WarHawk on Blu-ray after all

Not just a download game.

Last week we heard that WarHawk would be an online-only game, leading to speculation that the game would be offered for download via Sony's PlayStation Store.

Not so, says the American arm of SCE. "Officially, WarHawk will be released as a Blu-ray-based product. It will see release in late summer," the company told IGN.

The spokesperson also dismissed reports that Phil Harrison had specifically labelled WarHawk a download-only game, telling IGN that this was a "misinterpretation".

What we can expect according to producer Dylan Jones - speaking at GDC last week - is for WarHawk to "leverage many of the features" shown off during the PS3 Home and LittleBigPlanet online demos.

Quite what that means is anyone's guess. Which is why we have a comment system, obviously.

"leverage many of the features shown off during the PS3 Home and LittleBigPlanet online demos."

Maybe you will be able to slap stickers everywhere whilst you blast the crap out of each other...?

Don't think Phil Harrison's comments were 'misinterpreted'. I just get the feeling that they are working this stuff out as they along. No big scheme, just whatever will net them the most cash. Releasing the game as a £40 disc will make them more money than a £15 download. Well, if its any good in the first place and they release a portion of the game on PSN in advance.

Did I imagine it or is this game multiplayer only?

Whats the chance that next week they say the game currently takes up 22 gig of space making Blu Ray a neccessity?

disc - Actually you couldn't be more wrong. It's the media and so called "journalists" who make up rumours and speculations and stupid readers who trawl through this stuff and take it as fact as opposed to just some bloke trying to get site hits. Where have they EVER said it was download only? Oh right, they didn't, it was all internet rumours. Perhaps it's not them who can't make up their minds but instead it's the lack of thought involved in the people who read and believe every rumour that gets invented to increase site traffic?

Pac-man - Yes, it is multiplayer and online only. Thats got good and bad points, on the one hand they can concentrate on the one aspect they're trying to perfect as opposed to "tacking" on a single player campaign (e.g. Halo2, brilliant online but worthless SP campaign) and so far the game looks brilliant (fro what i've seen on gametrailers). On the other hand I wonder how "newbies" will get a chance to practice. Say you get a PS3 this Xmas and want to play Warhawk, how to you practice first? Or do you have no choice but to go into a game populated by people who have been playing it for over 6 months and end up getting blown to bits before you even familiarise yourself with the controls? THAT may cause a problem for anyone who may consider it later down the line

    @ Scythe

I agree with you regarding Halo 2's appeal. I imagine most people just played it online after going through SP once. I would rather have solid MP than a average MP with a weak SP tacked on and tarnishing an otherwise reputable title - IM LOOKING AT YOU CALL OF DUTY 3!

"Releasing the game as a £40 disc will make them more money than a £15 download."

I don't think it would, actually.

A £15 download would be pure profit for Sony, but a £40 disc would mostly go on VAT, the retailer's profit, distribution, packaging etc.

    yeah what chupachups said.

Plus there's eliminating the used market, and the price is constant and will always be £15 so overall could end up making more money.

Providing enough people are online enabled to actually buy it.

I thought it was known last week that it will be bluray and download?
  • andyk #10 5 years ago

if SCEA say this will also be a blu-ray version, doesn't that mean the game is considerable in size? If it is infact downloadable, it can't be of a size to warrent using blu-ray otherwise it would take far too long for normal broadband connections to download - are we expected to wait for days while the game to background download?

So why not just put it on a regular DVD. I know Sony want to use blu-ray where possible to justify including the drive in the PS3, but early PS2 titles still used CD cos they were cheaper to produce for games less than 700mb. Why waste money printing blu-rays when DVDs must be far cheaper at this point in time?

chupachups - I agree with you, not sure where my reasoning came from. The same principle you are stating makes the Shivering Isles download for Oblivion a rip off doesn't it? Practically £20 for an expansion pack that you download - no manual, box or disc!

The fact that Sony has at the very least considered releasing the game in traditional retail form assures me that the game has a fair bit of content in it and is not the watered down download only Warhawk that has been hinted at on some sites.

What I have seen of the game till now looks solid and it looks fun to play so I hope it shapes up well.
  • sanctusmortis #12 5 years ago

Surely though, they can't release it as a full price game? It doesn't seem to have enough content to justify it. I'd hope they have a "budget price" band already in place, á la 360's releases like Table Tennis.

Well I didn't know it, and I can't think of anyone who did.

How exactly does one 'leverage' 'features'

    ?
