Thought this was bloody brilliant when I played it back on the PSX, probably my favourite Square game after FFX.

I've never played this but I'll sure as hell grab this next week. Excellent play Sony, excellent play!

Cool, I'll pick this up! It should slot in nicely along with Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid. That'll complete my long-awaited trilogy of PS1 Games I Somehow Missed Out On For Whatever Reason™

That's it though, I'm not buying anything else - until I finish the 50 bajillion half-finished games I already own...

    /Says this every time :(

Amazing game! I still have this on disc!

can anyone tell me if my saved game files will work with the downloadable version (not that I'm gonna buy it again - just wondering)
  • M_of_the_sys #7 2 years ago

I never liked the game but I don't think I gave it too much of a chance. Played it for an hour and didn't really enjoy it. Might be worth giving it anothe chance.

I am will to be at least 2 Euros it doesn't show up on Tuesday. I'm sure I read on the EU Blog that there were no more PS1 releases before the New Year.
  • YobRenoops #9 2 years ago

However this is a stone cold classic. I've still got the PS1 original lovingly kept.
  • Toothball #10 2 years ago

Sounds decent. I should probably pick this up, but also not pick this up until I play some of the games I already downloaded. I've got £6 sitting on my account though. I wonder if it'll last the week.

By far one of the best games of PSone. If I didnt have an issue playing games that look awfull due to age ( outdated so much )id start playing it all over even right now. Amazing game. If there was a simple remake with just updated graphics and not pixelblocked id pay for it again and play :)
  • hidden_asbestos #12 2 years ago

You'll need to read a FAQ to learn how to play it properly and not get stuck doing zero damage on things. Excellent game and it has about 3 intros if you leave it running.
  • Doctor_What #13 2 years ago

/\ That's exactly what happened to me, I couldn't work out how to do anything to improve the situation, and eventually I gave up. It might be an amazing game when you know what you're doing (the adulation on here says that it must be!), but the design could have given a few more hints towards how to succeed.

I feel like I missed out on something that was great, but I don't think I'll be going back to have another go.

Still, good on Sony for pulling out some more of the back catalogue :)

I see more of this happening. Not much of a difference if you have the PS1 games as you can play them on your PS3. However, great news for those of us without a hacked PSP.

Still have the original, but I WANT A SEQUEL!!!!!!
  • ShiroBen #17 2 years ago

It also has one of the best stories and some of the best writing in the history of gaming. That it never got a sequel is almost like a crime.

Initially I wondered what the fuss was about but when I worked out the combat system I loved it. A puchase for sure, and looks like it'll be under a fiver - win.

Bad timing for me, absolutely skint. It can wait until January though ;P

Looking forward to FF8 as well, any news on that?
  • sfp_noodle #20 2 years ago

excellent news. guessing america will get it on tuesday too. i got final fantasy 8 from there last night and been playing it all morning. awesome game! a shame tht people without an american account cnt play it til january though. mike said tht it shud be out by then
  • kendoji #21 2 years ago

Might try this now that I have a PS3. I'll have to get over my terrible inner graphics whore / snob to enjoy it though! :-P
  • Cadence #22 2 years ago

What's all this about the combat system? Is it just really hard to understand or something?
  • GamesConnoisseur #23 2 years ago

combat system is where you are better off using certain weapon only against certain type of monsters, as using it against one type builds up the stats of the weapon. But use it with everyone, you cancels out the effort in one direction and so forth.

At least that what I recall! I havent finished the game but loved it and like others, have a very fond memory and certainly very happy that its coming out on Tuesday and will replay it lovingly on PSP.

By the way Digitial Comics on PSP Store is really cool! I loved 'The Thief of Always' by Clive Barker and got a few others issues downloaded.

PSP gonna get a lotta of loves from me... aboot time!
  • Stoatboy #24 2 years ago

@Cadence: The major issue is that weapons need to be specialised by using a certain type on the same type of enemies always, rather than just using all of them against anything. If you do this they become better and better at attacking that type of enemy. If you don't they will become useless against everything. So pick a weapon type and only use it against a given type of enemy. I'm not sure it matters so much which weapon you use for which type, although IIRC for humans it was good to have something spiky in case they were wearing chain mail. From memory I used lances against dragons because, well, they're big old bastards and hitting them with something the size of a tree seemed about right, and crossbows against animals because the range was useful for bats.

    Edit: Beaten to it.

Actually while I'm at it, I'll add that I agree with ShiroBen. VS contains a couple of the most powerful cutscenes I've seen in games. I usually couldn't give a flying toss about story in games, but this is the only one where I make an exception. T'is awesome.

I have the disk game of this and i highly recommend the it very good game and nice graphics for the ps1.
  • VMerken #26 2 years ago

Well, if they can't/won't produce a sequel, at least remake it with the latest cutting edge graphics/lighting systems. Squenix is good at those, and personally I'd love to see every intricate detail of Vagrant's game reproduced with high detail goodness.

With that said, I still have this superior game on disc, both the PAL and NTSC versions. Plays rather well on the B/C PS3, so no sale right now but maybe in the future when the originals are foobar.

EDIT: to the "I'm doing zero damage" crew: as I've explained in another post in another Vagrant Story-related topic, you can finish the game using only your starting equipment without too much problems. In this case, doing "zero damage" is not an excuse for having trouble completing the game :).

@ Menage "Still have the original, but I WANT A SEQUEL!!!!!!"

I think FFXII to me felt more like a sequel to Vagrant Story. Just without all the great things that made VS so ****ing good.

Proper sequel? Yes SE, it's time! Revive this franchise now!
  • Linkified #28 2 years ago

Good now get all the good games on psn
  • Jamiesan #29 2 years ago

first time I played this I properly mucked up my weapons and had to fight all the bosses by chaining damage for 0,1,2,3,4,5... adds up if you do a nice 30+ hit chain though! This game still has one of my alltime favourite stories and music scores. Almost every cutscene has dynamic music that adapts to how long you look at the text for, thought that was pretty cool at the time. Also it had "achievements" which pleased my gotta catch em all type personality
    Definate buy, roll on tuesday!
  • tenebrae #30 2 years ago

Whooooaaaaaaa! Looks like xmas will come early. Alongside Xenogears, this is one of my all-time favourite PS1 games. Riskbreaker Ashley Riot, reporting for duty for yet another Lea Monde infiltration.

Never really got the hang of the battle system (at least I'm pretty sure I didn't, because it was laborious and boring) because it was fairly complicated. It is a beautiful game though, very artistically accomplished and with a great story - just what you'd expect from the guy who went on to design FFXII :)

i remember this game, was fantastic
