Watch us play SEGA Rally
Captured footage on EGTV.
We've made noises from our mouths at you about SEGA Rally rather a lot recently. There's been those two previews and that recent play test, where Tom had to try and concentrate on the road while passenger (and SEGA Racing Studio boss) Guy Wilday talked in his ear. We even based a Eurogamer TV episode around the filthy racer. What we're trying to say is that it's good.
So in an effort to convey this to you, we chained cameraman James to the bonnet of a rally car (that looks like an Xbox 360) and asked him to capture three-separate-sections of footage from three different tracks. The result is now showing on EGTV.
Things to watch out for as you virtually wheel-spin your way to victory are chiefly the deformations in the track. You see, cars weigh rather a lot, and we aren't roaring around on tarmac here. So as you go, you'll leave a firm impression on the ground you pass over, offering a bit more friction for the next lap on icy circuits, for example.
Cameraman James wanted me to tell you that your rumble pad responds to how much mess you're in. He also wanted me to express that it was all very good fun and reminiscent of those days in the smelly arcades with a burly chap near you who was probably after your spending money. It even has the helicopters. Wink, wink.
So, without further ado, pop over to Eurogamer TV for our captured-footage of SEGA Rally. Any flaws are down to our video player, which is due an upgrade soon, and not the game, which really does look lovely.

Wait a minute...

The track deformation, especially on the sand, seemed to be having a larger effect on the handling than it ever did in Motorstorm too.

Or even picked up a gamepad before, the cack-handed, banana fingered buffoon.
Even my wife would do better and I'm convinced she thinks arcade cars have "wrong way" stencilled on their windscreen.

Also would've liked to see one video using the chase cam view, not everyone drives as though they're welded to the front bumper with their chin scraping along the surface !
Apart from that - can't wait to hit those very very long easy lefts :]

Nah, not really. I just tried it, and I barely noticed any effect on the handling, if there was any at all. I might be wrong though.

Absolutely spot on. It's not really been an issue up til now but as EG exclusives like this certainly seem to suffer it really does make complete sense to go down the route above, even if only as an option.
As to the video, it looks just right in style, sounds on the money and I already want to play it. One major question for EG remains though.
I bought a Saturn about six months ago, having had one from launch originally. There was always something truly unique that Sega Rally had amongst other racers - you just know the feel of it the second you put your foot down for the first time. Playing it again got that flooding right back.
Does this have that indefinable something that marks it out as the sequel to the original? Does it just scream "Yep, it's me again!" at you?
If it does then damn, I'm sold!

I'm glad the rumble pad on my PS3 will respond to how much mess I'm in.
Wait a minute... my xbox 360 just died again - no rumble here either

Hang your head in shame...

Mud does affect the handling significantly, not only the mud that already was present in the track, but also at portions where it's carved out. Sure enough, it's just a texture being drawn on the scenery, but it does affect the handling.
No, it's NOT just a graphical trick.
Race in tracks like Tenderizer more if you don't think so, you'll feel the difference soon enough.

Apart from that it looked solid if not spectacular.
