Uncharted date, demo chatter

Plus, dev adds 1080i support.

Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells has said that Uncharted: Drake's Fortune will probably be released here in early December, with a demo due out before launch.

Speaking on the comments section of his latest official Sony blog update, Wells wrote: "In regards to the UK release date, I believe its December 7th. We're doing simultaneous localisation in 13 languages...and should be released in all territories within 3 weeks of each other."

In answer to queries about the demo, he said: "Yes, we will be creating a downloadable demo for the PSN. We don't have a final date on when it will be up, but it will be before our release date." By that he presumably means the US release date of 20th November.

Even more heart-lifting was one of Wells' later comments, where he thanked everyone for chipping in to the discussion before explaining that - having read arguments about including 1080i support - the team had gone away and added it on top of the native 720p support. "[I]t was brought to my attention the number of people who had HDTVs but would not be able to experience Uncharted in high-def," he told the audience. "So we immediately went to work and I'm pleased to announce here, for the first time, that we have now implemented 1080 support!" He went on to say that the game runs at 30 frames-per-second.

I know one commenter who'll be looking forward to this :p

    Btw, 720p is already Hi-def...

Both 720p/1080i qualify as "HDReady". 1080p is known as "Full HD".

... and frankly - most of the time - I cannot tell the difference when watching a movie or playing games !

Now I'm slightly less pissed off at Sony. slightly

    Thank god for Naughty Dog.

Now why can't every developer do the same bloody thing? Or they could just lobby Sony to implement a scaler in the PS3 and the problem is then solved without extra development time/cost.

But surely it's easier just to add some firmware or add some hardware to the new revised PS3's? Without starting 'who's better' argument, why is it the 360 has one and the PS3 doesn't? I still can't understand it.

Can't wait for this game. Fighting pirates is always cool, and looks great even despite nicking the cover system from another best seller.

    Gears of Arrrrrrrrrrrr!

    Great news, can't wait!

Good job from Naughty Dog. I'm really looking forward for Uncharted :)

The game looks fantastic but I hope the devs fix the dreadful tearing I've seen in the Behind the Scenes video that was posted on the PS Store last week; it really does spoil the look of the game. It's all very well boasting the game runs at 30 fps but it means nothing if it doesn't do so smoothly. ;)

Design oversight. Probably down to pre-launch over-confidence - all our games will run in 1080p at 120 FPS in 4D! Either that or they were already terrified by how much each PS3 cost and they didn't want to add to that :D

@Morriss - The Xbox 360 doesn't have a hardware scalar as such, the GPU does all the scaling. The ANA/S-ANA chip just converts the image to the different video outputs the 360 uses that's all (S-Video, composite and RGB SCART, component video and VGA) but it's often confusingly mistaken for being the scalar. Eurogamer covered this when they reviewed the Elite 360.

Scaling is no trouble for modern GPUs so it's a mystery why the PS3 doesn't scale its own PS3 games in the same way the 360 does. There again with the 360 scaling everything, you can never be sure whether its games are really 720p or running at the less-than-hi-def resolution of 600/640p! LOL

It's not the only design oversight either: not being able to output stereo and 5.1 simultaneously is criminal, imo.

Anyway, am looking forward to Uncharted. Hopefully, finally, a game will live up to the hype.

Just out of curiosity: why would you want that?

That was Jolly nice of them to do so and indeed listen to gamers as the people mentioned are a minority.

Les: As my living room is a family room. When I'm alone I usually turn on the 5.1 but if my wife is at home or there are others in the house I want the sound to come through the TV. What I don't want is to have to got into the XMB and change settings every bloody time to suit the situation I'm in. Again, with the 360 I just turn on my surround amp and turn the TV down, and if the missus comes home mid-game I switch off the amp and turn up the TV. Easy.

Apparently the PS3 does have hardware scaling but access to it was initially restricted by Sony. Pressure from internal dev teams means that they should be opening this up though. So look for a change in this area for future releases.
  • morriss #18 4 years ago

I heard that statement back in April. :)

"Apparently the PS3 does have hardware scaling but access to it was initially restricted by Sony"

    The question is, why?
  • tangoownage #20 4 years ago

the question is..... who cares ? .....
  • morriss #21 4 years ago

Many people do. I'm one of them.

The question is: What is the meaning of life and how on earth do they get those little ships inside those bottles?
  • numptyboymatt #23 4 years ago

As long as this doesnt end up getting delayed until next year, I will be a happy chappy
  • Darren #24 4 years ago

Wouldn't hardware scaling require more memory? I mean you'd have to have the original and the upscaled version in memory at the same time presumably and as many will know the PS3 has less free memory available to developers than the Xbox 360 does. Maybe the reason for the lack of hardware scaling is due to that and until Sony can get the memory "footprint" down in future firmware updates then we'll just have to live with it? Just a thought...

"7/10, max." - I was initially a bit "meh" about this from watching videos (looks a bit "Indiana Jones and the Gears of Lara";), but apparently the lead designer did the Legacy of Kain games. If you never played Soul Reaver, it was the game that Tomb Raider always should have been (if you forgive the hokey setting an abbreviated ending). So hopefully this should be good stuff.

Although, confusingly, the Crystal Dynamics team that did Soul Reaver have the Tomb Raider license, and Toby Gard himself, onboard these days.
  • Steroyd #26 4 years ago

The memory footprint has been significantly cut down for ages now, some PS3 dev was bitching at people about that.
  • Agent_Llama #27 4 years ago

Watched the video from PSN and still think 'meh' about this one. It looks utterly generic and derivative.
  • cawley1 #28 4 years ago

    This will be fucking ace!
