Valve patches Left 4 Dead PC News

PC Xbox 360 News by Robert Purchese

15 January, 2009

Valve has rolled out a hulking PC patch for Left 4 Dead that puts right a host of exploits and further tweaks the acclaimed co-op shooter.

The update is applied automatically through Steam. Valve plans to offer the same fix for Xbox 360 "in the coming weeks".

Of the changes (listed below), the "increased chance of getting the Tank or Witch" during Versus game modes scares us, especially as both will now spawn "directly on the escape route".

"Kill" and "explode" client commands have importantly been cheat protected during Versus matches, and crafty players can no longer spawn Infected bots or run away and teleport back to regain health.

Elsewhere there are nips and tucks for each of the Hunter, Smoker, Tank and Witch Infected types, plus overall loading times have been improved.

The full patch notes can be found below.

General

  • Fixed Survivors being able to climb surfaces marked for versus infected only.
  • Fixed a class of SurvivorBot bugs dealing with rescuing downed players.
  • Players can no longer grab ladders while flying through the air after a Tank punch.
  • Shooting near a car with an alarm that has already fired the alarm will no longer make chirping noises.
  • Improved loading time.
  • Fixed mini-gun physics exploit.
  • Fixed propane tanks (and other physics objects) causing players to fall through elevators.
  • Fixed rare achievement bug issues.
  • Fixed several map exploits.
  • Fixed various match making issues.
  • Fixed NAT traversal issues.

Versus Changes

  • Added HUD elements to show status of other infected players.
  • Changed color of infected player name in chat to red.
  • Fixed exploit where players could spawn infected bots
  • Fixed instance where a Survivor changing to the infected team would be attacked by infected bots.
  • Normalized special infected melee damage.
  • Made the following client commands cheat protected: "Kill" and "explode".
  • Fixed exploit where infected players could run away and teleport back to gain health.
  • Players can only change teams once per map.
  • Players can't change teams while other players are still loading.
  • Tank spawns at the same % through the map for both teams in versus mode.
  • Made the Tank and Witch spawn directly on the escape route.
  • Increased chance of getting the Tank or Witch.
  • Fixed team swap issue.

Hunter

  • Easier to pounce a Survivor who is meleeing.
  • Increased Minimum damage a Hunter pounce does.

Smoker

  • Fixed Smoker tongue tolerance.
  • Smoker now has to be killed or the tongue destroyed for the tongue to break.
  • Survivor's cannot bash someone off the tongue until the Survivor being pulled is paralyzed or hanging
  • Tongue attacks that fail to paralyze or hang a Survivor will use the shorter ability delay timer.
  • Fixed cases where the ability timer was not using the correct time.
  • Fixed case where you could point at a Survivor but not register a tongue hit
  • Fixed Smoker tongue not targeting and landing properly through PZ ghosts.
  • Smoker tongue does damage every second while dragging paralyzed Survivors.

Tank

  • Bashable objects now appear with a red glow.
  • Tanks hitting a car with an alarm disables the alarm permanently.
  • Tank frustration timer is only reset by hitting Survivors with rocks or fists.
  • Reduced autoshotgun damage against Tanks.

Witch

  • Witch spawns at the same % through the map for both teams.
  • Avoids spawning within a certain % of the tank.
  • Fixed an exploit where the Witch could be woken up and tricked into attacking Survivors.

Man I didn't know half these exploits existed. Time to make the most of them on the 360 while they're still hot!

hopefully this will be out for the 360 before the comp starts, the increased chance of getting a tank and the reduced damage the auto shotgun does will spice things up online but still no mention when the dlc is out.

Some of these are awesome, awesome changes.

Can only hope 'in the coming weeks' doesn't mean, like, 'late May'.

I find this one worrying. It's going to be inevitable that people will be pulled off the No Mercy Finale roof or the gas station roof before someone can melee them free.

The rest seem like good additions.

You can still shoot the tongue; so you don't have to wait until they're pulled off or paralysed. Will make a smoker hiding behind a witch even more dangerous though; you will HAVE to shoot in her direction to free the drag :D

so are they going to stop infected blocking the elevator or not? and what about smoker instant kills?
as for more tanks i think there should be an option to have none as they can be a bit of a game breaker they should call the option
TANKS but NO TANKS!

You mean smoker suicides to act as a smoke bomb? It is a bit against Queensbury Rules from my perspective - but maybe now Valve have beefed him up people will try to use him as intended.

Lobby system works pretty damn well I think. On the 360 at least. Wayyyy better than Halo 3's for instance imo.

I'm loving the updates.

I agree with Tomo, there is nothing wrong with the lobby on the 360 version.

Shorter infected spawn times may have been a good idea.

I'm really looking forward to getting this update for the 360- asap please Valve! Sounds like the smoker in particular could be much better to use. I am poor to so-so with it currently, and there's nothing worse than dragging someone for a fair distance and getting no or a little damage for it. Or someone freeing them so easily.

Melee effecting Hunter pounces less will be good too. Too often you leap from their side or they happen to turn at the right moment and can get rid of you by melee all too easily. Also liking reduced auto-shotty damage on tanks, last night a fairly damaged team absolutely destroyed our guy as the tank with them in mere seconds.

dan:solo it's fairly easy to get the forklift in the elevator cleared on the top floor of no mercy, and the other one gets moved to block a passageway/doorframe on that level can be jumed over. Or perhaps this one that that i've just not encountered yet? The one by the sewers is pretty cheap though IMO. I *must* remember to carry a gas canister and a pipe bomb next time on that level.........

Having played a bit today, the one change that doesn't sit well with me is the consistent tank and witch locations. Every time I played the team who were the survivors second knew when and where each was coming and were able to better plan, and on one occasion this actually led to them being able to hide in vents well in advance of the tank reaching them and kill him pretty easily.

I suppose when everyone learns those kinds of tricks then it'll be somewhat level, but it seems to me like it's just caused problems in a different area rather than solving them.

You do still have the option of simply shooting and killing the smoker, it just means that you can't melee-spam to render them useless. The smoker is supposed to break the survivors up, to disrupt their formations but at the moment the survivor team pretty much has to be asleep for smokers to have a chance of doing that, particularly in the finales or set pieces where the smoker should be most useful. One of the "best" options for survivors in finales is to simply form a square in a corner and for two or three of them to melee-spam constantly, it's boring and borderline exploitative but it works very well and it shouldn't (IMHO).

I just hope that these fixes mean that the tongue won't break whenever the survivor is dragged past an object like a dustbin or a fast food carton. That kinda nonsense is just ridiculously frustrating to me: someone Boomers three survivors so you quickly grab the unslimed one, expecting to have some delicious, delicious, brain-based snacks while none of his friends can even see you and then he escapes because there was a plastic shopping bag or some other random trash in the middle of the corridor. Then he shoots you in the face. Lots. Then you wait 20 something seconds to respawn.

@Mogs

Agreed, it's the worst sack of crap multi-player system I've seen on PC. Fixing it should be a priority. I'm glad it works well on the 360 but dear God it's painful and bafflingly useless on PC. Unable to find servers or picking servers in outer Mongolia when there are plenty of perfectly good, fast servers free in our Steam groups.

Hell, just give us the option of using the standard server browser from TF2, CS, CS:S, DoD:S and just about every other Source game and give the lobby leader the ability to select a server from that browser or his favourites and I'd be delighted with it.

"If you want the traditional server browser you can now access it via the developer console. In the menu access Options, then Keyboard/Mouse, and then enable the Developer Console. After that hit your ~ key on your keyboard which should enable the dev console. After that type in "openserverbrowser" and you should see what's in our screenshot; a very familiar looking server browser."

Ie the same as CS:S, TF2

For a permanent server broswer menu option :

1. Open steam
2. My Games tab
3. Right click left4dead
4. Click "Properties"
5. Click "Set launch options"
6. Type this in the box (without the quote marks) "add -serverbrowser"
7. Press Ok
8. Launch game
9. have a browser menu option

Good news patch, cant wait to try it, look forward to dlc more though ofc.
