Uncharted 2 chapter Tweets disabled News

PlayStation 3 News by Tom Bramwell

29 September, 2009

Naughty Dog has disabled chapter-completion updates via Twitter in Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, after reviewers drove all their friends and colleagues mad with constant automated posts.

"Some reviewers have had early access to the game and selected the option to update their Twitter accounts as they completed each chapter of the game," Naughty Dog co-president Evan Wells explained on the US PlayStation blog. "This has resulted in some Twitter feeds being updated multiple times an hour."

While that would not make much of a difference to the @johnnyminkleys of the world, for the rest of us it's a pain in the backside. "We obviously want to provide the best experience for everybody," Wells continued, "so for the time being we've disabled Twitter updates on chapter completions.

"The option will still exist in the menus when the game ships on 10/13, but if activated, it will do nothing. Some time after the game has shipped, we'll release a patch to reactivate the feature, but with a limit on the frequency of updates."

As Alex from Eurogamer Germany points out, however, there are a number of other Twitter options in Uncharted 2, for things like making money in multiplayer and uploading Cinema Mode recordings, and the PlayStation blog post only mentions chapter completion updates.

This seems like a good opportunity to remind you all about Eurogamer's Twitter, updated by yours truly, which didn't include those chapter updates but does sometimes get tired and emotional, make spelling mistakes and answer questions about features and embargoes.

Like the Uncharted 2 review one, which is 7pm BST tonight.

Not sure why a game would ever think that twittering your mates about your single player progress was a good idea. Then again I'm one of the proud and the few, who steered well clear of all that social networking nonsense. I like to maintain my International Man of Mystery status and twittering or facebooking about everything I do doesn't quite fit with that.

I never even knew this existed... what a pointless waste of time. Does anybody actually pay attention to social networking sites or are they just another way for people to make money?

I predict a 10/10, minus a mark for it not having any affiliation with Msoft.

Twitter is the unbridled stream of concience across the internet. Unrestricted and speedy access to people's thoughts and histories. I'd advise people learn how to use it properly rather than dismiss it - it's immensely powerful.

The auto-tweet idea of Uncharted 2 sounded like a bad idea from the start, imagine if more games do that, twitter-feeds would be unbearably annoying.

Yes, twitter can be very powerful, but automated tweets have nothing to do with peoples thoughts. And I personally would never allow a program to access and update my twitter-feed (if I had one), thats not what twitter is for.

Presumably you are joking, or I have missed the point of your comment? Facebook is the second most popular site on the internet after Google.

Even worse, I noticed that one of my " nude girls' sites" had an automatic twitter function to let everyone know what you were watching! I almost panicked when I found that one :P

I'm so excited about Uncharted 2... it's the only game I want this year that can possibly beat my current fave, Batman: Arkham Asylum. And it isn't a first-person shooter either. Hurray! :)

I don't understand what the fuss is about. Loads of iPhone games connect to Twitter to post game updates via OpenFeint, and nobody has kicked off about that yet.

What am I missing here?
