Why would anyone buy this on the Wii? Surely the core gameplay won't be any different to the Wii Sports tennis we already have? All it'll add is uncanny valley graphics and some tournament rubbish.

Because X360 morons that see an early PS3 Virtua Tennis automatically assume that because online is not an option in the early build it can't be in the final release either.

It's not in the final release. The website is wrong, unfortunately.

They say they are focusing on realness, yet in the videos they have released so far the physics of the ball do not appear to have improved much from the previous game. It still moves in an unrealistic rigid manner and compared to the improvements in physics and ball behavior (lol?) introduced by Top Spin 2 this pains me as I have had high hopes for Virtua Tennis 3 to really raise the bar all around.

I'll still buy it of course, but I am not expecting realism, I am expecting arcade.
