Valkyria demo heads bumper PSN update

Demos, add-ons galore.

It's a bumper day on the PlayStation Store for once, with plenty of downloadable content, a couple of demos and even a full game.

Valkyria Chronicles (581MB) and Hail to the Chimp (374MB) are the two demos. The former, previewed last weekend, is a turn-based strategy title from SEGA, while the latter is a reportedly rather drab satirical party game based around jungle elections. Find out.

The full game is called Linger in Shadows and costs GBP 1.99. From what we understand though, it's actually a product of the demoscene, albeit with a bit of interaction. Should be interesting.

In terms of downloadable content, whips have been flying at Capcom, with Mega Man 9's Endless Attack mode (GBP 1.99) and Proto Man pack (GBP 1.49) arriving on cue, while the rather rubbish Rocketmen gets the It Came From Uranus expansion (GBP 1.99) Xbox Live has had for months.

Elsewhere, Everybody's Golf: World Tour gets Costume Pack A (GBP 3.19), which allows you to re-outfit five of your golfers, and there's also a pair of Super Stardust HD downloads - Complete (GBP 6.49) and Double Pack (GBP 4.49), which sound like the full game with all add-ons and then all the add-ons, but the descriptions are ambiguous. Sorry.

Finally, there's a Comedy Movies quiz pack (GBP 3.49), presumably for Buzz! Quiz TV, and a pair of NBA Live 09 downloads - the Oklahoma City Pack, which is free, and the NBA Live 365 game pack for GBP 6.99, which will allow you to download daily updates for the Dynamic DNA season mode.

Not content with that, there are trailers for WipEout HD (making of), Midnight Club: Los Angeles, Mirror's Edge (2D story trailer), Need for Speed Undercover, Metal Gear Solid 4 (story trailer) and one called Puzzle and Power Packs, which showcases the upcoming PlayStation Network Collection bundles for PSP.

There's also a host of Rock Band content, but we're not going to bore you by writing it all out long hand, so here's a roundup of all the key stuff mentioned above, followed by the Rock Band downloads:

linger in shadows is trippy, but trophies are easy, i got 52% on my first go through, 5silvers, 1 bronze. not bad, nice artistic game for 1.99

YES for Valkyria Chronicles. A game that needs a hands on for certain. This will make or break my pre-order I reckon. (with a pinch of salt, because you can't really judge RPGs from demos).

Nothing wrong with an update that includes a demo for Valkyria Chronicles, not in my book anyway.

Great update! Been waiting for Linger in Shadows for ages and been looking forward to getting my mitts on Valkyria Chronicles since the first Jap video.

I just picked up Hot Shots too, so might be tempted by a nice little skirt for Kratos.

    Tom,

Where. Is. My. Soul. Calibur. IV. DLC?
  • GamesConnoisseur #11 3 years ago

Valkyria Chronciles!! Yippee great PSN update and it is better than some weekly updates we had previously! Of course not comparable to the day Siren and Wipeout HD get on PSN (I m not counting non PSN exclusives ie Burnout which is on disk).

Valkyria is really nice and a welcome variation on the SRPG as far as I'm concerned.

Just tried the Valkyria Chronicles demo... love the gorgeous "hand drawn" effect artwork, dug the music... sadly didn't like the game. I was thinking it was an RPG but instead it turned out to be a somewhat dull (IMO) RTS. Shame. It looked great right up until the game started... :(

NO DEMO FOR ME. Nothing beats spinning up a new game for the first time, with the anticipation of greatness. Every frame is fresh, every sound is new, 'tis gonna be awesome. So no reviews either, thank you and goodbye =)

"I was thinking it was an RPG but instead it turned out to be a somewhat dull (IMO) RTS. Shame."

It's an SRPG, e.g. like Disgaea. You fight battles on a battle map, your troops earn experience and level up and between the battles you have the story segments.

Played both demo missions of VC twice, loved it, this is the first time a demo has actually convinced me to buy a game, saving it for Christmas though, I can see myself sinking some relaxing hours into it during the holidays
  • Darren #19 3 years ago

@Les - Whatever... it still failed to grabbed me and I found the whole thing rather drab and un-entertaining. I was hoping it would be something really special and I went into the demo with an open-mind. I guess this game just isn't for me, although I'll certainly give it at least one more go before I delete the demo. Just to be absolutely sure.

Come on, you must have had an inkling that it was a strategy RPG!

One thing I do like about sRPG's is that unsurprisingly your tactics really do come into play and can swing a battle. You can pretty much survive all of the likes of FF7 by hammering through with physical attacks and Cure materia, but tactics games have given me some of the best battles I've had in an RPG. Monster hour long efforts where everyone's perks come into play.

Plus you get none of the story elements in the demo.
  • Les #21 3 years ago

    @ Widge

Exactly, there's so many ways to approach a battle. It looks like VC makes defensive positioning extra important, which adds a nice layer to e.g. something like Disgaea.

It is a rather special face lift to the SRPG genre IMO. But if turn-based-battles are not your thing, I can uderstand you don't like it. Don't really see the RTS comparison though. There's nothing real-time, there's no resource managing. It's more like an advanced version of Advance Wars.

Adored the VC demo. Looks great, maybe not technically stunning but very, very pretty. Plays pretty well too...reminded me a little of Ring of Red which is no bad thing.

It'll still appeal to a niche market, but right now that market is me.

I'd love to see the Valkyria thing done as a CG-animated anime. The visual design was very pretty and animations very good as well. Don't care for the strategy element, so no buy for me.
Linger in Shadows was a cool little thing, tho.

Not an impressive update, tho but frankly I'm still playing WipEout HD so I really couldn't care less. :p
