US Halo 3 breaks 1m pre-orders

That's quite a lot, really.

Pre-orders for Microsoft and Bungie's Halo 3 have surpassed the one million mark in North America, GamesIndustry.biz reports.

With three different versions of the game due on September 25, Microsoft is expecting the Legendary Edition of the game to sell out on release day.

"What we've experienced is nothing short of phenomenal," said Bob McKenzie, senior vice president of merchandising at GameStop.

"Halo 3 has eclipsed many previous records and will prove to be one of the must-have items of 2007."

Some of America's biggest brands are supporting the release of the Xbox 360 exclusive, with Pontiac, Burger King, Mountain Dew, 7-Eleven and Comcast all offering various forms of cross-branding.

"This September, Halo 3 will push videogame entertainment into the forefront of mainstream culture," said Chris Di Cesare, director of creative marketing at Microsoft.

"Teaming up with some of the world's strongest and most recognisable brands is trailblazing new paths and cementing video games as big entertainment on a par with major event films, and is a testament to the excitement and anticipation intrinsically linked to Halo 3."

Do you like games industry? Because that's all they talk about on GamesIndustry.biz!

well i appreciate what was special about halo 1, the AI was a quantum leap, and the split screen co op was inspired, plus the vehicles being seamlessly integrated, the balancing of the human vs covenant (it started its life as an RTS so balancing was essential at that stage), and overall the system link experience was so social and heated that you couldn't help but love it, if you stumbled across that many xbox nerds in one room that is.

halo 2 was shit by comparison, but it made some advancements on the xbox live front, so people forgave the paler game experience as their xbox live accounts were suddenly worth it.

Halo 3, well i was so unimpressed by halo 2, i didn't even bother checking out the beta, so maybe i will be surprised, maybe i wont, but i aint buying into any of the hype.

"I wish I could understand what's so special about Halo. I want to join the hype too :("

    Basically its this. If you:

    a) Like Console FPSs.
    b) Believe that the handling of the weapons and the AI are the most important thing in an FPS.
    c) Like playing with your friends (be it splitscreen/LAN/LIVE).

Then Halo is awesome. If you're one of those tiresome people who thinks that a game is only good if:

It doesn't have animation glitches or physics glitches.
It has to be GRITTY (i.e. you're one of those people who prefer original Killzone to Halo and the only reason you give is it look more dark and adult, innit).
It has some kind of amazingly deep story.

Then its not for you. Of course there's always the last option (that you're some kind of fanboy with a vested interest in hating it).

Bottom line - there has only ever been two good console FPSs - Goldeneye and Halo - that's really why its special.
  • Britesparc Verified Creative, ITV #9 5 years ago

I think the thing that's going to be really special about Halo 3 is the epic-scale battles (by all accounts, literally dozens and dozens of troops laying into each other) and the editing stuff (recording movies, massive editing of multiplayer options, possibilities for social networking, etc).

Plus, those who enjoyed the first game just love Halo: we love the universe, the characters, and even if it's not the seismic shift the first game was, it'll still be an excellent, incredibly fun game with an awesome multiplayer.

  • playgen #13 5 years ago

It might have had 1 million pre-orders, but I don't expect it to be the game that sends the 36o into superstar console status the Microsoft think it will be. The game has a hardcore nerdy following, add the "limited edition" crap and massive pre-orders were invetiable.

"Bottom line - there has only ever been two good console FPSs - Goldeneye and Halo - that's really why its special."

Quick question: Am I the only one that prefered Perfect Dark over Goldeneye? Don't get me wrong it was good, but Perfect Dark I thought was better in multiplayer...

On topic: 1 million! Bloody hell! With preorders like that, theres no doubt theres going to be a Halo 4.
  • Darren #16 5 years ago

Well it looks like Halo 3 will be a huge, huge success for Bungie/Microsoft regardless of how the final game turns out. I can't say I'm particularly excited about playing it since I've not seen anything so far to actually get excited about! The beta was OK at best but oh-so-samey, I thought the E3 trailer was a massive letdown and the recent EG preview of the third level left me a bit non-plussed so I'm preparing myself for eventual disappointment. That means that if the game turns out fine that I'll be happy and if it doesn't, well it won't feel like such a big letdown really. I'm not at all interested in playing it online though, did it all years ago on the PC version of Halo so I'll be judging the game solely on it campaign which I hope is better than Halo 2.
  • lambtron #17 5 years ago

    @zuljin

No I know lots of people who think that too :). I can't even tell you why I liked Goldeneye better than Perfect Dark - its just something I can't put my finger on.

It was a good game though :).
  • miiiguel #18 5 years ago

Darren: there's plenty of excitment arround the corner, Bioschock, Blue Dragon; Mass Effect, and of course mighty Halo.
  • Fuser #19 5 years ago

Goldeneye was better than PD because its stayed of immensely high quality throughout. PD, although it was full of frankly brilliant ideas (co-op bots were awesome), and a great set of initial levels, the last few levels were not so hot, and the less said about the comedy alien the better. I was crushed when he turned up.

Oh, and I'm so glad I'm not the only one who couldnt be bothered to finish Halo 2. Loved the first one though. I'll be waiting for reviews on 3 before I buy it...
  • Dizzy #20 5 years ago

No no I agree, the single player was pure comedy! I'm not sure I even finished it, whereas Goldeneye I got every cheat and the 007 mode!

    Ok thats kinda sad :)
  • afghan_jones #22 5 years ago

I intend to hype it even more so it will inevitably be crap for eveyrone when it comes.

I on the other hand will be immune to my own hype, and my currently middling expectations means when its actually good I will be really pleased and everyone else will be gutted.

So, yeah apparently Master Chief has a new cloaking device like predator and also a ninja sword which he can use in slo-mo. There is also no enemy AI, each enemy in the game is controlled over LIVE by a peasant in a korean sweat shop so it is all totally responsive and unscripted. The peasants also have electrodes on their goolies so when you shoot a Brute in the game, you can hear their screams through your telly.

Also, in the second half of 'Halo 3: Hype evolved', Master Chief gets stripped of his armour and spends the rest of the game running round the jungle with a laser bow and arrow, in some kerazy new stealth sections with one hit cinematice slo mo kills.

The game will also support full 1000-player co-op, and will offer 1,000,000 acheivement points. 'Halo 3: Hype Evolved' will dispense cash from the front of your Xbox when you unlock the acheivements.
  • Yossarian #23 5 years ago

Halo 3 is a huge deal in America. huge. it's on Burger King meals over there.
  • Darren #24 5 years ago

@miiiguel - I know... those games and Eternal Sonata are the ones that genuinely excite me, far more than just another FPS sequel. Halo 3 is one of those games I expect I'll end up enjoying but probably won't impress me in any major way - I'll play it then move on to something else once I've completed the campaign. Like I did Halo 2, in fact.
  • Raya #25 5 years ago

Perfect Dark 64 was very dull! Seems Xbox users don't play mega FPS's like Half Life 2.

1 million pre orders - is that all? Considering nearly every xbox owner owns an xbox to play Halo... See if it can reach the 10's of millions that a load of DS games have. Of that doesn't count - it's the DS.
  • mkreku #26 5 years ago

I'm much more hyped about Mass Effect. Why aren't everyone? Be more like meee!
  • Fairlane #27 5 years ago

I was a bit Haloed Out, but then i read the threads here and on GAF - and suddenly all the optimism from the Halo crowd got to me - I started longing with a smile

  • miiiguel #31 5 years ago

Raya: 48 days until debut day, I'd say 1 million is pretty good. I don't believe the DS will ever get any game with 100 pre-orders, why? because ppl buy its games like they buy a package of crackers.

I didn't like Perfect Dark at all, as a matter of fact the beautifull machine got grounded when I bought that game, I didn't touch it in 2 weeks or so.

"Name one Playstation game that has as many people playing multiplayer online at one time as Halo 2?"

    >FFXI

I doubt that FFXI on PS2 has even as many subscribers as H2 has people online at the same time.
  • miiiguel #48 5 years ago

"The campaign mode will be keeping score of your progress. That is, you gain actual points while playing, and the better you do (ie more headshots, more sticks, etc) the higher your score. These of course will be applied to online leaderboards. There is something called an Elephant in multiplayer that is literally a huge mobile base that can carry vehicles and players. The article said it's similar to the Sand Crawler the Jawas used in Star Wars. The strategy to use such a thing sounds very intersting.

The game features this pseudo-map maker called the Forge. The really unique thing about Forge is it's real time and co-op. You can place objects, weapons, crates, fushion cores, etc in real time with other players and then drop in and play the maps seamlessly. There are even a few game modes that have come out of this, like Jenga.
The maps can be uploaded and shared. You can log onto Bungie.net and browse the maps, and then queue them for download. As soon as you fire up Halo 3, the maps will be downloaded."

    redefining.

For me a redefining moment is when the entire genre changes because of one game. Like what happened after Ultima IV was released..

  • login_name #54 5 years ago

    @Dizzy

Halo 2 had approx 250K players in the last 24hrs, according to Bungie's stat site. FFXI apparently peaked at about 500K subscribers in 2004 and currently has approx 350K active accounts.

Granted FFXI is split between 3 formats but seeing as the 360 up take has been relatively weak, which is fair enough since its an aging game, the numbers peaked before the 360 was released and the subs where at 200K - 250K a few weeks after the original launch (before the PC version was released). I'd estimate the majority of the subscribers are playing on PS2.

It's all guess work and H2 might take it now, but I bet FFXI has had more PS2 players than H2 had xbox players at their relative peaks.
  • Dizzy #55 5 years ago

    >Halo 2 had approx 250K players in the last 24hrs

After years. H2 had 500K+ players when launched.

FF active acounts != players at same time. The will probably have 50K of those online at same time max.

Anyway... nuff said about this. Not gonna get into this discussion any more :)

lol... that dreamworld you live in must be great.

absolutely no chance. As Dizzy said when H2 was in its peak it had over 500k+ ppl online at the same time which is more than all the subscribers to FFXI in total.

there is no console game multiplayer wise that has had more ppl on at same time than H2.

Now PC mulitplayer is a different matter.. i presume WOW wins but must be a close one with Counterstrike and even Lineage.

  • login_name #68 5 years ago

"After years. H2 had 500K+ players when launched."

What, and FFXI only came out yesterday? It's over 2 years older. I'll take your word on the numbers, even if it is just an assumption, however, just to add my own or rather someone else's assumption into the mix:

"it’s unclear if FFXI passed 500K subscribers in January 2004 or April 2004. Recent documents from Square-Enix will only confirm “over 500,000 players”, but given the ratio of characters to subscribers in previous census, the true number could be closer to 700,000." - from mmogchart

"FF active acounts != players at same time. The will probably have 50K of those online at same time max."

That's your guess, but while you mention 'at the same time' H2 currently only has approx 8K at the same time. FFXI will have a lot more than that spread over the different servers, I'll guarantee it.

  • afghan_jones #74 5 years ago

I saw 7 people playing football in the park the other day.

Then later, I saw 2 people playing Super Monkey Ball.

I also saw one person and one cat playing with a bit of string.

Then I watched the telly and saw eleven people playing football against another eleven people.

Then I watched golf where 6 people were playing.

After that I played Gears of War. 8 people were in that game, plus lots of other people in other games.

Then I played Hexic for a bit which was just me on my own.

Than later me and my girlfriend played 'hide the sausage'.

Yesterday 2 people from my office played squash.

Last week probably quite a few people played skittles of all things.

I guess what Im trying to say, in a longwinded way, is just shut the fuck up about how many people played what. Id be surprised if anyone other than you even gave a fuck. Do you think people at Squenix are sat round saying, oh shit, lots of people play Halo 2? No of course not and they actually made FFXI. Equally, Im sure bungie dont give a rats ass who plays FFXI.

So yeah, enough with the crappy statistics. Games are meant to be fun, not a pissing maths lesson. Bunch of fanny flaps.

  • Arcadiian #82 5 years ago

Since when was being the same as as many other people as possible a good thing ? You think if a few other million people own the same console as you, you "must be right" ?

Christ, how bloody insecure are you ? Shut up and play your games.
  • afghan_jones #83 5 years ago

"Christ, how bloody insecure are you ? Shut up and play your games."

He cant. PS3 doesnt have any.
  • Dixons #84 5 years ago

If the internet is anything to go by, there are a lot of very sad people in the world.
  • lambtron #85 5 years ago

You needed the internet to tell you this? :D
  • Amazing Bryan #86 5 years ago

Haha! My 360 is bigger than your PS3.
  • Dixons #87 5 years ago

Let's just say that throughout my life I've always tried to see the best in people. But web 2.0 has well and truly shattered that illusion. Arguing over sales numbers ugh. Some people need a life a woman and a clue
  • login_name #88 5 years ago

    @afghan_jones

Might wanna take your own advice. Nothing more boring and predicable than a moan about a moan. Don't wanna know, then don't bloody read it and if you don't care, don't spend your precious time responding to it.

I never said Bungie or Square care about the numbers and no, I don't care about the numbers either but if I answer a question and it gets shot down by the ignorant, I like to try back my shit up. Is that ok with you? No? Well boo fuckin hoo mate.
  • miiiguel #89 5 years ago

SeesThroughAll: 1st but not only, apparantly these are bad news for eccletic players because PSP, PS2 and PS3 are thrashing 360 allover the universe and its suburbs.
  • miiiguel #90 5 years ago

penguin_overlord : dude, vgchartz, that is a very, very surreal site..., don't base your stock investments on that one, it's an advice. lol.
  • afghan_jones #91 5 years ago

    @login_name

Oh its on now, bitch, its on!

Actually its not, cause I couldnt care less. Bye.

(PS. In future it would save you some time if you ignored the Halo fanboys as they wont listen to reason and some of them dont even really understand how numbers work so posting stats just infuriates them.)

hugs and kisses from the Jones. xxxx
  • miiiguel #92 5 years ago

hummm... a bit odd to whine about "Halo fanboyz" in a thread with "US Halo 3 breaks 1m pre-orders" for a title :/
  • Ryltar #93 5 years ago

Impressive number of pre-orders. I just hope that your average joe gamer doesn't look past games like Bioshock. Unfortunately, if my friends are anything to go by they probably will, almost all of them told me that they cant afford to buy Bioshock becuase they are getting the helmet version of H3. A great shame that :(
  • miiiguel #94 5 years ago

    Helmet's cool, though...
  • login_name #95 5 years ago

    @afghan_jones

It would save me even more time if I ignored pointless comments like yours, but I just get this itch, ya know?

Oh and seriously man, get up off your knees, I don't expect you to hug and kiss my ass. I appreciate the gesture though ;)
  • Dizzy #96 5 years ago

  • miiiguel #97 5 years ago

    Redefining video-games, indeed!
Halo 3 seems to be the best thing since MS came up with the Achievements idea.
  • captainrentboy #98 5 years ago

''One million pre-orders? Great. Another reason for 360 fanboys to shout that their console is going to beat the PS3 while ignoring the 360 is now being thrashed in every major territory worldwide by the PS2, PS3 and the PSP.''

    Really? Wow!! That's fucking fascinating.
The great thing is, over the next 6 weeks I'll be playing Bioshock and Halo 3, whilst those huuuuge numbers of new PS3 owners sit there twiddling their thumbs, waiting for something worth playing, maybe occasionally they'll look on the internet to see how well their console is selling as of late, and let us all know on here.
Maybe you yourself could give us a fresh update in a couple of weeks, I'll have to take your word for it though, as I'll be a lil too busy, actually playing GAMES on my 360.
Your sales figure quotes are lovely and all, but guess who'll be having the most fun with their console over the next few months.

I wonder will there ever be a Halo-related comments thread that doesn't reach 100 posts and descend into trolling and flamebait? Probably not, while there are a copious amount of bitter and twisted h@70rz out there, determined to try and rain on somebody's parade, for their own entirely unfathomable reasons. Ah well. I'd much rather be sat here in my chair, excited in the manner of a child weeks before Christmas Day, anxiously awaiting the release of a game that I'm sure to get hours upon hours of enjoyment out of, than a sad git sat on internet messageboards, trying to convince everybody that such and such a game is crap, and that people are somehow wrong to like/love it for their own personal reasons...

By bizarre coincidence our favourite strip bar in Budapest was........

    http://www.hallobar.hu/
  • DjFlex52 #101 5 years ago

and these are the same sony suckers that talk about how much the xbots troll the sony news forums......fanboyz are fanboys for all the consoles.....jealous of what they DON'T have and hope to make others feel as miserable as themselves....yep!
  • reddevil93 #102 5 years ago

So who ruined this thread - was it a ps fanboy saying halo is shit etc. or a 360 fanboy taking a shot at anyone who dares play PS3.Both are as bad as each other really but I will put them all on ignore. :)
  • reddevil93 #103 5 years ago

Turns out it was miiiguel with this:

let me impersonate a PS-only gamer:

"oooh, what about the red rings, huh? the red rings, shit!"

Oh well he is on ignore now.
  • FooAtari #104 5 years ago

+1 Miiiguel is now on my ignore list as well. How I hate fanboys... So you prefer a game or system, fair enough. No need to be a dick though and start flaming/trolling.
  • Emth #105 5 years ago

I think it's a stroke of genius citing how many people still play Halo 2, because we all know that if something is popular it's really good.

    /looks at current software charts

    /looks at current film charts

    /looks at current music charts
  • bdc #106 5 years ago

Emth mate, you realize those charts change almost daily, and Halo 2 has pretty much been consistent?
  • TheUnionFrag #107 5 years ago

''One million pre-orders? Great. Another reason for 360 fanboys to shout that their console is going to beat the PS3 while ignoring the 360 is now being thrashed in every major territory worldwide by the PS2, PS3 and the PSP.''

Perhaps you might have a valid argument if the PS3 had any games. 3/4 of a year on and I only see ports and mediocre graphics-fests. Even the 360 had original games by that stage.

Face it - you lose. The Wii has already won.
  • Kryon #108 5 years ago

This is hilarious, Sony fanboys come into a Halo thread to put Halo fans on ignore.
  • miiiguel #109 5 years ago

xiiii! I'm famous, I'm in the "guys-that-hate-halo-but-come-to-every-thread-to-say-it-suck" ignore list. Is this good or bad ? I don't have an ignore list, not really fond of it, but thanks anyway.
  • afghan_jones #110 5 years ago

"So who ruined this thread - was it a ps fanboy saying halo is shit etc. or a 360 fanboy taking a shot at anyone who dares play PS3.Both are as bad as each other really but I will put them all on ignore. :)"

Of course if you do that there will be no one left for you to talk to except the militant Ninty fanboys.

    @kyron

Not a sony fanboy and I was just getting annoyed because some idiots come on a halo thread to criticise the ps brand.
  • Kryon #114 5 years ago

    @Reddevil

To be fair mate, miiiguel didn't really start it, I mean the very first post was a snide remark from JedimasterMalik (one of the most notorious Sony bods of all time) and a few other digs followed before miiiguel retorted...
  • reddevil93 #115 5 years ago

    @kyron

Yeah I suppose.I had acctually taken miiiguel off ignore to see had he said anything adressed at me(yes I realise it does kind of defeat the purpose) but then saw he said I was one of those ps fanboy idiots who criticise halo without having played it even though I never said anything bad about it(I acctually played 1 + 2 and liked them) so then I just put him back on ignore. :)
  • Kryon #116 5 years ago

    Lol, fairplay ;P
  • captainrentboy #117 5 years ago

Bioshock demo's up on live btw!
  • miiiguel #118 5 years ago

I love you all, either way, and it's monday..., a hell of a compliment.
  • miiiguel #119 5 years ago

captainrentboy: yeah..., too bad I have to be doing these ITIL docs which I really dislike.
