Guitar Hero III is essentially the same on any platfprm it's published for. Either way - Microsoft deserves credit for games like Mass Effect, Halo 3, Gears of War, Crackdown, Dead Rising and Bioshock. There are just a lot more games of this level of quality than on any other current platform. The amount of downloadable games also seems to be a lot better than with the competitors. And in adittion, many of the cross-platform games seem to perform best on the 360. So yeah, the 360 wins when it comes to games.

However - there are two or three big arguments against the 360 as well, and their combined weight may make the wealth of available games a moot point.

First, and most imporant, The Xbox 360 is the worst designed and least reliable gaming console in the history of computer gaming. It is also the noisiest game console ever. Many users don't mind sending their consoles in for replacement once in a while, a lot of users do mind. They're slowly taking steps to fix this, and currently available xboxes are about as reliable as the competior's product. The brand value is pretty severly damaged, tho. So for issues as noise and reliabilty, the Xbox is a bad choice.

Second - although there are a lot of games to choose between, they're pretty much all the same. The Wii pretty much has the market for casuel, family friendly games cornered. They've got a mass market apeal that the Xbox don't even come close to, even after significant cost cuts.

And third: they don't have any long term brand leverage. Gamers have been playing their nintendos and Playstations for generations (literally); while Microsoft's last console ended in tears. And for the mass market, the mommies and daddies do have final say in what console the family will get for christmas. Personally, I know a lot of thirty- and even fortysoethings that have bought a Wii for the family, or are eagerly awaiting GT5 for which they'll get a PS3.

The 360, while they have lots and lots of great games, don't have anything that even approaches the mass market brand recognition that the PlayStation in particular has. So I think it's looking very shaky for Microsoft with the current generation of consoles is now venturing into the mass market.

It will be very interesting to see which platform GTA IV will sell best on. I think the PS3 GTA's will outsell the Xbox version in the long run, but not at launch. A year after GTA launch, we should probably see a significant margin in sales, tho... DLC or not.

Oh, and mister mass market don't even know what DLC is.

BTW: it's not a war, it's a competition. And both consoles are worth getting. I'm getting a 360 once they un-fubar the hardware.
  • peteb #28 4 years ago

  • Zomoniac #40 4 years ago

They don't have the best games for the masses though. As is proved weekly by the Wii and DS software charts, the masses want utterly shite games, which 360 doesn't have enough of. Only when it has output as bad as Game Party and Sight Training will it ever appeal to the masses. Also, it has no Sims games, which automatically rules out 99% of casual gamers.
  • scouserfuller9 #41 4 years ago

At least it shows not everyone at MS are a bunch of muppets because if he had said XBOX has the poorest games it isn't gonna do them any good is it!

It will be very interesting to see which platform GTA IV will sell best on. I think the PS3 GTA's will outsell the Xbox version in the long run, but not at launch. A year after GTA launch, we should probably see a significant margin in sales, tho... DLC or not.

I've been saying on this and other forums for quite some time that the release of GTA IV is what will cause PS3 sales to rocket. To this people have looked at me strangely, as it's a cross-platform game that will be as good if not better on 360 thanks to better online implentation and exclusive episodic content. But, and I know this from asking a lot of people, the number of 'casual gamers' (not the casual as in family market, but casual as in the 16-25yo male that occasionally plays GTA, NFS and PES and doesn't know much about gaming) that are still playing on their PS2 and have not made the jump yet is huge. To these people, GTA IV is the reason to upgrade their hardware, and to the bulk of these people the PlayStation brand is absolutely synonymous with quality gaming, and they also see a very clear link between PlayStation and Grand Theft Auto, like the two are meant to go together. They get all their info from the mainstream press which routinely reports on PS3 in terms of its amazing power and revolutionary graphics and blows it out of all proportion. They will stick with what they know and what they believe to be the best. Come the end of April, the statements made by SCE that they could 'put a turd in a box with a PlayStation label on it and millions would buy it' will be realised.
  • Apologie #43 4 years ago

are they trying to convince themselves??? poor Microsoft.
  • bad09 #44 4 years ago

sadly i have to agree with Zomoniac. There are a lot of sheep out there who don't really know about games who buy the brand not the machine. When GTA4 hits Sony WILL shift more PS3s.

But, if some are just upgrading for GTA is it not possible that when they go to buy they might (I say might) see a console offering the same game but for a £100 cheaper (even cheaper with the arcade version).

No doubt GTA did help PS2 stay the dominant console, but it's not exclusive any more.................

  • thepiedpiper #45 4 years ago

    riduckulous!!! but true of course.
  • Mr_Brown #46 4 years ago

I agree. As a gamer, I prefer the Wii as a concept, it does everything I would want a console to do. Try something completly different, support Retro gaming with VC and oozes of potential for development. But when it comes to software, Xbox360 are undoubtably the kings here. Theres simply no denying it, and I'm not trolling here ether. Software sales for the console are phenominal and blow any of its competitors away by a long way. Xbox Live, though not perfect in respect to lag/ abusive americans, is stil the best online multiplayer available, even beating the PC in some cases (but no completly!). And just the sheer quality and whats available. Sure there are far more shooters, sports and racing games available than any other, but the likes of Viva Pinata, Lost Odessey, Eternal Sonata etc show that there are extremly high quality alternatives for others, however rare they may be.

As much as I try and no matter whatever comes out for other consoles SMG, Persona 3, Final Fantasy XII, hell even WoW...nothing has managed to drag me away from the hold the 360 has over me for long. Sometimes this bothers me (in regards to my obsession with achievements which is on and off), but on a software level, nothing competes. The real losers of this generation (at least for now anyway) are Sony. As long as I have my Xbox 360 and Wii, I will never even be tempted to buy a PS3. Even MGS4 and FFXXIII have failed to tempt me and for me thats surprising as I am huge fans of each series.
  • Lawlost #47 4 years ago

@Zomoniac, surely price will be a major factor for the casual gamer when deciding which console to opt for. If GTA IV as you say is going to be the game that pushes the casual gamer into buying a new console and it is available on the PS3 and the 360 they may decide to opt for the cheaper package. Time will tell and yes I agree that they could decide that getting a blue ray player with the PS3 might tip them to Sony, having said that it has been mooted that blueray players are going to come down in price fairly swiftly. Again time will tell......

  • Darren #49 4 years ago

@Zomoniac - I completely agree with you. I think GTA IV will do more to sell the PS3 than the Xbox 360 for the reasons you stated. PS2 owners will not be able to play this new game so if it turns out to be amazing (very likely from the previews I've read) then I'd expect sales of the PS3 to increase by a noticeable amount each month between now and Christmas. While a lot of Xbox 360 owners, including myself, will be looking forward to this game, I don't think it'll sell the hardware like Halo 3 and Gears of War did. We'll see, PS2 owners could easily decide to buy the cheaper 360 to play GTA IV on but knowing how dedicated PS owners tend to me, my money is on them buying a PS3. It would help if Sony dropped the price of the PS3 to nearer £200 in time for 29th April though.

Me, I've pre-ordered the game for the Xbox 360 rather the PS3 because I believe that will be the best version but if the reviews suggest otherwise then I'll cancel my order and get the PS3 version instead. The exclusive DLC really doesn't bother me as the GTA games have plenty of gameplay out of the box.
  • Mr_Brown #50 4 years ago

@Zomoniac: I agree with you to some extent. But I'm questioning the hold Sony have over the Casual gamer these days. You have to take into account that many have moved onto the Wii and DS, something that has happened on a very large scale from what I've witnessed and others (not as large scale) have moved towards the Xbox 360. I very rarely hear anyone speaking about PLaystation whenever they are in reference to games anymore...in fact I can't remember the last time I heard anyone reference it actually. Even popular programs (US and UK) use the DS and Xbox to show characters 'playing games'. The ultimate sign was the other day when my mum was watching Emidale or something and one of the characters was playing a PSP, she said "Is that one of those DS's then?". She knows nothing about games but I know for a fact a few years ago she would have said "hes playing one of those playstations".

Basically I think GTA IV will boost PS3 sales dramatically and expect many stories about 'PS£ sells a record amount in a month' all across the internet. But it will also have a similar effect on the Xbox 360 which I feel will go un noticed or ignored more as there will be so much Sony loving and the fact that the impact on Sony will be much bigger (due to it underachieving at the moment than anything else). GTA IV will inspire a great change in fortune for Sony...but they better not be relying on it to win the console war for them. It won't even dent Nintendo and will be shrugged off by MS when it releases GoW2 and the next Halo games.

Nice arguement, you've convinced me that a smaller more focused and structured community of Xbox Live has no advantages over the PC online, which can be in places, disjointed, hard for everyone to use and is just a pain in the arse.

Go back to the playground if you don't want argue with adults :-). Shush now.

"They get all their info from the mainstream press which routinely reports on PS3 in terms of its amazing power and revolutionary graphics and blows it out of all proportion"

Don't know what mainstream press you've been reading... They only wrote about PS3 when it was delayed and they reference it in the occasional movie related article. The only console that gets any attention in mainstream media is the Wii. And rightfully so as it's the only console that the mainstream actually cares about...

As for GTA IV, it's not the mainstream attraction anymore as it was when GTA3 was released. It's rather 'been there, done that'. The masses have moved on. If Sony and MS by now haven't figured out that releasing HD versions of PS2 games is not what it takes to replicate PS2 success, their full console division management should be fired (without a golden handshake).
  • Darren #53 4 years ago

@Mr_Brown - What proof do you have that "many" PS2 owners have moved onto the Wii and DS? If anything, I'd say the bulk of the Wii audience is made up of the hardcore Nintendo fans and the new 'casual' casual gamers, like my own parents and aunties who've never shown any interest in games prior to the release of the Wii. I think there's still a lot of PS2 owners out there; that the games still sell on the platform is evidence of that and many sell far more copies than most Wii games. ;)

Unlike both Nintendo and Microsoft, Sony haven't forced PS2 owners to buy their new machine, instead the continued support for the older machine has allowed them to move up in their own time when the price is right or there's games they want. That has got to count for something. PS2 sales didn't take off until Gran Turismo 3, GTA III and Metal Gear Solid 2 were released and I've no doubt that history will repeat itself on the PS3, especially once the machine hits £200 or less.
  • bad09 #54 4 years ago

    @ Darren

"especially once the machine hits £200 or less"

I'd buy it today at that price!
  • Mr_Brown #55 4 years ago

I dont have proof, was an educated guess. Though there can't be any doubt that at least a large group must have brought one or the other down to the sales and sucess of the consoles. There simply aren't that many old Fanboys about or the Gamecube would have probably sold more, though many might be mums and grannies now. But...you have to bare in mind that these PS2 owners are getting older and many may be thoughs grannies, mums/ dads. And do really think kids (between 10 and 16) are going to be patient enough to wait for a few years for the PS3 to go down to a decent price point. Most already have a Wii and DS and aren't held back by financial demands (they'll would have bitched and moaned to get a PS3 if they really wanted one but many obviously haven't yet).

Saying that, I could be completly wrong and what you say is definatly possible. I know the PS3 sales will definatly rise dramatically over the next year, theres no doubt about that. But I'm just not sure to what extent. I don't necessarily think Sony is in decline and is losing ground, but rather, Nintendo (especially) and Xbox are making ground much more quickly they may be able to match before the next generation. Guess we'll have to wait and see though!

Plus: TBH I am waiting for the PS3 to come down to £199 as for that price I would definatly buy one!!And I still regualrly play my PS2. :-P

  • Darren #56 4 years ago

With standalone BD players dropping in price, I think it's only a matter of time before Sony announce another price drop for the PS3 to keep it competitive and the best time would obviously be before 29th April. Even Sony can't be stupid enough to ignore the importance that a game GTA IV would have on hardware sales. They only have one model on sale though and it is expensive at £300 so they need to drop the price by £100 and then consider releasing a newer model with a larger drive (120 GB+) and maybe even four USB ports and memory card slots for, say, £279. Both with the Dualshock 3 controller obviously. :)
  • Darren #57 4 years ago

Mr_Brown - "But...you have to bear in mind that these PS2 owners are getting older and many may be thoughs grannies, mums/ dads."

Somehow I would think that these older PS2 owners you speak of would be more interested in a PS3 or even a 360 rather than a Wii since they grew up on a 'diet" of Gran Turismo, Metal Gear Solid and GTA and Nintendo's platform doesn't have any of those kinds of games. I think the younger 10-16 year old demographic already buy the Wii and DS, I don't believe that most of them are ex-PS2 owners myself.
  • drumbaby #58 4 years ago

it's a matter of taste, both the X360 and Ps3 have some heavyweight titles on they'r belt... now for 2008 "in my opinion" Ps3 titles are much more intresting and diverse. Oh, and by the way, titles play a big role but the reliability and all round support of a system are equally important, the Ps3 reflects the quality that only a company leader in electronics can achieve, the Blu Ray is a big plus, the new project Home will reinforce an already very competent multiplayter offer and the excluves... oh my, Motorstorm2, Killzone 2, Resistance2,Haze, SOCOM, Little Big Planet, MGS4, GT Prologue, Gods of War etc... how can you compete with that???

the exact same thing applies to the PS2 sales figures. tonnes are due to 'Disc Read Error' or slims lasers cutting up DVDs.

Well, as my manufacturer of choice had the wisdom and foresight to include a HD with all consoles, read speeds aren't an issue once you've installed data. I'll take a quick install over permanently crippled disk capacity anyday thankyou. I'll also take wireless, bluray, blutooth, the ability to slap in any new HD a sensible price and a side order of internet access whilst I'm at it.

    Locoroco - Little Big Planet - Everyday Shooter - Singstar - Wipeout - GTurismo - UT3 - Haze - MGS - FFantasy - GoWar - Team ICO

Now that's a sprectrum (not all released but a clear indication of the marketing strategy behind Sony - as it was with PS2) that outshines any paltry offering MS has outside it's homebase of western drivers and shooters and anything Nintendo has outside it's comfort zone of shovelware party bollocks or 20 yr old recycled eastern IP.

PS3 is the most complete console package ever. End of.

  • Kryon #71 4 years ago

"Well, as my manufacturer of choice had the wisdom and foresight to include a HD with all consoles"

Yeah, that's because you have to install games on the PS3 for half an hour or you don't get to play it at all ;-)

Not going to read any of what is probably already a stupid fanboy vagina party...EG reports this because it was from an interview AND IS GAMING NEWS.
  • symbiote #73 4 years ago

    @Kryon

At the moment it has more games in a certain few genres and that's simply down to it's early release. It's a narrow view of what gaming should be and one that's diminishing in strength on a monthly basis. I'm to take it you're going down with your ship?
  • symbiote #74 4 years ago

    @Kryon

Half an hour? It's one game and it's 20 minutes. A lot less than the time it takes to fix a RROD.

At present the 360 has the best fighters, the best RPG's, the best racers, the best JRPG's, the best shooters, and the best multi-platform titles across all genres currently available for these consoles. You can't deny it, it's the simple truth.

You guys really do sound desperate, nevermind, maybe the PS3 will get a good game 'next year', thats what you boys like to tell yourselves, right?
  • seasidebaz #82 4 years ago

    @kryon:

    not true.

fighters: purely because the d-pad is shit on the 360, vf5 for ps3 wins.
rpgs: oblivion is (imo) better on the ps3. mostly because it looks nicer. although it is the same game.
racers: gt5. say no more. want more? ok, wipeout.
shooters: ok, you can (kind of) have that one. although ut3 is one of the best i have played in ages, and only supports mods on ps3 and pc
jrpgs: ps3 has final fantasy 7. it's getting ff13, as well as disgaea.
multi-platform: with the older stuff, the 360 has the edge, although burnout paradise shows that games can be identical. so no winners for that one.

in the end, you were wrong. the xbox has the biggest selection, but not necessarily the best.
  • Kryon #83 4 years ago

    @seasidebaz

We are talking about games, not preference in controllers, I play VF5 with a Hori stick (this far outweighs any pad) so, no VF5 is definately better on the 360. GT5, Wipe out? I said "at present", these games are not out yet so once again, you lose. FF7 is a PS1 game my friend. So in the end, no, I'm not wrong...

Most of the games you mention are either not out yet or not PS3 titles at all...Like I said...Maybe 'next year' eh..

    * x360 has DOA4, and vf5 ONLINE.

rpgs: oblivion is (imo) better on the ps3. mostly because it looks nicer. although it is the same game.
    * have you heard of mass effect?

jrpgs: ps3 has final fantasy 7. it's getting ff13, as well as disgaea.
    * x360 has blue dragon, lost odyssey, eternal sonata, is getting infinite undiscovery, the last remnant.

multi-platform: with the older stuff, the 360 has the edge, although burnout paradise shows that games can be identical. so no winners for that one.
    * see x360 vs ps3 round 9 for further information.

You are forgetting Uncharted, Ratchet &CLank:TOD, in terms of shooters, COD4, UT3, Resistance:FOM, Racers, Motorstorm, Burnout, Gt etc... Folklore and Oblivion, Multiplayer Warhawk etc etc etc... both have an equal amount of great titles,it's only a matter of taste, oh, and by the way, let's not forget that X360 had an year in advantage... the point is that the Ps3 have better overallvalue and the best titles for 2008.

"Ratchet &CLank:TOD, in terms of shooters"

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!!!!!! I nearly cried laughing at that one!
  • Kryon #89 4 years ago

  • seasidebaz #90 4 years ago

like i said, more != better.

oh, and i think oblivion is better than mass effect anyway. and don't use the eternal sonata thing, cos that's coming to ps3.

as for the hori stick, that means to play vf5 on 360 costs 2-3x as much as ps3? i picked up a copy for £14.99 brand new, it plays great on a ps3 pad...

and those faceoffs are just flamebait. who cares if one console displays slightly fewer lines or has slightly worse colours? i am not going to run both consoles side by side on identical tv's and look at the output with a magnifying glass. the game experience is the same, so who cares? plus i set my tv up using a guide from avforums, so all my games look nice anyway.
and yes, ff7 is a ps1 game, but it runs on the ps3. therefore the greatest rpg of all time is on the ps3.

gt5 prologue comes out next week. sure, wipeout doesn't, but what's a month or two, really? not very long in all honesty.

i don't lose. the 360 has some great games, just don't try and tell me that it paps on the ps3.

edit: and for those who think ff6 was better, don't forget the ff anthology also works on ps3.....

    @Arbiter

This site is choc full of GAMERs most of whom own(ed) a PS2 also. Why? To play GAMES?

The reason why they're mainly 360 owners now, is because they want to PLAY INTERACTIVE VIDEO GAMES!

Not pay and support Sony blindly! Wake up children!

@Apologie - here we go again - a massive list of games that don't exist.

The PS3 was delayed. There has been as much time to develop Ps3 games as there has been to develop 360ones, but they take a fucking age of optimisation for a slow optical drive, hardly any RAM, and strange processor + architecture.

When the (good) games (that really exist and don't get canned) are coming thick and fast for the PS3in a couple of years - guess what - loads of us will become PS3 owners! Until then - what's the point?
  • seasidebaz #106 4 years ago

  • Ryze #108 4 years ago

    @seasidebaz

That's lovely, and when it's actually available then I'll be wanting to play it.

Until then... it's either Forza, GT4 or GTR.

To play online on a console... that'll be Forza then.

  • seasidebaz #111 4 years ago

    @ryze:

    what, the car jumping?

one of the courses (forget which one, it was in forza 1 too though... could be maple valley raceway) has a little hill when driving round it the wrong way, people line up under that hill, and someone else tries to jump the line.

hours of hilarity ensued, although you need to make sure you are playing with peeps who want to do that too

  • Les #114 4 years ago

Man, this is turning into a shameful thread again... But then again, suits the story...
  • Ryze #115 4 years ago

    @seasidebaz

Duh - the exclusive games that were indevelopment long before the console's release were designed around having plenty of storage - many next gen projects ar quite ambitious...

Fast forward to the real PS3, and they find that they can't actually run the game, as one level doesn't fit in RAM, and streaming from the BD and keeping the framerate up is a damn difficult thing to do.

Of course you can fit a game / level in 200Mb RAM (after reservations) - but how long will that take to load from the BD? How much of a BD's 50Gb will you really need if you shoehorn all of your assets / data into RAM? Fuck all.

1080p went out of the window on most games ages ago, as it'd take so long optimising the graphics to stop the framerate nosediving as to make it a waste of resources. Plus - where are all of these huge textures being stored? Thin air?

1Gb RAM and a 4x or faster BD-ROM with a better gfx card and the PS3 would be a wondermachine worth splashing out on over the 360. As it is... it really can wait - as it's nothing special without a MUCH bigger library of games.
  • seasidebaz #116 4 years ago

    @ryze: ??? i wasn't saying anything about that!

although... one level should fit in ram. if you have 1 vertex, which uses about 3 bytes, multiply that by 10,000,000, you get 26-ish mb; all the textures and vertex data are stored in the vram... so i don't see what you mean?

edit: as a reference, a cube has 8 vertices

and if you were referring to my 2k statement, or my 1meg statement, we are talking about 18-20 years ago here! i know things have moved along...

Sorry mister what's-your-name but over here, in Greece we don't have Xbox Live and we have to fake a UK address in order to create an account, voiding the darn Terms & Conditions (yep, where it says that the info we provide is real etc).
    How about fixing that, eh?
(Sorry guys, i'm actually commenting on the article.. :p)
  • Ryze #118 4 years ago

@seasidebaz so a game is just a collection of polygons with textures pasted on them.

    riiiight...

  • seasidebaz #119 4 years ago

no but the levels are pretty much, sure you have to store the normals etc. but yeah, they're pretty much a nice picture with some rules that govern them

"This site has the biggest selection of fanatical xbox supporters of any gaming site on the net."

  • OfficialBlue #121 4 years ago

  • JackB #122 4 years ago

Xbox Live is a big advantage to a percentage of gamers. That percentage is higher in North America and the UK, because there are so many English speaking players to match up with online.

If you prefer Italian, or Spanish or Japanese, I'd say it must be much harder to find a ton of players online. Live is great, but it's probably less so in the countries where the 360 is weakest. The price drop should help though.
  • monkie_king #123 4 years ago

@Arbiter, I'm afraid that you seem to have mistaken this for the forums. Please keep any calm, reasoned debate and good sense away from the front-page in future, we don't tolerate that kind of talk here.

@seasidebaz So... no audio then.Where do the music and sound effects go? No physics? No other graphics than textures? Interesting...

I'd love to see one of your 'games' projects, or even your ideas, as I reckon they'd be swiss cheese full of holes overlooking what a computer is doing whilst running a game.

  • seasidebaz #130 4 years ago

    ryze:

don't be an idiot, audio DOESN'T go in the VIDEO ram

generally, with audio, you use an audio buffer, divided into channels, which are quite small. then overwrite as required. bungie got very excited cos they managed to do 7 channels of audio in 5.1 (i think) for halo3, which is very impressive, although they only used 5 in the end (i think cos of memory issues...)

the ps3 doesn't just have 256mb ram, it has 256mb vram as well, for the video stuff, ie TEXTURES and MODELS. edit: for clarification, models are a series of vertices linked by a vertex buffer to create the models, and the vertex data is stored in vram

learn something about game design before saying that audio goes in the video hole.
    Edited by 1 at 13/03/08 @ 18:55

FOOL - you're the one that's decided that I said that audio goes in video RAM.

although... one level should fit in ram. if you have 1 vertex, which uses about 3 bytes, multiply that by 10,000,000, you get 26-ish mb; all the textures and vertex data are stored in the vram... so i don't see what you mean?

here i mention graphics going into VRAM

@seasidebaz so a game is just a collection of polygons with textures pasted on them

    here you mention graphics
    then i mention
no but the levels are pretty much, sure you have to store the normals etc. but yeah, they're pretty much a nice picture with some rules that govern them

sorry, i ommited audio, but physics come under the rules which govern the nice picture,

then i went off on one blah blah blah about audio buffers and crap

    sorry, it's been a long day ;)
  • Ryze #133 4 years ago

So - once again, where are all of these audio samples for sound effects being stored again?

In RAM - ie, the main memory, ie, 200Mb after the reserved portions for the OS.

Now - this data has to be loaded from somewhere before it is used. That'll be the Blu-Ray disc.

That'll be taking ages then, unless it's preinstalled on the HDD, which by the looks of it will be filling up sometime very soon.

Yes, graphics / textures are stored in video RAM - very good! So - does that appear there my magic also, or does it have to be loaded from somewhere in order to be displayed in your game?

where will it all come from again? How long will it take?
  • Ryze #134 4 years ago

Fair enough - a long day it has been indeed.
  • Ryze #135 4 years ago

I'll give the PS3 a point for having shinier, sweatier fighters in FNR3.

We all know that 'T3h N3xt G3n' is about sweat effects!

    /runs
  • seasidebaz #136 4 years ago

ryze: i have no idea! lol i've never tried making a game for the ps3, and from experience you use a bit of the hdd to page audio files in, prep them before you need them, then dispose of them afterwards ie virtual memory. so yeah, you do need to store something in ram, but i don't know what or how much.

i don't envy the devs who have to work on the thing, the 360 is so much easier to program for (which i have done! in xna...) but they do turn out some cracking work.
  • seasidebaz #137 4 years ago

ryze: but then again, those effects don't even come close to the sweat in table tennis on 360. that was just awesome :)

(sorry, regarding the fnr3 comment hehe)

The moment i saw the headline i KNEW this was going to have a lot of posts.

Come on people.. get a life!

(I know, i'm one to talk!)
  • smelly #140 4 years ago

    I own a Wii and a 360.

At the moment i'm happy with both (even though i'm embarrased to own a 360 after reading lots of the 360 fanboys who jump into threads slagging the other two off).

But I look to see what's coming up on the ps3 and wish i had a ps3 instead of a 360 to be honest, and there's only space under my tv for two of the monster sized machines!

I can *REALLY* see myself getting a ps3 by the end of the year and selling my 360.

Aint selling my wii though.. at least not until pikmin inevitably comes out for it :-)

Almost everyone involved in gaming PR--and PR generally, come to think of it--really needs to grasp the concept of "show, don't tell".
  • Apologie #142 4 years ago

With the likes of MotorStorm, Resistance, Unreal Tournament 3, Uncharted, Heavenly Sword, Ratchet & Clank and Warhawk all on store shelves, you can certainly experience some of the best games this generation has to offer, only on PS3. Multi-format releases are also improving, with the differences between Xbox 360 and PS3 versions getting less and less noticeable. Burnout and Call of Duty 4 are two excellent examples.

As long as you've got your PS3 hooked up to your TV with an HDMI cable you can experience full 1080p movies for no extra cost. Now that Blu-ray has come out victorious in the HD movie format war the Blu-ray playback in the PS3 is a real bonus. The console is also currently the best option if you're looking for a player as it's fully upgradeable through software

When you buy a PlayStation 3 you're not only getting what's out now, but what's coming further down the line. The games due this year look great, but in 2009 we could well see the games that show the real power of the PS3. Gran Turismo 5, God of War 3 and Final Fantasy XIII are huge blockbuster games, only coming to PS3 and potentially more impressive than any games we'll see on the Xbox 360 in the future.

The Xbox 360 isn't nearly as reliable as it should be and this is something that the PlayStation 3 doesn't suffer from. Sure, people have reported broken PS3s but it's a small percentage. You're paying more for your PS3 but you're relatively safe in the knowledge that it won't break a few months down the line. What's more, you can hardly hear it when it's in use; something that can't be said for the Xbox 360. A Hard drive and wireless adapter can also be found in every PS3.

Don't want to pay £40 a year to play online games? On the PlayStation 3 all your online gaming is free. While some of the functionality seen in Xbox LIVE isn't currently present, Sony is continuing to improve the PSN service. With network-wide friends lists access starting to appear in more and more PS3 games, Xbox LIVE is slowly being caught up.

    Home

This online virtual network where you'll be able to meet up with friends, share content and organise online game is unlike anything available on the Xbox 360 and Xbox LIVE. With Sony working on new content for their games accessible via Home, it's certainly looking like more than a novelty virtual chat room. Being able to head over to a mate's online apartment, chat to the gathered friends and then seamlessly head off into a game sounds good.

    @apologie:

we already decided all the consoles have their strengths and weaknesses.

strengths: ps3 and xbox360 both have great exclusive games,

weaknesses: ps3 is a bitch to program for, and xbox has its fanboys!

    lol

edit: i forgot the wii! i have one and i love it. best. console. EVAH. (but the 3rd party games are a bit poo...)

  • McFly55 #146 4 years ago

i dont know why people seem to care which consoles have the best games, all it seems to me is that people come here to bitch about the console they dont own.

if your console has such great games go and bloody play them then.

Whether or not the ps3 is more or less powerful

you'd have to be pretty retarded NOT to realise that the ps3 will undoubtedly outsell both the 360 and the wii and get all the best games - just like the ps2 before it.

I think that's why the 360 fanboys are so defensive and jump into every thread saying "machine x" is crap, and dismiss anyone who argues against them as "fanboys" or "trolls".

"We are very well positioned to win in Europe, [with the] best games for the core and the family"

I'd love to see these family games he's going on about. I don't think Scene It! is exactly going to usurp Wii Sports any time soon.

you'd have to be pretty retarded NOT to realise that the ps3 will undoubtedly outsell both the 360 and the wii and get all the best games - just like the ps2 before it.

Well no Smelly you'd actually be "retarded"(you cant say that btw) to think it will considering the current situation, this is well into the first half of PS3s second year now and its still in third place, still not got the best games, still not stealing all the support(we dont want them to either). If anyhing you'd be stupid to think any success is garenteed in this industry, look at past generations(big changes in short spaces of time) look at Japan today(Nintendo own it now)... its not likely even Sony have that kind of luck/devotion. How dense can you be to think that its garenteed PS2 like success though? Theres only one console that has a shot at that and it aint the PS3 or 360, its the Wii. Its only a good thing too IMO, we dont want Sony having control of any market, they rarely deliver what they promise and rarely innovate too. Sonybots are also the most ill informed, naive and deluded gamers around they could do with something to snap them out of their zombie-like Sony trance.

Ive got to say between my dislike of Sony's practises in this industry and the qualities of the average loyal Playstation fan(taste in games if they beleive what they say isnt very settling, the level of knowlege of the industry and consoles in general is low, the level of ignorance, pettyness and bitterness is very high so much so that the idea of online gaming with such a community is well... its not pretty is it?) its very easy to go off the idea of buying a PS3 totally . I probably wont ever buy a PS3 out of principal now, even if I could afford to and Sony do eventually turn things around by offering something I want(like AAA innovative games, or just AAA games in general would be a good start).

Also you do troll and heck of alot of others here do too(EG has always been bad for it but with the increasing insecurity due to the Playstation brands faiding success rate, Sonybots have gone overboard this gen) theres no denying that(perhaps in your mind you think "Im just tellin the truthez and they dont wanna hear" buts thats just deluded), not all the time but dont be bitter when people point it out.
  • seasidebaz #156 4 years ago

ffs, lighten up, they're machines that play games!

they're not going to cure cancer! (well, actually maybe the ps3 could do that...)

they're made to give you entertainment, although judging by some people on here (xbox fanboys) they seem to think that you NEED an xbox360 to have fun! bollox! i had all 3 consoles at one point, sold the xbox cos needed cash, am i having any less fun? NO!

i'm sure these people are the same ones who used to have megadrives and argue that their mhz was faster than a mode 7

stop trying to read into sales. unless you're an analyst, you probably will get it wrong. just play the games and have fun.

oh, and just because you get a higher number when you add all the review scores together doesn't mean you have "da bestest gamez" mr microsoft man.

edit: microsoft man: "1000 x 5..... wow ar gamez scored da 5000!!!111! dat is better dander 9 scores for ps£"
