Wada hints at FF Versus XIII on 360

Square Enix "looking into it".

Square Enix appears to be considering Final Fantasy Versus XIII for release on Xbox 360.

The E3 2006 promise of two new Final Fantasy games for PlayStation 3 apparently had small print.

"We'll be looking into it internally until right before the formal announcement," said Yoichi Wada of an Xbox 360 version, speaking to investors following today's annual earnings report (via VG247).

That "formal announcement" could be at E3 next month, although game director Tetsuya Nomura cast doubt on this in February, revealing that Square Enix had decided to revise the game's map.

What we know of FF Versus XIII so far has been gleaned from showy CG cinematics. But with Final Fantasy XIII now out of the door, the PR coast should be clear.

Why does this not surprise me?

Square, like all other companies have loyalty to money not anything else.
  • thefilthandthefury #3 2 years ago

Excellent news - one step closer to the death of the exclusive.
  • Retroid #4 2 years ago

They must've looked at the cash rolling in from a fairly quick'n'dirty 360 FF13 conversation and thought "...hold on!"
  • digoutyoursoul #5 2 years ago

make everything ps3 exclusive, that way the forums and comment sections will be a lot more stable
  • peacefuloutrage #6 2 years ago

I did buy it on the xbox. Well, I was terribly underwhelmed at FFXIII. It was marketed wrong, as it is most certainly a sleep aid. I am forcing myself to finish it just because it is Final Fantasy. I have enjoyed the other Square published games I purchased more, like "Magna Carta 2" and "The Last Remnant".

I have sincerely decided not to have any expectations for vs. XIII so I will not be disappointed.
  • sfp_noodle #7 2 years ago

They've also hinted at FF14 appearing on 360 so in all honesty, I'd be suprised if they decided against making this a multiplatform release. After the abortion that was FF13 though, I'm finding it hard to get excited about any future FF game

Please EG, I can only output so much FF13 hate in a single afternoon.

    Another "exclusive" PS3 game lost.

  • Verminox #10 2 years ago

Win either way for PS3 owners, superior version or exclusive.
  • smilernick #11 2 years ago

I knew this was coming, ever since Microsoft bought their way into FFXIII. To be honest though, if Versus XIII is as crap as that i dont really care.

    "Another "exclusive" PS3 game lost"

Question is, do you even care? Annoys the hell out of me when people say stuff like that because half the time they're not even interested in the game. When MGS was announced on 360, I can guarantee that half the people that were bragging about it said it was shit and that they did not care when it was a Playstation exclusive.

Similarly, if Alan Wake was ever announced on PS3, the same people that absolutely raped it when the DF article was published would suddenly start praising it. What is the point seriously?
  • Acrid #13 2 years ago

    Colour me unsurpriseed
  • freakzilla #14 2 years ago

Its actually very predictable now. If anyone expected it to stay exclusive were dreaming.
  • Shakey_Jake33 #15 2 years ago

More people get to play the game - sounds good to me, I never understand the hostility. No-one's 'losing' a game, more people are gaining out.

For all the (completely justified) critisism of the 360 port of FFXIII, it did grant more people the opportunity to play it.

I'm shocked at a company wanting to make more money! >.>
  • spiritsnake #17 2 years ago

im horrified by this,i dint buy ff13 coz it was a piss poor game,i thot ill wait for the versus 13 since its a ps3 only game then itll be as good as past FF. but if it also goes multiplat then definately itll be as bad as ff13, coz itll be made linear again, low visuals and all that. cmon squeenix dont do that!!!!
  • WinterSnowblind #18 2 years ago

    @smilernick
Yes, MS paid to have XIII come to the 360.
Nothing to do with the development cost being into the millions..
  • T3TSUO #19 2 years ago

Des wrote "Another "exclusive" PS3 game lost. "

You can have this one. FF13 was abysmal and it just highlights how underpowered the 360 really is.
I wouldn't use the "exclusive" card anyway. 360 has next to no exclusives. They're all on PC in a far better state.
My PC\PS3 combo covers ALL gaming needs.
  • ecureuil #20 2 years ago

I think we all knew this was going to happen the moment XIII went multiformat.
  • TWIGishere #21 2 years ago

With all the negative comments this seems a tad selfish but... Result! Good news for me who doesn't own a PS3.
  • GreyBeard #22 2 years ago

I'm honestly doubtful that MS will stump up the cash to get one over on Sony at this point. It can't have made them happy that despite them promoting the hell out of the game its still sold more on PS3 than 360. The sloppy 360 port won't have won SE many fans either.

Sony for their part I doubt could care less. Its not their IP.
  • Widge #23 2 years ago

FUCKPANTS, they're ditching open world so that it can run from DVD /o\
  • Wolverfrog #24 2 years ago

I hope so. I love FFXIII's Universe. What is Versus about, incidentally? The name makes it sound like some sort of multiplayer game.
  • Widge #25 2 years ago

No, its more of a Kingdom Hearts battle system (apparently). The FFXIII games are split:

    Agito - Past
    Versus - Present
    XIII - Future

So Versus focus will be on more of a real world, less futuristic setting. It was meant to be roamable world map, dungeons, summons, party system... all the things people like, however the roamable world map might be getting ditched.
  • M83J01P97 #26 2 years ago

    @Widge:

So you mean it was meant to be a proper FF game and not the souless, eye candy that is XIII...?
  • Slipstream #27 2 years ago

Considering the aformentioned figures, I can't say I'm surprised in the least.
I knew in the back of my mind that if FFXIII sold well on the 360 Versus would soon follow, and considering the games are connected, it makes perfect sense to release the follow up.

Anyone who doubts this is in denial, it's basic really.
  • Wolverfrog #28 2 years ago

Wait, how can Final Fantasy XIII be set in the future when it was the first to be released? Surely Versus is in the past, and Agito is in the ancient past?
  • Scimarad #29 2 years ago

This really should have a different name as it's pretty much going to be an action-rpg from what I gather. I suspect a lot people will be put off by FFXIII when it's not going to be a particularly similar game if KH 1&2 are anything to go by.

  • carrotcake #30 2 years ago

Call it FF XV fools. I read somewhere that it is too different to earn a main number title in the series, not fantasy enough. Bet it would sell more if they changed their minds though. The current title sounds like a spin off and doesn't make sense either
  • NotSoSlim #31 2 years ago

If there is no world map then they can go jump off a cliff. Nomura stated he wants a world map, i have had enough of corridor after corridor after corridor
  • moskiitto #32 2 years ago

XIII-games are not connected in any way, except all of 'em have crystal theme.
XIII, Versus and Agito do not happen in same universe.
  • Razzajazz #33 2 years ago

It's so ridiculous to speculate that XIII did not turn out like the fanboys wanted it because it went multi-platform. Maybe, just maybe, they tried something different, and it didn't quite work out the way you wanted it. It just pisses me off when idiots spout crap like Versus is not going to be any good now it's multi-platform. It's foolish conjecture, and after all these years, it's clear that the gap in power between the two consoles is nowhere near what some people claim it to be.

I'm guessing that this has been a plan for SE for some time, most likely when XIII was first announced for 360, so I'm assuming that the conversion process will be slightly better this time, and the performance gap will be narrower. PS3 version will still be best though, just because it's the lead dev platform.
  • andywilkie35 #34 2 years ago

Really hope the combat is of a more traditional sense. FFXIII had a great system but after playing FFVII and FFVIII again on PSP since, it reminded me that those are the games it should be trying to emulate.
  • mumblyjoe #35 2 years ago

Can't wait for the DF comparisonif it goes multi format....

It'll be along the lines of 'PS3 version looks better but drops 1 fps so buy the 360 version' or 'theres not much of a difference so get the 360 version'

I would concur that PS3 version would still be best, but mainly due to SquareEnix not at the stage of being quite capable of handling multi platform titles that well with Crystal. Look at WASTED dataspace on three disks and also choice of compression!

Furthermore there are growing evidences from other publishers who are now more likely to favours PS3 as a lead platform, for the reasons of the difficulties of achieving reasonable parity between PS3 and X360. As indeed evidences are if PS3 leads then X360 would be done well too, but not other way round.

BUT after FFXIII's failure to set the whole world alight and its being nowt to do with X360 but SquareEnix decisions to 'evolve' RPG along western sensibilities! On that basis I m not so convinced FFXIII Versus would be better meet our expectations?

Still they got the opportunity and if extra time required, in lights of reviews for FFXIII then I hope the game will be better for it.

    @Razzajazz
Beware of that PR bull$h1t of "leading platform" .
PR touted Ghostbusters leading platform as PS3
    [link url=http://talkplaystation.com/ps3-is-lead-platform-for-ghostbusters

And you know how it ended:

Nothing is 100% sure in this world.
  • Collymilad #38 2 years ago

    Sony fanboys are unbelievable.

You don't have some god given right to exclusivity on any game that isn't developed by Sony or one of their studios. Especially not FF or Metal Gear considering neither began on Playstation.

If the free-roaming map does get ditched, it'll be nothing to do with the 360. See Lost Odyssey or Blue Dragon.

As always, cashing in. I wonder how many discs this will be on...
  • BBIAJ #40 2 years ago

    @peacefuloutrage:

Magna Carta 2 was Namco Bandai Games.
  • Widge #41 2 years ago

Yeah, the games aren't connected, but their style is as I described, FFXIII is very futuristic, Versus has a present day setting and Agito is more old world style (think FFIX).
  • Wolverfrog #42 2 years ago

I read that all three of the XIIIs being released are set in the same Universe at different times. Was that incorrect?
  • Kremlik Verified Co-Founder, Crash To Desktop #43 2 years ago

grrr... i bought a ps3 based on the fact VSXIII was only a ps3 title, if kingdom hearts III goes multi now... I'll be having words with SE, I'm getting sick and tried of the 'only for' crud now.

actally I pritty much agree with everyone now, dispite a handful of devs that are still techically 'first party' (RARE, Naughty Dog, Imsomniac, etc), I think we can saftly throw the 'exclusive' tag out the window as the software lists behind both formats are near enough the same now - all thats really the issue now is the systems themselfs and whats on offer with JUST that system
  • geeza2020 #44 2 years ago

why cant they keep a world map? If it was possible on the psone with FF7, 8 and 9, why have they given up ever since? Oh yeah, because Square don't know what the fuck they are doing anymore.
  • Jauffre #45 2 years ago

Hmm ... are they "looking into it" in the same way they've been looking into remaking FF7 for the last godknowshowmany years?
  • Jamiesan #46 2 years ago

Anyone that thinks a 360 port will be the cause of the open world structure being removed is frankly, an idiot. There are tons of games of this nature on the 360. I would go as far as to say that the faster disk read on the DVD drive would be an advantage
  • SpaceMonkey77 #47 2 years ago

I remember back when I got in a tizzy about FF leaving Nintendo home formats. Its much ado about nothing now.

The more people that can play the games (be they good or bad) the better it is financially for Square. That money can be pumped into getting Parasite Eve 3 to me (long overdue, cough cough).
  • Wolverfrog #48 2 years ago

Well, I'm looking forward to Agito, since I have a PSP. Hopefully Versus won't be PS3 exclusive, it seems like it would be a real kick in the groin to give us Final Fantasy XIII's great Universe without letting us experience other aspects of it.
  • mychuma #49 2 years ago

Wtf, if this is coming to Xbox360 and Metal Gear Rising also, my plans for buying a ps3 are seriously thwarted.
