Watch us play SEGA Rally

Captured footage on EGTV.

We've made noises from our mouths at you about SEGA Rally rather a lot recently. There's been those two previews and that recent play test, where Tom had to try and concentrate on the road while passenger (and SEGA Racing Studio boss) Guy Wilday talked in his ear. We even based a Eurogamer TV episode around the filthy racer. What we're trying to say is that it's good.

So in an effort to convey this to you, we chained cameraman James to the bonnet of a rally car (that looks like an Xbox 360) and asked him to capture three-separate-sections of footage from three different tracks. The result is now showing on EGTV.

Things to watch out for as you virtually wheel-spin your way to victory are chiefly the deformations in the track. You see, cars weigh rather a lot, and we aren't roaring around on tarmac here. So as you go, you'll leave a firm impression on the ground you pass over, offering a bit more friction for the next lap on icy circuits, for example.

Cameraman James wanted me to tell you that your rumble pad responds to how much mess you're in. He also wanted me to express that it was all very good fun and reminiscent of those days in the smelly arcades with a burly chap near you who was probably after your spending money. It even has the helicopters. Wink, wink.

So, without further ado, pop over to Eurogamer TV for our captured-footage of SEGA Rally. Any flaws are down to our video player, which is due an upgrade soon, and not the game, which really does look lovely.

I'm glad the rumble pad on my PS3 will respond to how much mess I'm in.

    Wait a minute...

I didn't think it was anything too spectacular, graphics wise, but it still looks like a lot of fun to actually play, looked super smooth, and I'd imagine it would be a right blast on live.
The track deformation, especially on the sand, seemed to be having a larger effect on the handling than it ever did in Motorstorm too.

Has James ever played a racer before?

Or even picked up a gamepad before, the cack-handed, banana fingered buffoon.

Even my wife would do better and I'm convinced she thinks arcade cars have "wrong way" stencilled on their windscreen.
  • Syrok #6 5 years ago

@captainrentboy: That's because it hasn't had any effect on the handling in Motorstorm at all.
  • captainrentboy #7 5 years ago

Ahhh Syrok, I thought it was meant to effect the car handling, I wondered why nothing really happened as I drove over the ridges on the various tracks, so Motorstorm's deformation was only there to look pretty was it?

Not wrong about the video player. I can download 2.5 MB in a second - and that thing barely manages to spit 150k a sec at me. Why EG don't do the same as Xboxyde & use torrents I just don't know, it's not just for illegal stuff - it's good for sharing the load as well - not to mention you'd retain the quality of your captures.

Also would've liked to see one video using the chase cam view, not everyone drives as though they're welded to the front bumper with their chin scraping along the surface !

Apart from that - can't wait to hit those very very long easy lefts :]

Of course the ruts on MotorStorm affect the handling. Try a Mud Plugger on Mud Pool, after the second and third lap it's like going round on rails.

Nah, not really. I just tried it, and I barely noticed any effect on the handling, if there was any at all. I might be wrong though.

Man, I bet that'll look great when someone switches the fricking lights on.

Absolutely spot on. It's not really been an issue up til now but as EG exclusives like this certainly seem to suffer it really does make complete sense to go down the route above, even if only as an option.

As to the video, it looks just right in style, sounds on the money and I already want to play it. One major question for EG remains though.

I bought a Saturn about six months ago, having had one from launch originally. There was always something truly unique that Sega Rally had amongst other racers - you just know the feel of it the second you put your foot down for the first time. Playing it again got that flooding right back.

Does this have that indefinable something that marks it out as the sequel to the original? Does it just scream "Yep, it's me again!" at you?

If it does then damn, I'm sold!

I wish EG would use better quality videos. They might be fine for low-res stuff on the Wii and PS2 but they're totally inadequate for showing the detail in Xbox 360 and PS3 games. SEGA Rally looked dreadful in those videos with blurry road textures and blocky trees but I'm sure that's just the poor video compression. I was watching the Hi quality stream as well so god only knows what the Lo quality one is like!

Didn't EG use Torrents for demos and stuff at one point?
  • login_name #14 5 years ago

I hope it's better in the flesh than it looks in them videos. I'm really looking forward to this but it doesn't look like it has that Sega Rally feel to it. The tracks don't look wide enough, they haven't got that pure arcadey look about them and the music sucks major ass. Need to change that, put the old classics in there or something.
  • YourMessageHere #15 5 years ago

I assume everyone who's looking forward to this is a Sega Rally fan already, since speaking as someone who's never played it, the video did absolutely nothing for me. Just looked dull to me. Still, if that's what you want, excellent for you I suppose.

    @jonthepymm

You finished your post a bit short. Have added missing words for you - it's okay no need for thanks :)

Wait a minute... my xbox 360 just died again - no rumble here either

kill_crazy, that was terrible, I've come to expect faaaar better posts from Sony Zealots and Xbots,(or whatever they're called nowadays).
    Hang your head in shame...

I'm part of the "Motorstorm also uses mud properly" crowd.
Mud does affect the handling significantly, not only the mud that already was present in the track, but also at portions where it's carved out. Sure enough, it's just a texture being drawn on the scenery, but it does affect the handling.

No, it's NOT just a graphical trick.

Race in tracks like Tenderizer more if you don't think so, you'll feel the difference soon enough.
  • oreillymj #19 5 years ago

Not too sure about the collision detection between the cars. At one stage the footage was inside the wire frame of the Xsara for a good 2-3 seconds.

Apart from that it looked solid if not spectacular.
