US Metroid Prime 3 date

Out in August over there.

Metroid Prime 3 will be out in that there America on 20th August, Nintendo said today, in one of those press release things full of release dates.

Retro Studios' third instalment in the first-person action-adventure series was one of the first Wii games ever glimpsed (remember the very first E3 trailer?), but its development has been protracted by Nintendo's obvious desire to get it right.

Indeed, as recently as April, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime said it wouldn't be released until the publisher was quite satisfied. "The fact with Metroid is we want to make sure that that game is perfect," he said.

Meanwhile, there were lots of other games on the Nintendo summer list for Wii and DS (included below), but only a few with solid dates that we haven't already had set down for Europe independently (DK Jungle Climber on the DS, for example - 10th September).

  • AcidSnake #5 5 years ago

Chibi-robo on DS? Where'd that come from?!

Also if it's august over there it's....well...December over here right?
I also predict the european release date of Super Paper Mario to be 20th of august...
  • Killerbee #6 5 years ago

I'm surprised and pleased to see Metroid Prime 3 is out so soon, but sadly I won't be getting excited until they announce a European release date. And judging by the (ongoing) wall of silence over Super Paper Mario, I really shouldn't hold my breath.
  • kincaide #7 5 years ago

That should see us through to xmas nicely. Good work Nintendo
  • Toonster #8 5 years ago

sweet. I live in the US. I'll be sure to rub it in as much as possible.

What's that? Metroid is coming out HERE in august. Why, that's fantastic!

About time too. The Wii is crying out for some more great first party titles.

I was starting to worry about it (I don't own one myself, but I want it to do well on principle and trying new things benefits everyone).
  • coojam #12 5 years ago

Less traditional Nintendo stuff please, more fun party things like Sports! Metroid ain't gonna sell consoles...
  • Der_tolle_Emil #13 5 years ago

    Metroid ain't gonna sell consoles...

It sold consoles since the SNES days.
  • Tiiti #14 5 years ago

Is it really worth me keeping my Wii in the hope that MP3 might be, well, alright? I loved the first MP but I found the 2nd one too similar and dull to play.

FYI I never liked any of the other Metroid games before.
  • kangarootoo #15 5 years ago

Agreed. Metroid is close to being a system seller I would say. Certainly if it has a good control system that really makes use of the Wiimote. Mario Galaxy is another killer app in my book too.

That said, more quality games of all types are welcome. Less of the badly ported tat is all I ask for.
  • The-Bodybuilder #16 5 years ago

Other than metroid, that list looks depressing (the wii that is).

Edit: Screw Metroid. Look, HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL.

Just need to see the Smash Bros update and all will be well.

Actually Datel if you read this, hurry the fuck up with the Wii Freeloader kthnx.
  • LetsGo #18 5 years ago

    High School Musical, nuff' said.

    /me sings "WERE BREAKING FREE!"
  • ShekkyBoy #19 5 years ago

The list looks sparse. Only big games coming out are from Nintendo - BW2, MP3 and Mario Strikers. Where's the third-party - yearly EA updates don't count.

Also, can we get a fucking date for Paper Mario? Jesus Christ, NoE.
  • JackyB #20 5 years ago

i guess the prob is translating it to many different languages for europe as it is text heavy. Hopefully we wont wait as long for other big titles (such as Metroid) as we have for Paper Mario
    Edited by 1 at 21/05/07 @ 15:59
  • Darren #21 5 years ago

I can't wait for Metroid Prime 3 but if Nintendo's lack of commitment to Europe is anything to go by - where is Trauma Centre Second Opinion for example? - I might have to! :(

I guess I'll add three months to that US date for the European release, shall I?
  • souljacker2000 #22 5 years ago

I take it WERE BREAKING FREE is from high school musical.... Y do u know the songs??? how old are you? are you a girl?
  • absolutezero #23 5 years ago

This is what I don't understand when most American titles get shipped to japan very very few of them are translated into Japanese and no one cares.

I very much doubt there are that many videogame playing Europeans that can't at least read English, translating into multiple languages is an archaic excuse, as is removing content to fit all the other subs in.
  • JackyB #24 5 years ago

@absolutezero. Very true. And there is no excuse for the lack of Trauma centre either
  • ProtoformX #25 5 years ago

Aside fomr Metroid Prime 3 there's nothing there that really excites me. Come on Nintendo. I've been a Nintendo fan since the NEs but now I find myself being drawn more and more to my 360. I know quality over quantity is important but I think Ninetndo us taking it too far. Maqrio, Zelda and Metroid games are all amazing when they come out but then there's almost nothing else inbetween.
  • Rosseh #26 5 years ago

Pfft. Yeh, they said this would be out in like March now its August. Want to make sure the game is perfect? Yeh, they spent that long on Zelda and look how JAW DROPPING that was. Seriously, Nintendo, I can't afford to buy all of the games I will ever play on the Wii in Autumn at once. I don't what to believe from them anymore.
  • Nova5lag #27 5 years ago

    Animal Crossing??? /0\ sigh.
  • Nova5lag #28 5 years ago

  • AcidSnake #29 5 years ago

I disagree actually, I think that translations are especially important now...
The Wii has been bought by the 'non-gaming' crowd and therefor all games have to be as accessible as possible...
I'd think Nintendo are hoping that the people who bought it for Wii Sports will give Super Paper Mario a chance...But if they deny translations then only the hardcore crowd will pick it up...

Though I don't really understand why it would have to take that much time...
It shouldn't take more than a few days...
(And yes I have translated before, and I know the amount of effort that has to go into it)

    EDIT: Damn you Gratamatics!

Simply add the Babelfish Channel to the Wii to automatically translate all games from English to whatever crazy language Johnny Foreigner is speaking these days. JOB DONE!
  • WillTheSecond #31 5 years ago

This actually made me gasp, please, please Nintendo don't delay Metroid 3 and BWii for Europe! Super Paper Mario was an acceptable delay, these two would not be, aside from Brawl these are the games I'm most looking forward too.

  • smelly #36 5 years ago

    >Halo 3 is DOOOOOMED!
    >Talk about reacting to Halo 3's announcement,

Dont get me wrong, i've never like metroid prime games. But comparing metroid to halo is doing it an injustice.

Metroid is an action adventure game with puzzle and fps and 3rd person exploring parts. Halo is just a mind numbing shooter.

Not the same kettle of fish in any stroke of the imagination.
  • MoGamer2006 #37 5 years ago

    @ MARKIV

In case you hadn't noticed, loads of publishers are having press days and making major announcements in lieu of the now-defunct E3... like MSoft and Halo 3, for example.

Nintendo's got a press do starting tomorrow, so no surprise that it's announced its forthcoming games for summer.
  • Artemus #38 5 years ago

Colour me suprised. Thought it would be November at the earliest. Well, I suppose it will be in Europe!

We can always depend on you, smelly.

"And smelly comes to nintendo's defence to strike again"

    WTF???

Are you a fucking retarded moron or what? Where in my above post do i "come to nintendo's defence"?

All i said was that metroid and halo arent the same type of game. And i've stated NUMEROUS times on this site that i dont like metroid.

FFS.. There's some retarded fuckwit xbox fanboys on this site, all you have to do is mention halo or gears of snore and they immediately presume you're slagging of their wankbox.
  • smelly #41 5 years ago

"nintendo had to do this otherwise it would have been foolish releasing after Halo 3 because of the hype of Halo it could have affected the sales of Metroid substantially. "

    In what way?

They're both completely different styles of games. One is an action adventure, one is running down coridors pointing a cursor at something and pressing the "fire" button. That's like comparing oblivion with doom, as they're both in first person?

Do you really think people are going to look at halo 3 and think "oh shite, that's amazing, it's another generic fps game i've seen millions of times before, i REALLY must sell my wii and get a 360 instead?".

And not to mention they're obviously on two completely different platforms.

I fail to see how one would effect the sales of the other?

It's not as if historically metroid has been a system seller or anything is it? It REALLY sold the DS and cube didnt it?
  • smelly #42 5 years ago

Mind you, the last thing nintendo would want IS a system seller (unless they can somehow get more units to stores for said game launch date)
  • Santino #43 5 years ago

crunch time for NoE, either i can buy this game from my work by the end of september at the latest, or i am going to import a US machine (with super paper mario and trauma center of course) and never look back.
  • smelly #44 5 years ago

"smelly no one is doubting the wii's selling power but I think Halo will sell around five times as much as Metroid "

And im not arguing with you. Although five times more is probably a bit of an over-estimate. That'd require every 360 owner to buy halo - which aint gonna happen (because i for one wont be getting it.. But then i doubt i'll get metroid either)

As i said, metroid has NEVER been a big system seller.

But (i'll repeat myself) i fail to see how halo will influence metroid sells (or vice versa)?
    Edited by 1 at 21/05/07 @ 19:05
  • Vin #45 5 years ago

Smelly's talking perfect sense, you schmucks.

Jeezus, has it ever occurred to a few of you that the videogame canon is changing, now that the audience has opened up, and that maybe - just maybe - the name Metroid doesn't hold the cachet it used to among modern gamers?

  • Santino #46 5 years ago

smelly i think you should maybe think about changing your account name and starting from scratch, in this thread people seem to be completely disregarding your points and just being intent on being defensive about their precious halo. What makes it even funnier is that it was what seems like an xbot that started it off in the 1st place!

Just to throw in my own 2 cents and repeat what has been said too many times before, what in the hell has Halo got to do with Metroid? They aren't in the same genre ffs, there aren't many games like metroid prime, there are however fps games in abundance, so pick one of them to compare halo to, just stay away from the likes of Half Life though as that game is above and beyond comparison to a generic console shooter.
  • smelly #47 5 years ago

"Smelly you are defending Metroid by slagging off Halo. Thats as fanboyish as you can get."

Im slagging of BOTH games, i dont like EITHER! Numbnuts!

  • mattigan #49 5 years ago

But (i'll repeat myself) i fail to see how halo will influence metroid sells (or vice versa)?

I reckon it will, with the Wii60 console combo being the popular choice if you're not going for a 360, then thats 2 AAA titles coming out in a very short space of time, coupled with the fact that 90% of the installed fnabase of 360 owners are rabid yanks who will be solely focussed on Halo, if Metroid Launched after Halo then it wouldn't get a look in for several months, after which time the fuss about it would have died down and the next big thing would be on the horizon. And so Metroid would lose out again, I think that this is the reason for the date and also the fact that it was anounced just after the H3 release date was confirmed.
  • EmiliasHorse #50 5 years ago

Numbnuts? cheers Smelly you have a wonderful grasp of the English language.
  • smelly #51 5 years ago

    >smelly i think you should maybe think about changing your account name

    Nah.

It was only a few years ago people used to accuse me of being an xbox fanboy and appologist when everyone was slagging it off at the start of its life on here.

    Swings and round-a-bouts.

    >just being intent on being defensive about their precious halo

You know, that in itself is interesting isnt it? Why go into a thread on another game on another system and get start to try to big up a game on your system and then get upset when people degrade said game?

Maybe its insecurities? Maybe they know deep down they're precious best game isnt actually all the great.. And so they're desperate to prove otherwise.

For example, i can say here in a thread about metroid prime, that i found it dull, repetitive, and hated running backwards and forwards over the same rooms fighting the same monsters in each that i'd already killed.. And not a single "nintendo fan" or "nintendo appolgist" (As the wankbox fangirls like to call them) will get upset.

But if i said "halo is nothing but running through endless locations pointing cursors at things and pressing a fire button until you die of boredom - and relies on nothing more than pretty effects to make up for the fact it's a dull boring repetitive shooter we've all seen before and played millions of times before on various systems" - every single xbox fankid will jump into this forum and start to cry and slag me off regardless of my context for saying that (see the cooking mamma thread for example) .

Says a lot really. I have a friend who works in a gameshop. she hates dealing with fankids, and often says that the xbox owners are the worst. The more i come to this forum, the more i can understand her point :-)
  • smelly #52 5 years ago

"cheers Smelly you have a wonderful grasp of the English language. "

    Why thankyou!

Although coming from someone who just said "fanboyish" - I find that wonderfully ironic!
  • Santino #53 5 years ago

smelly: "halo is nothing but running through endless locations pointing cursors at things and pressing a fire button until you die of boredom - and relies on nothing more than pretty effects to make up for the fact it's a dull boring repetitive shooter we've all seen before and played millions of times before on various systems"

i know this isn't really on topic here, but i totally agree with this description apart from the bit about pretty effects, halo was no visual showcase for the xbox, i would say it was mid-range for the system and fangirls have created the myth that it has above average visuals (conveniently dismissing the horrible texture pop up, 30fps frame rate etc)
  • EmiliasHorse #54 5 years ago

    @Smelly
Very true and I apologize unreservedly as I was wrong, you were dissing both games and I was skim reading, so missed the point. Sorry.
  • smelly #55 5 years ago

    @Emilia'sHorse : no offense taken.
  • smelly #56 5 years ago

If yer gonna compare metroid with anything, the closest thing i can think of it as - is a first person zelda (but instead of swinging a sword im shooting my gun).

if yer goinna compare halo with anything, try half life 2.. erm.. or maybe not, as if you did that it'd make the fankids cry.. :-)

  • The-Bodybuilder #60 5 years ago

    >"What makes it even funnier is that it was what seems like an xbot that started it off in the 1st place!"

    Indeed it was.
Which is why I was so glad that everybody ignored the guy's post and continued with the topic.
Then smelly had to respond (he just couldn't let it go, could he?) and give halo a little bit of an attack (and we all know how that doesn't change the dynamics of a thread).

That's why I said he couldn't help but defend nintendo. All he had to do was be mature enough to ignore the guy, but nooooooo, he couldn't control his urges. He responded and then belittles halo to boot, which he obviously shouldn't have done for the sake of the thread.

But that's smelly all over. Rather than use his noodle and just ignore the flaimebait, he bites it and gives it a little nudge.

And now this is the thread.

    >Who gives a s**t about Paper Mario when we've got BWii and Metroid Prime 3?

As someone who's completed paper mario.. it's not something you really want to get too excited about.

it's okay, but over too quickly - and not something you'd want to play again once youve done so.

But you guys have mercury and strikers .. both ace games (apparently) which have lots of replay value.. colo(u)r me jealous :-)
  • chupachups #63 5 years ago

"Agreed. Metroid is close to being a system seller I would say. "

I don't think that's the case with the Wii or DS. I think they're sold by games like Nintendogs, Brain Training, Animal Crossing and Cooking Mama. I bet these DS titles will do just as well on the Wii when/if they make the transition.

"I very much doubt there are that many videogame playing Europeans that can't at least read English, translating into multiple languages is an archaic excuse, as is removing content to fit all the other subs in."

It's shocking that they don't even give people the option of buying the english version early, there's many countries in Europe where they never ever get a translation into their own language (Scandinavia, Eastern Europe etc) and end up using it in english anyway.

Part of the problem may be flag-waving legislation in big markets like France and Germany, that put quotas on how much english-language stuff is allowed onto the market because they're terrified people will forget how to speak their own language.

gonna buy a wee for this and flog it on completion..unless theres anything good out by then..
comments about MP2 were justified. Had it been the only Prime game it would have been hailed excellent. As it was, it was too similiar to the first and way too large in scale..i didnt particularly take to the light / dark world thing , made it way too confusing and unnecessarily long..I've a feeling nintendos LTTP influence was forced on it!

    anyway, bring on august!

  • smelly #65 5 years ago

Its not as simple as that.

The uk version STILL needs to be converted to PAL, and go thru the uk ratings boards, etc.

Its not just a case of "here's the american game".

As for metroid - bear in mind the last two games have launched in the uk FIRST..

  • ShekkyBoy #70 5 years ago

Exactly how long did you 'play' on it?
  • Santino #71 5 years ago

I read DjWhizzkidd's comment. It was terrible. Very poor even for a troll. Imagine getting Metroid Prime confused with a fps lol only a fool or somebody who has never played it could think that.
  • The-Bodybuilder #72 5 years ago

  • smelly #74 5 years ago

MP2 released in uk 2 weeks after US

So (as you say) if current trends continue - it'll be in the uk sooner than 2 weeks after us release.
  • DjWhizzkidd #75 5 years ago

Well, Im failry sure its an FPS, what with the first person view and all, except you could roll up in a ball now and again. So how would you catergorise it?
  • DjWhizzkidd #76 5 years ago

I wasnt trolling, thats just what I thought of the game. Played it for hours, never really knew what was happening or where I was supposed to go. Probably didnt help being a Metroid virgin.
  • Santino #77 5 years ago

like people have already stated, is oblivion (yawn) an fps because its in 1st person and u can shoot a bow? if you play a driving game in bonnet cam does that make it a fps? metroid prime is a platform/adventure game where you can shoot things. the main gameplay focus is exploration and puzzle solving.
  • Nikanoru #78 5 years ago

Yeah, apparently these people would classify Duck Hunt as an FPS as well. I've given up on restating the obvious.

Played it for hours, never really knew what was happening or where I was supposed to go.

Ah, the "I suck at this, therefore it is a bad game". Nice, if a bit old.

I didn't like Zelda, and not a single game on that list interests me at all.

Then maybe, videogames just aren't for you.
  • Nikanoru #79 5 years ago

Oh, I know. If they insist. Instead of first person adventure, Let's call it a "thinking man's FPS".
  • smelly #80 5 years ago

@DAMAGE.INC.: Well done. Made yerself look like a complete retard, i'm impressed.

There's more to making a game great than making it look pretty you know.

  • Nikanoru #81 5 years ago

what they really mean is, WE CAN'T GET THE FUCKING GAME TO LOOK ANY BETTER THAN THE SECOND ONE ON CUBE!!!

Yeah, it's funny because it's true! I guess that's what Nintendo always means when they say that after delaying a game, even with games that were on the...cube...and N64...uhh...wait. Nope, you're just an idiot/troll. :D
  • L0cky #82 5 years ago

It's delayed because they're trying to figure out how to strip the suit and show your Mii in it's underwear if you complete it in under 3 hours.
  • Razz #83 5 years ago

Iwata said that Metroid Prime games are made with the Western Market in mind, so I doubt that we'll have to wait long for MP3 to ocme out in Europe.
  • Nikanoru #84 5 years ago

It's delayed because they're trying to figure out how to strip the suit and show your Mii in it's underwear if you complete it in under 3 hours.

Ok, now this idea you should totally pitch to Nintendo. Like, right now.

Iwata said that Metroid Prime games are made with the Western Market in mind, so I doubt that we'll have to wait long for MP3 to ocme out in Europe.

Echoes was launched first in the US, with Europe following only a week and a half later. It better be no different this time. D:

Fair enough if you're a Metroid virgin. MP2: Echoes was the first (and only) game I got for my discounted £40 GC, and I thought it was class. Really atmospheric and well-paced unlike a lot of fps nowadays. I could understand people being initially annoyed with it, how slowly paced it is and losing all your weaponry/skills. I already knew that there was going to be a load of scanning and text reading, but it just made it better imo. If you were expecting a sci-fi CoD or Halo-beater with epic set battles, then you were going to be disappointed. But the bosses in Echoes were fucking brilliant.

    Something just occured to me:
Retro Studios, if you're reading DO NOT make the default menu option 'multiplayer'...
I never touched the multiplayer on Echoes and had to twirl the weird 'sphere-o-menu' around every single time!...Might seem like a little gripe, but it was bloody annoying I tell you...

The original Prime was great..it deserved to sell far more than it did (the highest rated game of last gen at Gamerankings).

Hopefully Nintendo will back it up with a bigger and better advertising campaign this time.

    @chupachups
"Part of the problem may be flag-waving legislation in big markets like France and Germany, that put quotas on how much english-language stuff is allowed onto the market because they're terrified people will forget how to speak their own language."

So you're saying its a bad thing a country is enforcing its own national language? Whenever I go back to Belgium, I'm amazed at how many people just speak French and English, simply because they're too lazy to learn the local language. Why bother if the locals speak English anyway eh?

If this is the reason for translated versions being delayed, I'm ALL for it.

Me too. Saying stuff like "everyone in europe can speak english - so lets just release it in english and be done with it" is amazingly offensive typical xenophobic english mentality that i left england because of.

I realise now your not allowed to dis-like Nintendo franchises. Im sorry for doubting you all.
