Don't you hate it when game makers gimp certain versions (PC/360) because the other version(s) have no online play? WTF is up with that. Just add the f*cking roster to the other versions Sega... or maybe they do not have the "power" for 10 extra players models?

The "power" for the extra players probably comes in form of downloadable content.

(As much as I like Live!, this should be sarcasm)

"Then it's time to show off the different ways of recuperating: if you're pressed for time, simply sup an energy drink; if you've got a spare week, your player can take it off to have a rest; but if they've been overtraining and has suffered an injury, they'll need to recuperate on vacation (which takes three weeks)."

I hope this is online, and real time.

Hmm I can't believe a game such as this would even come close to filling a DVD, I mean a few tennis courts and character models - its hardly asset central is it? And that's just 360 - on PC this isn't even an issue. Very puzzled as to why the character roster is less on these platforms...

I cannot see how the SIXAXIS controller will add anything to the PS3 version of VT3. It's not like you can comfortably hold it like a real racquet due to its shape or feel the *thunk* of the ball as it bounces off it (since it lacks rumble) unlike the Wii's controller.

In fact, thinking about it, I can't help wishing for a Wii version of VT3 with players that run automatically (like Wii Tennis). I'd gladly sacrifice the hi-def visuals for a game that requires closer-to-real skill to play using the Wii's rather fine remote because Wii Sports has shown how games like tennis should be done. Using a normal controller just doesn't feel the same anymore as I found out when I went back to Top Spin 2. Somehow I'm far less excited about VT3 (despite having pre-ordered it months ago) and more excited about Nintendo announcing Mario Tennis for the Wii...

And gamesTM were less than complimentary about the arcade version of VT3 when they reviewed it last year, giving it just 6/10 and saying that it was somewhat dated with the new game being little more than a hi-def port of VT2 with the same simplistic arcade controls. In other words, that the game hasn't evolved at all. That would be disappointing if it's true as VT2 was undeniably brilliant five years ago on the DC but it's a far less impressive now in my opinion.

"Lets face it online is overrated, Who fancies playing tennis with a bunch of racists and screaming kids?. Atleast with the power of Blu-ray you get 10 more character models, extra content."

Lets face it, sports games are only really fun when you play your mates. Fire up the X360, hop onto Live and play one of your mates online. Magic.

I dread to think how many hours I sunk into Virtua Tennis 2 on the Dreamcast.

Can't wait for VT3 over Live so long as Sega manage not to ruin it like their other games lately.

This is where some good strength in the Wii will lie - they need new developers to take Wii sports and stretch it further, with games like this, George Foreman Boxing etc.

Let's just hope these girls have the brawls to do it and get it released on the wii!

Was the original article reporting less player models in the x360/PC versions? Because it seems to have been updated and now it mentions 20 models on all three versions.

Unsurprisingly then, the usual roster of real-life likenesses will be making an appearance in the game, with 20 real-world players appearing in the PS3, PC and 360 versions [updated - Ed].

Simple question which you've not addressed in the preview - will the xbox360 Live play have a 4 (seperate console) player mode for multiplayer doubles?

4 player Tennis is the most fun you can have as a group game and it still hasn't been done online yet.

Like most of the posters, I can't really see myself buying a non-Wii tennis game having enjoyed Wii Sports. A version of Wii Sports with Virtua's more realistic looks and player rosters, and more complete tournament play would be perfect. Maybe we just have to wait for WiiSports2

On the contrary, even though I've enjoyed many hours playing Wii Tennis and Bowling with my son, I can't hardly wait for this (and Virtua Fighter 5 to be honest). They do offer a different experience on the same subject and both are welcome in my book.

I took up console gaming to spend my free time sitting on the couch, doing something slightly more interactive than just watching TV; I can't be arsed to be standing up, waving my arms like a lunatic all the time :)

@Darren: The game in VT3 hasn't changed that much but it is an evolution of VT2; positioning is even more important now with players who are better at predicting shots having a big advantage. Ping-pong style volley matches you had in VT2 are not as prevalent too due to the greater realism.

@Errol: I think the part of the point of having tennis games and especially a version on Wii is that it allows those who aren't actually any good at sports to feel like they are... ;)

I'm looking forward to this, having played both the first two to death on the DC. I wasn't sure what they could do to VT2 to improve it, but judging by this article, they've managed to.

That said, I winced when I read "though not, crucially, any better, on balance, than using the face buttons (which surely is the point?)". Surely that takes the prize for the most unwieldy sentence ever published on EG? I enjoyed the rest of it though.

Needed on the Wii badly, if Wii Sports Tennis is anything to go by it could be awesome.

I simply cannot go back to using an analogue stick and buttons for tennis now, so as much as I love VT1 and 2, I will be waiting for a Wii Tennis game instead of getting this.

in response to JUST PLAY TENNIS FFS I give you a veritable feast to chow down on...

JUST PLAY FOOTBALL FFS

JUST GO SKATEBOARDING FFS

JUST JOIN YOUR ARMED FORCES FFS

JUST KILL SOME HOOKERS FFS

JUST DRIVE A REAL CAR REALLY FAST FFS

JUST JOIN A ROCK BAND AND PLAY SOME MENTAL GUITAR SOLOS FFS

Here's a freaking news flash for you dunderhead, some people will never be good enough at TENNIS to ever enjoy it. Some people can't afford to stump up the exorbitant monthly fees for the local sports club. Some people DON'T HAVE A FRICKING TENNIS COURT ANYWHERE NEAR THEM! Some people don't fancy fronting a buttload of cash for a tennis racket and shoes so they can repeatedly hit a ball into the net once every two years.

Those SIXAXIS controls sound dreadfully useless. Isn't motion sensing supposed to help with immersion and realism?

How are those controls going to be in anyway natural feeling? Plus, you can never hold a shockless dual shock controller like a bat, raquet, or anything similar for gaming.

I'm waiting to see a PS3 game that will use the sixaxis for anything good.

The sixaxis motion sensing screams 'Tacked On In a Rush'

Go ahead and prove me wrong Sony, with this and your online 'service', and I'll buy your console before the end of the decade.

Strange, because I was watching Steve Jobs' keynote on the iPhone today, and it confirmed more than ever how important the following things are that Sony is completely failing on:

Interface,
Services,
Communication (with your potential buyers to win them over),
Software.

So much of the iPhone's innovations, if Sony were even anywhere near as able to innovate in this way, would have made the PSP a must have - even if we had to go online and pay 'microtransactions' to pick up all of the features.

Just a proper web browser that can actually display an entire webpage. Or that can load a webpage withoout erroring. Sony - I'd PAY EXTRA FOR THIS.

That huge beautiful screen spends too much time looking huge and beautiful, and not doing anything we want it to unless we hack the console.

Also, we might want controls that work properly?!?!?!?!? in games?!?!?!?!?!? How can you even release a handheld with that much power in the 21st century that can't do either Streetfighter or FPS games properly? Come on Sony! Sort It out!

Sony seem to be good at making cool looking and powerful hardware - and that's it.

I guess this is forum material.

I'm confused.

Allen was on hand from Sumo Digital (who are handling the conversions) to stress that the online features (which aren't present on the PS3)

The sega website says that the PS3 verrsion WILL have online play

do you mean that it will have a more stripped down online mode than the Xbox 360?

Because X360 morons that see an early PS3 Virtua Tennis automatically assume that because online is not an option in the early build it can't be in the final release either.
