Warhammer Online delayed

Developer reviewing work.

Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning has been delayed in the US and Europe until Q1 2008, EA Mythic said yesterday, with the developer claiming its takeover by Electronic Arts is largely responsible - but not in a bad way.

"Since our acquisition by EA, we have been afforded many wonderful development opportunities and we plan to take full advantage of everything that is available. This includes taking several additional months to make the best MMORPG possible," Mythic's Mark Jacobs wrote in a community newsletter.

Jacobs says that while most of the work on the game's Dwarf and Greenskin zones is already complete, the team has decided to go back over that work and make some changes, implementing new ideas and lessons learned in the last nine months. "What has already emerged from this dedicated time of focused polish is nothing short of spectacular. In the Dwarf and Greenskin zones there is now more war, more Warhammer, and more of what makes WAR great," said Jacobs. The team is also now working on Empire and Chaos zones.

"By extending our development time, we'll be able to do these in-depth reviews several times prior to launch to ensure all areas of WAR benefit from the experience of ongoing development. EA is totally supportive of our decision and are behind us 100%. We all believe WAR will be the next great MMORPG and being part of EA affords us the time we need to make it so. It is EA's ongoing commitment to quality that will allow us, and other EA studios, to deliver great games, now and in the future," Jacobs added. While he admits that the delay is "probably not the news you were hoping to hear", he's confident that the team will eventually turn out "a truly great next-generation MMORPG" worthy of the Games Workshop name.

You can read the entire newsletter over on WarCry.com, or perhaps you'd like to read our Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning preview. We'll leave it with you.

aww.. well if gets better for its new release, than that's ok. Its not like its a huge delay really given the scope and scale of a project like this.

Shame, this is one MMORPG that has piqued my interest - just about the only one since I stopped playing WoW (though that 9/10 review has me looking at LOTRO....)

first impressions are very important to get an mmo going, so it best be very polished when they finish with all this extra time damnit

If I'm not mistaken they have 4 more zones to go - I wonder if we might not see further delays.

I'm ok with this. I only got WoW in January and would like more time to get bored of it before dropping it for Warhammer - which I will.

Boo, I was looking forward to this this year! Ah well... LOTRO it is?

Just let me know which classes are going to make up the Dark Elves.

If you don't put in Agents of Khaine and instead put in something like Corsairs I will most upset. Much like Hammerers over Slayers.

Who would'nt want to be a Slayer? and their even in the intro!
  • Azazel #10 5 years ago

C'mon man... Corsairs? You get those cool dragon skin cloaks :)

Anyway, I'll be getting this I'd say.

/hopes they add in the ability to play as a Blood Dragon knight at some point.

You can apply as a guild to get into the beta at the moment.

Pity about the delay, but if it makes for a stronger release then thats fine. I'm hoping this one will really challenge WoW while bringing something different to the table with its pvp system. Definitely a game I'll be checking out.

Hopefully Conan makes it out this year so at least I have some alternative to WoW.

As long as they don't up the minimum spec requirement, I don't mind waiting. WoW has still got months of playtime left in it for me.

WAR had better be worth the wait, though...

Zones? Oh no, please tell me its not just another WoW - I was hoping that the venerable Warhammer might be abit more true to the Warhammer world - mainly the old world. Not some fake zoned off bore-fest like WoW.

    /unimpressed

Am I the only one who hasn't got a clue what the above sentence means, if it means anything at all?

    @ hula hoops

    it's not just you...

Darrrnnn I was looking forward to wasting my Christmas holiday with this :(

    Re: zones

In WoW each zone is pretty much completely separate from their neighbours. Different quests, flora, fauna, landscape, etc. Individual zones are pretty small - maybe 1 mile square. You need to suspend your disbelief a bit because you can travel from freezing mountains to fiery gorges in the equivalent of about a half a mile.

At least, I think that's what MGG was talking about :)
