Vigilante 8 enters XBLA certification News

Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

13 August, 2008

V8: Arcade, the XBLA re-imagining of the Vigilante 8 series, has finally been submitted to Microsoft for certification, which means the game should arrive in late summer or early autumn.

Vigilante 8 started as a spin-off series of Interstate '76, and first appeared in 1998 on PSone and N64, before Dreamcast got in on some sequel action.

Smashing up opposing cars was the plan, using all manner of weaponry tacked on to your 1970s-inspired rides.

Isopod Labs, the developer behind the Live Arcade version, has the original creators onboard to help re-imagine the themes and gameplay from the V8 series, only using much more powerful technology.

This means significantly improved physics and graphics, plus the addition of four-player split-screen play and online battles for up to eight drivers.

Specifically there will be five arenas to dart around, eight cars to write off, and a bunch of classic V8-style personalities to play as, each with unique special weapons.

Vigilante 8: Arcade will cost 800 Microsoft Points, or GBP 6.80 / EUR 9.60 in human money.

Wasn't even aware this was in the works. Kinda enjoyed I '76 and I '82 - never played any V8 game though.

What I want, though, is Carmageddon to come to XBLA. Either that or Carmageddon 2. Or Cannon Fodder, but I doubt that will ever get resurrected.

To hell with vigilante 8, what we need is a new full blown interstate game, or at least a version of I76 which has been mod-di-fied for arcade.

Loved Interstate 76, and I was really looking forward to Full Auto until it dissapeared off the radar and resurfaced as a circuit racer. Whatever happened to the original concept? That was going to be such a great game back when it was first revealed (must have been 1999 or so?)

Bring back I76, that's what I say! Groove Champion ftw! :)

Will definitely check this out.

V8 wasn't bad but (as it seems everyone agrees on) pales in comparison to the awseome I76!

Yeah why couldn't we have had I76 instead, that was truly awesome. I remember Vigilante 8 being a pale imitation with none of the funky soul and character of the original.

Being able to play Vigilante 8 online, something the original didn't have, is one perfectly valid justification for porting over old games from the DC/N64 era IMO.

Vigilante 8 was always the poor cousin to Interstate 76 (the less said about Interstate '82 the better).

Could be alright though. But bet it won't have Groove Champion in it!

I suspect the DLC for this is gonna be a bitch (Shouldn't there be 8 Vigilantes, and 8 coyotes rather than 8 characters?) but ultimately this is exactly the kind of battle-cars game we need on XBLA.

Part of the appeal of V8 was the spazzy physics, which i suppose they'll fix for this version :(

Oh, well - it'll be fun anyway

For the record, this isn't a straight port. It's a completely new version that combines a lot of features, vehicles and levels from the first AND second games.

Vigilante 8 was quite good too, even if it was similar to Twisted Metal in a way.

I'76 is one of the greatest driving games of all time. I love it lots and lots.

Never played the V8 games though, they never had the same appeal for some reason.

@ mcmonkeyplc:

Not really, the site has been up for the last 6 months:

Also:

Original PS1 car models unlockable!

The cat is out of the bag!

As a special treat for the fans of the original games, Isopod Labs is including eight original V8 PS1 car models in V8: Arcade.

The guys labored hard in the labs, converting the original 3D geometry, textures, and removing advanced texture-blending, to ensure that these rare replicas are restored to their authentic old-gen glory.

And, for the ‘history’ buffs, Isopod is proud to unveil the original Piranha — the first vehicle ever built for V8, but never included in the commercial versions of the game. This orange muscle car was based on the ‘Pickard Piranha’ from Interstate ‘76, driven by the character of Jade Champion and later her brother, Groove. The car was dropped early in development, after V8’s design was retooled as an arcade car-combat game.

These ‘Classic’ V8 vehicles can be unlocked by successfully beating the Single Player Quest of each character.
