Vigil not doing DLC for Darksiders

Creator Joe Madureira opens up.

Vigil Games creative boss Joe Madureira has told Eurogamer readers there will be no downloadable content for Darksiders.

Speaking in a live interview ending just moments ago, Madureira apologised and said DLC wasn't part of the plan.

Multiplayer, too, was skipped - and these were decisions Madureira said were hard but necessary to make.

"We realised early on that we wouldn't be able to pull off the scope of game we wanted to and have it be multiplayer," Madureira explained. "We were a new team building new tech and a new IP. We had our work cut out for us.

"Vigil has a very strong all-or-nothing mentality, and if we're not confident we can pull it off, we're not doing it. So we focused on making the most kick-ass single-player game possible."

Aside from hefty and brutal action, Darksiders counts a strong and gripping story among its charms. But Madureira, who's past as a comic artist shines through, said videogames still have a long way to go to catch other mediums - or indeed live up to their own potential.

"Until recently there wasn't that much emphasis on game stories. It's not what sells a game - it's all about the gameplay. Comics still produce fantastic stories, it's still one of the purest visual storytelling mediums, which is why it still makes such an impact," he said.

"The sad fact is, most game stories stink."

Madureira admitted that designing for games rather than comics was "much, much, much harder", however, due to "lots of limitations and considerations". But he's not resentful for taking the plunge.

"It's an exciting industry and I love being a part of it, though of course I do miss comics," he added.

Now Darksiders is finished, Vigil will focus on other internal projects including the Warhammer 40K MMO as well as "a couple other projects on the burner". The studio should be ready to announce the latter later this year.

As for the Warhammer 40K MMO, Madureira hinted that we may see our first glimpses of the project towards the end of 2010.

And finally, unable to dodge the whereabouts of canned comic series Battle Chasers, Madureira offered a ray of light for fans.

"I would love to [finish it] some day," he said. "I am amazed how many people ask me this. It's somehow managed to live in people's minds all these years. I feel like I have to finish it some day."

As a game?

"That would be amazing," he answered. "But I'm so possessive of it, I would demand it be done by Vigil. And we have too much on our plate these days to take on another project. So we'll see!"

Darksiders is out this Friday on PS3 and Xbox 360. And it's very good, as our Darksiders review points out.

good for them. their "all or nothing" approach is something to be applauded - a ray of light in our "leave it out for the DLC" brave new world.

So basically, they had an idea for a game, they made a game and now they're selling the game. As opposed to loads of other games that cut content out of their games or just release them half finished to charge more for the remainder of it.

    Good on Vigil.

Can't wait to play this game, i hardly ever buy DLC anyways.

I dont know why he feels he needs to apologise, I imagine most gamers just want a decent, good sized, fun and enjoyable game. Sure, multiplayer and DLC can be quite nice, but not at the expense of the single player experience.

This is how games used to be made, if making multiplayer would take time away from single player then dont do it. If its a good idea put it into the game, if it needs to be delayed to finish it then do it.

I dont know how it became so common to release games earlier and then sell it in chuncks via DLC. but well done Vigil for making games the way its meant to be done.

I swear it must just be the gaming media that have made this multiplayer/dlc thing so important. I couldn't give two shits about either as long as the game I've bought does what it says on the tin.

When did either of these things become an issue for games that aren't designed around them from step 1? This isn't Team Fortress 2, ffs.

Now I'm even more inclined to pick this up.

Not a big deal, I don't think the gameplay would translate well to mutliplayer and from what I heard it's a decent length game anyway (over 15 hours I think I saw mentioned somewhere).

    Just start making a 2 instead:D

I'm quite impressed by it 6 hours in, really opening up.

This game is filled with variety, it doesn't need any DLC.

It's a breath of fresh air to not see multiplayer tacked onto a game. Although I am very SP minded other than the brilliant use of online play in Demon's Souls, L4D and the occasional delve into Halo 3, MW2 and UC2 if I have nothing better to do!

I really want this game now! And no DLC is definitely a good thing imo...

As stated above, this is brilliant news.

Take note developers, DLC should be intergrated via demand and success and not as a pre-production money spinner.

If Darksiders offers a complete and satisfying experience then good for you Mr Madueira. Judging by the reviews I don't doubt this.

Finally, a game I can trade in after I finish it.

"But Madureira, who's past as a comic artist"

You are now on The Apostrophe Protection Society hit list.
