UT 360 dev to begin in 08 News

Xbox 360 News by Tom Bramwell

15 November, 2007

Mark Rein says that Unreal Tournament 3 is definitely going to come out on Xbox 360 - they're just not working on it right this second, and won't be "until early next year".

Rein was speaking to the capital letters fans at RIOTT when he was asked if the game is ever coming out on 360. "Oh yeah, absolutely," he said.

Once again he explained that while the PS3 "is an open system" and that the chaps at Sony "embrace user-created content", "there isn't really a way to do that on the 360".

"So our job, when we finish the PS3 version, and we've taken a little break, is to sit down with Microsoft and to figure out how we can do Mods on their system."

Work will start "early next year", he added.

In the meantime, the PC version is due out on 23rd November.

It will be followed first by the PS3 version, although Rein admitted in a separate interview with Eurogamer last week that localisation issues could prevent it from making it to shop shelves in Europe this side of Christmas.

Look out for a review of Unreal Tournament 3 in the very near future, or those of you who speak German can pop over to our sister site, Eurogamer.de, and read their 8/10 review right now.

What a stupid question. Yeah ofcourse they should have given it a 9 because YOU were expecting that.. And YOUR expectations are always the only way to go. D:

So Epic haven't even started work on the 360 version and won't do until next year. Wow, that makes it sound like it won't see a release until late 2008.

I understand the PS3 version is nearly finished and may even be released this year. Definitely going for that version personally as my PC ran the demo OK on high detail but didn't feel as smooth as I like and I'm loathe to spend hundreds of pounds upgrading my ageing one now just for one or two games. Besides I plan on buying a new 4 GB quad-core PC next summer anyway.

Err.. no.. 360 version is almost done. They just stopped at the mod point because they had some trouble getting it onto Live. The demo displayed a few years ago was a 360 version BTW.

This is ofc the official point of view... behind the scenes it is just Epic not wanting to release against all the killer 360 FPSs and getting some extra $$ from Sony in the process.

Makes a change to see a release on the PS3 before the Xbox. I'm kinda getting sick of seeing realease dates and then finding out that the PS3 is weeks or months later.

Because it yet again fails to be as good as UT'99?

Why on Earth are they claiming that they basically haven't started the 360 version, when loads of people have seen it running very nicely? Remarkable!

@ Darren

Despite what they have said, I suspect there will be at least a skeleton crew playing around with some of the code. I sincerely doubt that they have done absolutely NOTHING on a 360 version.

And anyway, they've already pushed out Gears of War, so they have first hand experience of the engine on the 360 platform, so development times should be reduced.

I reckon Rein may have been specifically thinking of the user-generated content when saying they haven't done anything yet, as like he said, they need to discuss it with Microsoft to find the best way forward.

It must be a six month exclusive, so I guess the x360 version will be released next summer, at best.

This is bollocks.

I'm sure OXM USA actually played the 360 version a few months ago.

My bet is the 360 version will be about 99% done by the time the PC version is released.

Anyone who cares enough will buy it on PC or patiently wait until next year.

As for me I'll be skipping this one thank you. UT2004 was hardly impressive.

I really think this will flop on 360 anyway - it's to old school for it's own good in game mechanics, and with COD4 offering extensive legs for leveling up (like last years R6:V which is still being played) it'll be lost by the wayside.

My bet is the X360 version was the first to be written and finished.

Epic just can't release it because of the timed exclusive period for the PS3 release, which by the way, is ideal for them as there are far too many FPS jostling for position under the Xmas tree this season already for X360 owners, [so I'm sure Epic don't mind waiting].

[Also, does anyone know how timed exclusives work? Would EuroGamer take up this real journalistic challenge (rather than just Copy'n'Paste from news releases) and explain it please?
What if a game gets delayed, like UT3, does that mean the exclusivity window is smaller?]

[Finally], I am a bit puzzled by all these other terms; "Mod", "PS3 is an open system" and "user created content".

What do they mean in this context?

Is he talking about gamers providing content to things like level design?

Anyone care to explain please?
