Vanguard: SoH out now News

PC MMO News by Robert Purchese

30 January, 2007

Sigil Games Online's long awaited fantasy adventure Vanguard: Saga of Heroes has launched simultaneously today across Europe and the US.

For the cost of the game and a monthly subscription of GBP 9.49 you can immerse yourself in the world of Telon, a land of "no boundaries," according to the developer, where you'll choose from 19 different races and 15 individual professions.

It's a traditional MMO in many senses, built on a level-based foundation with mounts to ride, ships to sail, and houses to erect.

However, it does seek to add a layer of depth that other well-known games seemingly don't offer, expanding its crafting and trading system to give countless options to whittle away at your spare-time.

We'll be giving you our verdict on Sigil's efforts soon. Meanwhile you can catch up with out recent impressions elsewhere on the site.

From a developer on the FoH boards regarding European server issues (yes people have been playing on them before the game was officially released):

"The servers for Europe are actually in Europe, (Amsterdam I believe), which is both good and bad. Good, because players will get better ping, and eventually better support. The bad right now is that we can not physically troubleshoot the issues and have resorted to massive conference calls with all salient parties.

Pre-Order numbers in the EU so far have been far greater than anticipated and we are already in discussions concering having more servers available as the need arises. Hang in there!"

"Telon opens up"

Not for me at nearly 10 quid it doesn't. And definatly not in the state i last saw it in. Don't get me wrong, i am still interested in the game and will take a look how its has shaped up in a few months, but i'm not ready for THAT commitment just yet.

It'll be interesting to see what you have to say in the review, though.

When did you play it last?

I played till the last day of beta and the improvement was astonishing. They really turned it around. It was still far from perfect, but I can now see why they could have released it at that stage.

£9.49 a month... Can anyone remind me what WoW monthly cost is? (assuming you pay one month at a time)

I'm really tempted to get into an MMO of some sort again... My reasoning is that the major pro is that I will drink/go out less and thereby save money. The con is that I will drink and go out less :/

WoW is £8.99 a month if I remember correctly from my time in Azeroth.

Yeah ok, the games launched, you've gotten your money or whatever for pimping them constantly, can you stop it now?

It's pretty good so far, but server performance and game performance overall is poor, the framerate is low even when the graphics are not too hot, there are lots of memory leaks, crashes to the desktop every 10/15 minutes for most users and even some of my first Blue screen crashes in Windows Vista after 2 months of use!

Some of my friends were in Beta and decided to keep playing. Bought it today and messed about with it for a few hours. Have to say that I'm enjoying it so far. It's a bit laggy, but nothing that makes it unplayable. Mates said the improvements over the last few weeks are quite something. They'll continue to patch it and improve it, so keeping my fingers crossed that it turns into something special. First impressions: promising.

Oh yeah, we couldn't be arsed trying to get onto the Euro server (although I understand they have added another) so we're playing on a US server - just like my old EQ days! :)

I'm sorry to say that I really didn't like the beta version of this (the version that was out like.. a week ago). It was generic, ugly (yes, it was!) and thoroughly boring.

But I'm willing to give it another shot if they've improved it immensely after I stopped playing. Bring on the review!
