Vol. 2 of SingStar PS3 unveiled

New harmony mode to feature.

Sony has revealed details of the second instalment in the SingStar PS3 series, which is logically titled Volume 2.

The big feature is a new harmony duet mode that allows two players to compliment each other's vocal skills. The disc will feature songs specially chosen for harmonising, such as California Dreamin' by the Mamas and the Papas and We All Stand Together by Paul McCartney and a load of frogs. Plus there's Celebration by Kool and the Gang.

SingStar Vol. 2 will also feature Remote Play support so you can access the game using your PSP and an Internet connection. For example you can browse, select and download songs from the SingStore so there's a tracklist ready when you get home. You can also use your PSP to muck about with My SingStar Online - leaving comments, viewing videos and so on.

In total there will be 30 songs on the disc, including tracks from The Killers, Eminem, Kaiser Chiefs and Gorillaz. It's not known at this point whether any of them will also be released in the SingStore, or whether Vol. 2 will launch with the long awaited wireless mics, or when it's out. But still. The frog song!

For our opinion on the first SingStar PS3, read the review.

thought the point of dlc was to stop the need for loads of disks. Does this mean support for the first one will stop?

Exactly what QPRHOOPS81 said. What happens if you want to play songs off the first one? Is it going to be a case of swapping disks? Do downloaded songs work on both?

I liked the idea of not having to swap disks to have the songs you want. It had better still be the case.

I don't think it means support for the first one will stop, I would assume the singstore would work for both the new disc and the old one. I may be assuming too much here tho...

Roughly 50% of current gen console owners never takes their machine online. The percentage might even be higher in the group that typically buys games like SingStar. So continuing with disk based releases makes sense. I agree with the others though that they should make it possible to play v1 songs within v2 without needing to swap disks.

But will the new songs be available for the first version from the SingStore? Also, will the first version get a patch to enable the harmonising feature?

the thing that worries me is this is Sony. I cant think of any other reason for releasing a second version. Surely with DLC there is no need. Its all a bit to fishy for my liking.

They still need shelf presence in retail outlets, and this lets them do that.

Throw in some new features for the user incentive and some good new tracks, as always with new discs and you've got a new release.

I love SingStar and I don't have a 'problem' with it, if I dont want to buy it, I won't.

Don't forget you may also have people that enjoy going online, but maybe feel a bit iffy buying online. Most the people on my friends list are online non stop, but my brother for instance ventures on much less, but still never buys online (via PS3).

I don't think the first Singstar sold as many as Sony wanted, stores won't give Singstar much shelf space as it is old now. WIth GTA soon and MGS4 in June they will probably help sell the console. I imagine Sony have decided not to remarket the original Singstar and release a new version to pull in the punters.

On a personal note though I hope they patch the original and at least do a bundle download of the new songs or let us pick a nd choose to download what we want. Also Frog Song, GET IN!!!!

I'm guessing that the Vol2. tracks will appear on the Singstore at the same time as the retail release. Probably my only reason for getting this, is if the pack contains wireless mics like the ones shown in the Singstar Vol1 intro video..

If you look at this picture, http://ww w.threespeech.com/blog/wp-conte... it looks like Sony's given up on trying to create wireless mics. It was always going to be tricky to transmit voice data over bluetooth. Even if the mic did analog/digtal conversion, then mp4 compression, there's still a lot of data to be broadcast reliably over BT.

For a "simple" karaoke game, there's a lot of hi-tech stuff in Singstar. Sony has re-compiled some of the Pro-tools plugins to run on PS3.

With any luck there will be an option to buy this over PSN as i'm doubting the extra code will take up much space.

I don't know if it is possible, but could wireless mics transmit by wifi if bluetooth isnt good enough?

"It was always going to be tricky to transmit voice data over bluetooth."

Shit, someone had better inform the mobile phone industry before it's too late!

    @monkie_king

Correction - the amount of data required to transmit 2 separate med quality sound streams.

Voice calls are cut off at around 3000khz
