Lance Vance

In his push to be one of Vice City's key players, wide-eyed Lance stirs up a world of shit for you to wade through. Most of your time on the second island is spend bailing him out of trouble. You'll usually find him lazing about in his Ocean Beach apartment, talking big but generally doing bugger all.

Brawn of the Dead

Your brother Lance has found a buyer for the coke - a film director called Spitz who's shooting a cheapo zombie movie at the Vice Point Mall. Drive to the mall quickly (you've got two game hours to get there) and let Lance do the talking while you turn stuntman for the day. There are two scenes to complete. In the first you must keep blasting zombies with a shotgun, ensuring that the gore quota is satisfied. Then you have to defend a shop doorway, using a katana sword to chop down the zombie army. When the clock hits zero, filming will stop and the mission ends.

Blitzkrieg

Before this mission begins you must have taken over five or more businesses. You'll already own at least three (thanks to completing Louise's last mission), so if you've yet to expand your empire further, now is the time to do it. To take over a business, destroy the vehicle parked outside to kick things off, then deal with the gang members who come outside to greet you. Finally, enter the building and smash up the merchandise. Now press up on the d-pad and the business will belong to you. When you own five businesses, go and see Lance at his place. He'll tell you that gangs are trying to reclaim their businesses. Drive to the business that's flashing on the map and mow down as many gang members as possible (just make sure you don't hit Lance). When your vehicle is wrecked, get out and continue the fight on foot. More gang members will arrive in cars - defeat them all to finally thwart the attackers. With your empire intact, you'll be invited to meet up with the Mendez brothers.

Turn On, Tune In, Bug Out

The DEA has bugged Lance's pad. You need to destroy several transmitters before the authorities can obtain crucial evidence. Drive to the Ammu-Nation store and take the rocket launcher that Lance has reserved for you. If you have the money available, you should definitely by some extra rockets as a precautionary measure. Drive to the police station in Washington Beach and climb the steps to reach the roof. There are two transmitters here - destroy them both with rockets. A couple of cops will appear next to the police helicopter on the roof. Don't shoot them with your rocket launcher as you will probably hit the chopper and this mission is impossible without it. Kill the cops with your usual gun, then fly to the police station in Little Havana and take out two further transmitters. You'll now have four stars and most probably a police helicopter hovering above your head. Bring the chopper down with a couple of well-placed rockets, then fly to the downtown police station. The roof will be swarming with cops when you arrive so shoot them first before hitting the final two transmitters. You now need to clear your wanted stars. The easiest way is to fly the short distance to the Little Haiti Pay 'n' Spray. A little further south you'll find a motorbike parked outside a furniture store. Swoop down low and bail out of the chopper, then jump on the bike and pull into the Pay 'n' Spray. You can now continue with Reni's missions.

Taking the Fall

1

Flaunting your violation of protective headgear laws merely cements your bad-boy reputation

Someone's stealing your coke and Lance tells you that it must be the bikers. Get in the helicopter and use the map to hone in on the biker gang. Lance is sitting on the right of the chopper, so fly to the left of the bikers. You also need to keep the chopper level (watch the 'balance' meter) so that Lance can get a decent shot. There are three more biker groups to deal with - two on a building site and the final one on top of a partially-constructed building. A cutscene then plays in which a biker blasts the chopper out of the sky. When you regain control your next job is to rescue Lance. Shoot the bikers dotted around the site, then use the scaffolding to enter an upper level of the building. There are many more bikers inside, standing between you and your brother. Fight your way through the room, using the pillars to shield you from their shots. When the room is clear, go and speak to Lance to complete the mission.

White Lies

You find out where all the missing coke has being going - Lance and Louise have been helping themselves, and now your brother has had a face full and flipped out. He’s climbed in a chopper and started dropping drug packages all over the southern tip of Ocean Beach. Get in the hovercraft and follow Lance over land and sea, collecting as many packages as you can (he drops 30 packages in total and if you miss more than five you'll fail the mission). To make things more difficult, the packages disappear after around five seconds so you'll need to follow the chopper closely. As with the jet-ski earlier in the game, it's much easier to control the hovercraft using the d-pad rather than the analog stick. Collect at least 25 packages to finish the task.

Where it Hurts Most

Louise phones and tells you that Martinez is following her. Head to the burger bar in Little Haiti to pick her up, but it's too late - she's driven away in a car when you arrive. You now need to find her and three possible downtown locations appear on the map. Drive to the closest location first - she is never at this location, but you must check. As soon as a message confirms that she is not there, ignore the gang members and drive to the next closest location. Louise might be here - it's random. If she is, kill Martinez's men and get in the car in which she's being held. If not, drive to the third and final location where you'll definitely find her. Once you're in the car with Louise, drive her directly to the hospital before her life slips away. That's Lance's last mission for a while - go and see Reni for your next job.

Blitzkrieg Strikes Back

After you've completed the Burning Bridges mission for the Mendez brothers, Lance tells you that three of your businesses are under attack. (Note that you must own at least seven businesses to trigger this mission, so if you only have six - the minimum you can possibly have at this stage - you'll need to take control of another business first). Drive to the first location and stop so that Lance can get out. Let your brother blast the enemies while you run them down in your vehicle. Drive past the business, hitting as many as you can, then spin 180 and pick off any you missed - just make sure you don't accidentally hit Lance! Use the same trick to defend the two other businesses and the mission will be complete with minutes to spare.

Lost and Found

Go and pick up Louise from the hospital downtown. As soon as you meet her you get an urgent message from your brother - he's someone managed to get stuck in a burning building. Luckily there's a handy chopper on the hospital roof. As you approach the high-rise by air, Louise will point out Lance standing on the roof. You've now got 30 seconds to hover over the marker and pick him up. When he's onboard you find out that Martinez is trying to ship your cash out of Vice City. There are three boats heading around Vice Point - track them from behind and swoop down low so that Lance can pick off those onboard. This is very similar to the Taking the Fall mission in that you must keep the chopper level so that Lance can get a good shot. Note that if you hit the driver the boat will stop, but there may still be enemies onboard. Having killed them all, hover over the biggest boat and let Lance grab the money. Now drop Louise off at her sister’s apartment to wrap things up.

Light My Pyre

Before starting this mission - perhaps the toughest mission in the game - go to the Ammu-nation shop in the Vice Point Mall and buy a mini-gun. You should also have a sub-machinegun, an assault rifle and full armour. Armando has kidnapped Louise and is holding her at his mansion on Prawn Mansion. Lance goes crazy and screeches off on a bike, leaving you standing outside his apartment. You need a motorbike, but it's very unlikely one will be passing, so jack any vehicle and head one block east where you'll always find a bike parked outside a cafe. Follow Lance - he's involved in a shootout with Mendez's men on the way to the mansion. Unaided, his health diminishes amazingly quickly, making this a very tough challenge. There is a trick you can use however. Part of the problem is trying to shoot the enemy car without hitting Lance, so get as close to the bumper of the car as possible, and hold down the fire button until the car ignites. Now chase the next car and repeat this trick until Lance reaches the Prawn Island bridge. Approach the mansion on foot and gun down the enemies in the street. There's are a couple of cars blocking the driveway - hit the engines to make them explode, then run around to the left of the house. Enemies will spawn indefinitely in this area so don't bother trying to take them on. Instead, just dash to the door at the rear of the house, shooting only those that stand in your way. Once inside the house, Armando will attempt to attack you with a flamethrower. If you heeded our sound advice and brought a mini-gun to the party, you can drop him in less than a second. If you foolishly forged ahead on your own, you'll have to run around the outside of the room to avoid the flames, stopping every few seconds to shoot Armando until he falls. Now head over to Diaz's mansion to attempt the penultimate mission, Over the Top.

Where to next?

Armando and Diego Mendez

The Mendez brothers are fighting it out with Ricardo Diaz for control of the Vice City drugs trade. You're forced to side with Armando and Diego because you accidentally 'acquired' one of their coke shipments. They're running things from their Prawn Island mansion - the 'M' symbol marks the spot.

Mugshot Longshot

Armando knows that you robbed their coke and he's looking for payback. Lance has the bright idea of placing Martinez in the firing line, but to make this work you'll need photographic evidence of the sergeant giving information to a DEA agent. Drive to the police station in Washington Beach and tail Martinez. When prompted, get out of your vehicle and take a picture of Martinez and the agent - you'll need to zoom in fully to get a good shot. Follow the pair to the pier (keep your distance to avoid being spotted) and take a second photo. With the evidence in hand, you'll suddenly receive a four star wanted level. Drive the short distance to Lance's place, then lose the heat at the nearby Pay'n' Spray. Finish the mission by meeting up with Lance in Little Havana.

Hostile Takeover

Short and sweet this one. Armando wants you to shake-up a biker-run business. Get yourself some armour and an automatic weapon (a submachine-gun at the very least) and drive to the drug den. In the usual fashion, run over as many enemies as you can until your vehicle is trashed, then get out and finish off the rest (don't miss those perched on the roof). When you've taken over the site, chase down and kill the four fleeing bikers to complete the mission.

Unfriendly Competition

In what's easily the toughest mission you've faced so far, the Mendez brothers want you to kill some competing drug dealers. The first hit is easy - gun down the small number of enemies lounging by the poolside bar. The second hit is much more difficult, because he's guarded by dozens of gun-toting bikini bitches! Upon arriving at the hotel, quickly jump into the empty swimming pool to avoid the heaviest of the fire. From down here you can easily pick off the women nearest the pool's edge. They continually spawn so stay in the pool until you run out of targets, then climb out at the shallow end and take cover behind one of the trees. Gun down the remaining girls, using your radar to identify their position. When the female firing squad is no more, the target will take off on a quad bike. Run down the wooden ramp and get on the stationary quad. As you give chase, a girl on the back of the quad will thrown grenades at you. There's little point in trying to dodge them, so get up as close as you can and open fire with your sub-machinegun. When the girl is dead, you can wear down the target's energy in no time at all. Mission complete - and relief all round.

High Wire

The brothers want you to reclaim some of their coke. Trouble is, it has been seized by customs so you'll need to use a helicopter to airlift the impounded containers. Drive to Little Haiti and jump in the chopper. Take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with the controls. The trick to flying, especially during timed missions, is to master steady forward movement. Once you have gained sufficient height, press down on the d-pad to centre the camera directly behind, then accelerate while tilting the analog stick gently forward. The trick is to hit that sweet spot when the chopper is tilted far enough forward to achieve maximum speed without losing height. The first container is easy to collect because it's sitting static in the impound yard, but the second is more of a challenge because it's on the back of a moving truck. It can be difficult to judge your height when flying low, so look for the shadow that the magnet makes on the road to work out your position. You need to grab the container before the truck reaches the police station, but don't panic - If you swoop in like Stringfellow Hawk you'll surely hit a tree or lamp post and crash the chopper. Slowly lower the magnet onto the container and lift it free. Next, go and save Diego from the bikers using the same gently-gently approach. Lower his vehicle onto the car park roof to finish the mission. The final Mendez mission becomes available when you complete Farewell to Arms for Diaz.

Burning Bridges

A botched execution attempt leaves you standing in a blazing fuel refinery with Lance trapped behind a wall of fire. You have no weapons, so start by running up the nearby ramp and grabbing a pistol. Run down the steps on the left and kill the guards. Grab their guns and work your way through the refinery, shooting the guards and shutting off the valves as instructed. On shooting the third and final value, the fuel supply will stop and the flames will die down. You've now got just a few seconds to jump on the parked up motorbike, pick up Lance and clear the scene before an explosion rips the refinery apart. Mission complete.

Where to next?

Gonzalez

Gonzalez works for Colonel Cortez, a character you'll no doubt remember from the original Vice City. You're introduced to him as Reni's supplier, but you soon discover that he's audaciously skimming off Diaz's drug supply. Gonzalez appears in several places - look for the 'G' symbol on the map.

Home's on the Range

Having completed Rene's Say Cheese mission you get to meet up with greasy Gonzalez at the Leak Links golf club. Gonzalez believes that the way a man plays golf says a lot about him, so he wants to see how your swing sizes up before you do any further business. He's tied a traitor to a buoy floating in the water - the idea is to hit the target with your shot. To get the desired power and aim, stop the moving yellow bar inside the green areas. Hit them both and your shot will smash the target, completing this easy mission. This opens up the Driving Range pastime in which you can earn some easy money.

Purple Haze

Gonzalez wants you to deliver some drugs on his behalf. Hey ho, off you go to a garage in Ocean Beach where you'll find a van full of coke. When you arrive at the exchange point, a truck rams into you and some yuppies make off with the goods. Vic wakes up in a cloud of coke - the drug makes his vision all bright and blurry. Run - or rather stumble - to the nearby public phone to report the situation to Gonzalez, then jump on the bike parked around the corner. The drugs make for a wild ride and you'll need to fight with the controls just to keep going in a straight line. When you get to the party it really helps if you have a sniper rifle. The effects of the coke slows everything down, just like an adrenaline shot, allowing you to pick them off with ease. When prompted, reclaim the van and drive it back to the garage. The drug effects are now worse than ever, and you'll also have a two star wanted level to compound matters. Concentrate on keeping a straight line rather than worrying about the cops and you'll be fine. Gonzalez's final mission is only available after completing The Exchange for Ricardo Diaz.

Farewell to Arms

2

Jet-skis. Who wouldn't?

This is a straight-up balls-to-the-wall shooting mission. Gonzalez is attempting to fly a shipment of weapons out of Vice City and it's your job to ensure Sharks gang members don't crash the party. Armed with a powerful mini-gun, you must first defend Gonzalez's truck as it makes its way to the airport. Rather than spraying bullets around, concentrate on each enemy vehicle until it explodes - hold down the left trigger to steady your aim. Use the radar to identify roadblocks up ahead and try to clear these before the truck arrives (destroy the vehicle in the centre of the roadblock first as the explosion will blast the other vehicles out of the way). When Gonzalez makes it to the airport you need to first defend the gates, then take care of the Sharks who chase the plane down the runway. Due to the speed of this final chase, trying to target the enemy vehicles is far from easy, but thankfully you don't need to destroy them all for the plane to make a successful getaway. You can now attempt the final Mendez mission, Burning Bridges.

Where to next?

Reni Wassulmaier

Confused commercial producer Reni has a serious coke habit and is therefore well known by all the main dealers in Vice City. His missions range from the sublime to the ridiculous, and you'll always find him working (it hard) at the film studio on Prawn Island.

Accidents Will Happen

Reni is looking for someone with silky driving skills to star in his latest TV ad. A special stunt car is provided which is almost invincible - ideal as you need to race through a series of checkpoints at high speed, smashing specially-rigged cars out of the way. You don't need to hit every car - just enough to keep the action meter from draining completely. The scene ends when you hit the final checkpoint and crash into an apartment block.

The Colonel's Coke

Reni's supplier, Gonzalez, is moving some coke to Viceport by boat. Your job is to protect the boat from the air. Thankfully, a couple of Gonzalez's men travel with you in the Sea Sparrow, enabling you to concentrate on flying the chopper. Get close to the enemy boats and let the men do the rest - there really is no need to waste time trying to hit the boats with the Sparrow's onboard guns. When you reach the docks, an enemy helicopter will attack. Again, get in close and let the razor-sharp shooters in the back deal with the threat. Finish off a few more boats and the mission will finish.

Kill Phil

Reni introduces you to Barry, a manager in the music business who needs your help. He's squandered a few million quid and his debtors are threatening to kill his star act if he doesn't pay up. It's your job to transfer Barry's client safely to his hotel. Go and pick up the bullet-proof limo then head to the meeting location. A chopper will land and Phil will step out - Phil as in 80's popster Phil Collins. A gang suddenly ambushes the balding drummer, so quickly grab your gun and return fire. When you've dealt with them, get in the limo and drive Phil to his luxury Ocean Beach hotel. You'll be attacked by a couple of cars on the way but the limo is bullet-proof so there's very little to worry about. The vehicle is not indestructible however and you can still wreck it if you smash it about enough.

Say Cheese

Having impressed Reni with your silky driving skills he asks you to stand in as stuntman on his latest project. This scene begins with a jet-ski chase - find the jet-ski moored behind the studio and proceed through the markers. The jet-ski controls are extremely sensitive, so if you use the analog stick we recommend you pause the game and select the d-pad instead. With the d-pad it's much easier to make slight steering adjustments. There are several jumps along the route and you need to hit these at a decent speed otherwise you'll end up grounded. As soon as you hit the final ramp, jump off the jet-ski in mid-air and you'll land right next to a PCJ-600. That's handy. Get on the bike and race through the checkpoints. Providing you didn't mess up while on the jet-ski you'll have loads of time to reach the final marker and claim your pay cheque. That's Reni's last mission for a short while. Your next appointment is with Gonzales.

Kill Phil (Part 2)

It's time to protect Phil again. You just need a decent gun and some armour - no jacket required. The pint-sized singer is arriving for a sound check in around five games hours, by which time you must have swept the stadium and dealt with any security threats. Get there as fast as you can and head to the main entrance. Once inside you'll see a gang member kill a cop. Kill the cop killer then jump on the BMX leaned up against the wall. Ride to each of the markers on the map and shoot the enemy gangs. At one point you will need to jump off the bike and run up the steps to the stage where you'll find several more enemies. When you reach the final marker, one of the thugs will drop a key card for the basement. Back track to the basement door and blast the dozen or so guards lurking inside. Job done - Diaz's mission strand is now open, starting with Steal the Deal.

So Long Schlong

Mendez wants Reni dead for recommending your services to Diaz. Panicking, Reni heads to the hospital for an emergency sex change op while you act as a decoy at the film studio. Mendez's men will pour through the studio gates in search of the producer. The idea is to prevent the enemies from entering the buildings and discovering that Reni has escaped. Stand in the middle of the lot and pick off the men as they approach the hangers. After a short while, Reni will page you with an update. He's been surrounded by Mendez's men. Get in a vehicle and go and rescue him before his health is depleted. When Reni is safe in the car you can drive him to the hospital. A couple of cars will give chase but they're easy enough to shake providing you plan your route first. Now go and complete Diaz's Domo Arigato Domestoboto mission before returning to Reni.

In the Air Tonight

Drop Reni off at the airport (she is heading to Europe), then go and meet up with Barry at the stadium. As Phil is about to take to the stage, some guys are attempting to bring the lighting rig crashing down on the singer's shiny head. Keep an eye on your radar and as soon as a red dot appears, run towards it and beat the guy before he can saw through the cable. Don't worry if he does manage to cut the cable as there are four more left. After a brief interlude, in which Phil performs on stage, more men will attempt to finish the job. Keep on your toes, watching the radar at all times, and you'll soon be able to sit back and watch the remainder of Phil's show. This is more of an extended cutscene than a proper mission, but it's extremely well done. Enjoy!

Where to next?

Ricardo Diaz

Diaz is an infamous figure in the Vice City underworld, having built his drug smuggling business into a powerful empire. With your help he hopes to topple the Mendez brothers and become the city's coke king. He lives in the large mansion on Starfish Island.

Steal the Deal

Diaz wants you to follow one of Gonzalez's men in the hope that he leads you to the stolen drugs. You'll find the man exiting the strip club in Ocean Beach. Follow him first by car, then on a jet-ski, staying at a safe distance so you don't get spotted. After a lengthy chase you'll arrive at a wooden structure floating off the south tip of Ocean Beach. The drugs have been stashed on a boat here and the place is swarming with guards. Start by destroying the patrolling boats - you can do this on your jet-ski using your sub-machinegun. Then climb onto the structure and kill all the guards. Make sure you get them all, otherwise they'll blast the boat as you try to escape and the mission will fail. Finish by dropping the boat off at Diaz's dock.

The Exchange

You're sent to do a deal with the DEA on Diaz's behalf. However, when you arrive at the meeting point to make the exchange, Gonzalez's men open fire. There are several of them perched on surrounding buildings - run forward and grab the sniper rifle, then zoom in fully and start to pick them off one-by-one. When you locate a target (use the pink arrows floating around the scoped view to locate them quickly), hold the left trigger to steady your aim. The sniper rifle is a one-hit-kill weapon, meaning that even a shot in the leg will finish them off. A couple of the enemies are hiding on a building just around to the right, so you will need to reposition yourself to locate them. When they're all dead, jump in the weapons truck and take it to Diaz. You can now attempt Gonzalez's last mission, Farewell to Arms.

Domo Arigato Domestoboto

Diaz wants you to bankrupt Armando Mendez by destroying all of his bearer bonds. Trouble is, the bonds are locked in a safe inside his mansion. Drive to Prawn Island and climb into the van parked outside the Mendez place. Ingeniously, you take remote control of Armando's Domestoboto, a comedy robot that does chores around the house. Mendez will bark orders, such as clean a certain room or fetch something for him. Using the left and right triggers you can switch between the robot's various functions - cleaning brush, grabbing arm and so on. As soon as you've completed the first job you can get to work on the safe. Go down into the basement (the basement steps are located in the store room on the ground floor) and you'll find the safe up against the far wall. Enter the code using trial and error (the correct code is 8423, to save you struggling), then switch to the lighter arm and set fire to the bonds. Mission complete.

Over the Top

Armando is dead but his brother Diego is still running the Mendez empire. Diaz suggests that you acquire some serious weaponry to take him down. Go and pick up old friend Phil Cassidy and drive him to the Fort Baxter army base. Phil creates an explosive diversion, enabling you to enter the base by jumping on the small structure next to the wall. Once inside you're advised to avoid the search lights, but it's practically impossible to get in unnoticed so just sprint to the administration building, shooting any soldiers that cross your path. Once inside, kill a couple of guys guarding the hallway before locating the control room. Flip the switch to unlock the gate, then go back outside and run to the Hunter helicopter before it takes off. Don't waste time and ammo shooting each and every guard - just get to the chopper as quickly as you can. Once inside, take off and clear the army base before the guards in the watchtowers can bring it down with their heavy gunfire. To mission ends when you land the Hunter on the roof of Diaz's mansion.

Last Stand

This is it, the final mission. With a Hunter at your disposal, it's time to bring the Mendez empire crashing down. Climb in the chopper and fly to the Mendez building downtown. The upper level is swarming with enemies, some of which are armed with rocket launchers. If the warning "Missile Lock" flashes onscreen, quickly pull back sharply to avoid a direct hit. Thankfully, the Hunter's missiles have better range than the rocket launchers, allowing you to hover at a safe distance and fire continually into the upper floors. Once attacked, the surviving enemies will flee to the other side of the building so you'll need to keep circling to get them all. Following a cutscene you'll find yourself on the roof of the building. Grab the rocket launcher and top up your armour before entering the stairwell. You must fight your way through two floors that are swarming with enemies. Advance slowly, using walls, pillars, filing cabinets and just about anything else available as cover. When you've cleared the second floor, an enemy helicopter will appear outside the building. Quickly run to the window and fire a rocket directly at it. The chopper will spin out of control, at which point more enemies will run into the room. Deal with them, then wait for the helicopter to return. Hit it with a second rocket and it'll crash and burn. Now return to the roof where you'll find both Mendez and Martinez. Despite the double threat, these guys drop surprisingly easily under machinegun or AK fire. If you have a mini-gun then this final battle is over in seconds. The credits roll and you're now free to chip away at the 70-odd per cent of the game you've yet to complete. Go to the next page to discover all the good stuff you can unlock...
