Valve has detailed the free Survival Pack update for Left 4 Dead, claiming that "the number of zombies killed in a single round often outnumbers an entire campaign".
In a post on the Left 4 Dead blog (thanks Kotaku), Valve's Kerry Davis and Scott Dalton explain that the idea is straightforward: to last for as long as possible while the game heaps a neverending rush of Infected upon your team in waves.
Games should "regularly last under ten minutes, and emphasise competition with team play through leaderboards", the update says.
However, this being Valve, it also goes into detail about how the mode was developed, with particular attention afforded to the pacing, which had to deal with variables like boss-class Infected, player skill and gameplay lulls to engineer something competitive that doesn't "cross the line from having fun to just getting worn out".
There's even a graph showing off how the team tried to "visualise these overlap points and the collapse of each spawn curve".
As you probably remember, the Survival Pack will be a free update for PC and Xbox 360 owners, and is due out on 21st April. As well as Survival Mode, it opens up the Dead Air and Death Toll campaigns for Versus mode.

Look, in this economic climate, it's hard enough to find a new job, let alone a start to a career.

My only single complaint with L4D was it always requires a lot of time, no modes for just a quick jaunt. Now they've fixed that, something that to be honest didn't need fixed and was just me bieng fussy, it's near perfect.
Looking forward to rabid battles with insane shouting down the mic "No! Not him, I had him in my sights! You're supposed to be going for the other ones! Heal me bitch OH MY GOD TANK! TANK!" Followed by swearing and 4 dead team members. |

What whining? From what I can tell, everyone is very excited. It's a little like Christmas, just with less novelty socks and more zombie fun-times.

I don't understand people's preferences. It's clearly Louis all the way. He's the everyday kinda guy caught up in circumstances beyond his control. Francis: Biker, Bill: War Veteran, Zoey: Tax-dodger.

Yeah? I heard from an ex-Valve employee that when they were testing Louis' NPC AI, they put him in a room weaponless with six tanks.
He beat them all in a No Holds Barred Cage match. Without using the chair. |

If I die, don't let those bastards eat me! Although it's a bit late, and you're as well off waiting for the Monday release, somebody brought out the 3rd and 4th campaigns unofficially. There were some problems with finding places to spawn as infected at times but otherwise they did a very good job. A google search would probably find it. Either way, I can't wait for this. Especially for the custom campaigns that'll come out. What are the predictions on the percentage of custom campaigns that'll be set in a shopping mall with a finale on the roof? I reckon 50-75%. :) @Smuggo I was going to disagree but then I saw that you said FACT at the end. That's like the checkmate of the internet! You win this time! ;) Odd how I care more for a bunch of characters that are, basically, zombie chow than I do for most characters in books, TV or movies lately. The little voice snippets make the game. I hate vans/cars/subways/sewers/hospitals/anything that isn't a buncha' guns or a bike. |
